Notizen: Dendritic calcite forms in an active cold-water tufa system in association with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that discontinuously coat bryophytes and cyanobacteria. Dendrites consist of 100–200 nm thick calcite fibres that form 3D lattice-like domains. In each dendrite domain, fibres have three structurally equal orientations, which correspond in disposition to radii from the centre of a calcite unit cell to the convex triple face junctions on its surface. Fibres do not form in the orientation of the c-axis. The external form of each dendrite has the shape of half of a shortened octahedron, with an upper triangular surface parallel to the substrate. Dendrite nucleation takes place on or in microbial EPS, whether microbial cells are present or not, and is probably effected by attraction of Ca2+ cations to negatively charged EPS, together with CO2-degassing and concomitant pH increase of supersaturated spring water in stream splash zones. Ensuing dendrite growth is abiogenic and controlled by diffusion. Dendrite c-axes are perpendicular to the substrate, probably because the negative charge of EPS forces the orientation of Ca2+ and CO〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00370746:SED741:SED_741_mu1" location="equation/SED_741_mu1.gif"/〉 planes within the developing dendrite crystal to be parallel to the EPS film surface. Dendrites are eventually filled and overgrown by solid, syntaxial calcite, which gradually and completely obliterates the dendrites as more familiar calcite crystal forms develop. No trace of the dendritic nucleus remains in the rock record. Calcite crystal nucleation may take place by this mechanism in many marine and meteoric settings, given that microbial EPS is now assumed to be virtually ubiquitous in these environments. This phenomenon could contribute to the development of familiar fabrics such as marine micrite cement and fibrous calcite cement, radial ooids, peloids, ‘abiogenic’ stromatolites, sea floor precipitates, microbialites, tufa, travertine, speleothems, and some meteoric cements. It may also contribute to the substrate-normal orientation of c-axes of common cement fabrics.

Notizen: Abstract The Galt Helping Network Project was a two-year program to augment mental health and community services in a rural California community through the use of natural or informal resources. The experiment made use of a preventive intervention model which identified important needs of local youth and families, board and care residents, the entire community for recreation and for mental health services, and the Mexican American Community for recognition and participation. It brought a number of volunteers into the provision of direct services and created a number of institutional forms by which continued services and enlarged voluntary participation in community affairs are continuing beyond the official end of the project. This article concludes that the Galt Helping Network Model can provide a major contribution to mental health maintenance and community involvement through the recognition of natural helpers and the involvement of the community in an active form of problem solving. Through these methods a community with limited fiscal resources can take a major step toward providing a caring and helping environment for its members.

Notizen: Using the solvatochromic indicator method, a scale of solvent hydrogen-bond basicity, β1 (General), has been set up using a series of double regression equations, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \nu = \nu _0 + s\pi _1^* + b\beta _1 $$\end{document} for 11 aniline-type indicators. A similar solvent scale, β1 (Special), has been constructed by the homomorphic comparison method using only results by Laurence et al. on the indicators 4-nitroaniline and 4-nitro-N,N-dimethylaniline. Results are available from our previous work on a general solute scale, β2H, and we have also obtained a special solute scale, β2 (pKHB) from available log K values for hydrogen-bond complexation of bases with 4-fluorophenol in CCl4. However, the two solute β2 scales are virtually identical. It is shown that there is a general connection between β1(General) and β2H, with r = 0·9775 and s.d. = 0·05 for 32 compounds, and between β1(Special) and β2H, with r = 0·9776 and s.d. = 0·06 for the same 32 compounds. The latter correlation over 60 compounds yields r = 0·9684 and s.d. = 0·07. However, there are so many compounds in these regressions for which the differences in the solvent and solute β values are larger than the total expected error of 0·07 units that the use of β1 to predict β2 or vice versa is a very hazardous procedure. About 70 new β1 values obtained by the double regression method are also reported.

Beschreibung: Ocean and coastal acidification (OCA) present a unique set of sustainability challenges at the human-ecological interface. Extensive biogeochemical monitoring that can assess local acidification conditions, distinguish multiple drivers of changing carbonate chemistry, and ultimately inform local and regional response strategies is necessary for successful adaptation to OCA. However, the sampling frequency and cost-prohibitive scientific equipment needed to monitor OCA are barriers to implementing the widespread monitoring of dynamic coastal conditions. Here, we demonstrate through a case study that existing community-based water monitoring initiatives can help address these challenges and contribute to OCA science. We document how iterative, sequential outreach, workshop-based training, and coordinated monitoring activities through the Northeast Coastal Acidification Network (a) assessed the capacity of northeastern United States community science programs and (b) engaged community science programs productively with OCA monitoring efforts. Our results (along with the companion manuscript) indicate that community science programs are capable of collecting robust scientific information pertinent to OCA and are positioned to monitor in locations that would critically expand the coverage of current OCA research. Furthermore, engaging community stakeholders in OCA science and outreach enabled a platform for dialogue about OCA among other interrelated environmental concerns and fostered a series of co-benefits relating to public participation in resource and risk management. Activities in support of community science monitoring have an impact not only by increasing local understanding of OCA but also by promoting public education and community participation in potential adaptation measures.

Beschreibung: Field mapping of carbonate-hosted base metal showings in the Milne Inlet graben of the Mesoproterozoic Borden basin, Nunavut, has identified the main geologic settings for mineralization in the district that hosts the past-producing Nanisivik deposit. All known showings are associated with faults, fractures, or dikes; these include major, graben-bounding structures with significant displacement, extensive synsedimentary and reactivated intragraben structures, and comparatively minor structures with negligible displacement. These brittle structural features, together with stratigraphic factors and primary lithofacies, control the distribution of base metal showings, and define four main settings for sulfide concentrations. The most volumetrically impressive mineralization (1) for example, Nanisivik orebody, is spatially constrained by erosional highs on an unconformity surface that separates host dolostone and overlying shale; (2) and (3) widespread but volumetrically limited fault- and fracture-controlled showings are spatially associated with intragraben fracture and dike systems--some of these showings (2) are stratigraphically limited to dolostone immediately above shale, whereas others (3) appear to be stratigraphically random and show a close spatial association with structural features; and (4) lithofacies-controlled mineralization that displays replacement textures is present in the immediate vicinity of graben-bounding faults. The most distinctive features of the district are the predominance of structural controls on the spatial distribution of sulfides, the nonplatformal, nonpassive-margin origin of the main dolostone host, the fundamental spatial control imposed by unconformity shape at the most important showings, and association of some highly prospective showings with long-lived crustal-scale faults.

Beschreibung: We report the results of an observational program to investigate the gamma-ray and optical variability properties of the vRL NLSY1 galaxies listed in the Yuan et al. sample. We have identified 17 members of the Yuan et al. sample possibly associated with gamma-ray sources based on a combination of their optical polarization and optical variability and their gamma-ray properties. Eight have previously been associated with gamma-ray sources. We find nine additional members that we predict are excellent candidates to be associated with gamma-ray sources in the future. All 17 sources have many properties in common with flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), suggesting that they may, in fact, constitute a new subclass of FSRQs.
