    Notes: Abstract: Primary cultures of cerebral cortical astrocytes were incubated with [U-13C]glutamate (0.5 mM) in modified Dulbecco's medium for 2 h. Perchloric acid (PCA) extracts of the cells as well as redissolved lyophilized media were subjected to NMR spectroscopy to identify 13C-labeled metabolites. NMR spectra of the PCA extracts exhibited distinct multiplets for glutamate, aspartate, glutamine, and malate. The culture medium showed peaks for a multitude of compounds released from the astrocytes, among which lactate, glutamine, alanine, and citrate were readily identifiable. For the first time incorporation of label into lactate from glutamate was clearly demonstrated by doublet formation in the C-3 position and two doublets in the C-2 position of lactate. This labeling pattern can only occur by incorporation from glutamate, because natural abundance will only produce singlets in proton-decoupled 13C spectra. Glutamine, released into the medium, was labeled uniformly to a large extent, but the C-3 position not only showed the expected apparent triplet but also a doublet due to 13C incorporation into the C-4 position of glutamine. The doublet accounted for 11% of the total label in the glutamine synthesized and released within the incubation period. The corresponding labeling pattern of [13C]glutamate in the PCA extracts showed that 19% of the glutamate contained 12C. Labeling of lactate, citrate, malate, and aspartate as well as incorporation of 12C into uniformly labeled glutamate and glutamine could only arise via the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The relative amount of glutamate metabolized via this route is at least 70% as calculated from the areas of the C-3 resonances of these compounds. Only a maximum of 30% was converted to glutamine directly.

    Notes: Summary The blockade of postsynaptic receptors for excitatory amino acids is a promising new field for the possible treatment of cerebral ischaemia. The most important receptor seems to be the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype of the glutamate receptors and MK-801 is a potent non-competitive antagonist to the NMDA receptor. 31P NMR Spectroscopy was used to measure the recovery of intracellular pH and the high energy phosphates Phosphocreatine (PCr) and ATP after ten minutes of temporary global cerebral ischaemia in the rat. Cerebral ischaemia was obtained by combining bilateral carotid ligation and systemic hypotension (2 vessel occlusion model). Two intervention groups with intravenous injection of MK-801 in doses of 0.25mg/kg and 0.5mg/kg 15 minutes before onset of ischaemia were compared to a control group. Both intervention groups showed a more rapid recovery of PCr and ATP than the control group, but there were no significant differences for intracellular pH.

    Notes: Summary Atrial natriuretic peptide -like immunoreactivity (ANP-LI) was measured in plasma from the external jugular vein (EJV) in the postoperative course of 11 patients with aneurysmal Subarachnoid haemorrhage. Samples were taken on day, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 after operation and ANP-LI levels were determined using radioimmunoassay. Ten healthy volunteers were investigated with one EJV plasma sample. Comparing the whole group of SAH patients with the control group, no significant differences in ANP-LI levels were found. In one patient very high ANP-LI levels were found together with high mean plasma sodium levels and high urine sodium excretion. This suggests that there is no general correlation between plasma ANP-LI and SAH; in occasional patients such a correlation may be secondary to changes in plasma sodium levels.

The 2-vessel occlusion model of temporary global cerebral ischaemia in the rat was adopted in this technique. This approach gave reliable results for intracellular pH and valuable information about PCr and ATP with an accurate time resolution for the changes during ischaemia and early reperfusion. The method may be a useful tool to evaluate possible benefits from different kinds of pre- and post ischaemic drug intervention.

    Notes: Abstract. Initial in vivo and in vitro experiments were performed to evaluate the feasibility of stereoscopically displaying three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound data from neurosurgery, laparoscopic surgery, and vascular surgery. Stereoscopic visualization was illustrated by four video sequences, which can be downloaded from http://www.us.unimed.sintef.no/. These sequences show a brain tumor, hepatic arteries in relation to the gallbladder, a model that mimics a neuroendoscope in a cyst, and a ``flight'' into model of an artery with an intima flap. The experiments indicate that stereoscopic display of ultrasound data is feasible when there is sufficient contrast between the objects of interest and the surrounding tissue. True 3D vision improves perception, thus enhancing the ability to understand complex anatomic structures such as irregular lesions and tortuous vessels.
