    Notes: Size, density, and morphology of particulates in helium-diluted silane rf plasmas are studied using a scanning electron microscopic method. The experimental results show that particulates grow through three phases of nucleation, rapid growth, and growth saturation. Particulates in two different size ranges coexist after the initiation of the rapid growth phase, the size distribution of particulates in each size group is found to be well expressed by both the lognormal and normal distributions with a narrow size dispersion, and coagulation of particulates plays a crucial role in the rapid growth phase. The dependencies of size and density of particulates in the large-size group on rf-power-on period are very similar to their temporal evolutions obtained by an in situ laser light scattering method. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.

    Description: Although no deterministic and reliable earthquake precursor is known to date, we are steadily gaining insight into probabilistic forecasting that draws on space–time characteristics of earthquake clustering. Clustering-based models aiming to forecast earthquakes within the next 24 hours are under test in the global project ‘Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability’ (CSEP). The 2011 March 11 magnitude 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake in Japan provides a unique opportunity to test the existing 1-day CSEP models against its unprecedentedly active aftershock sequence. The original CSEP experiment performs tests after the catalogue is finalized to avoid bias due to poor data quality. However, this study differs from this tradition and uses the preliminary catalogue revised and updated by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which is often incomplete but is immediately available. This study is intended as a first step towards operability-oriented earthquake forecasting in Japan. Encouragingly, at least one model passed the test in most combinations of the target day and the testing method, although the models could not take account of the megaquake in advance and the catalogue used for forecast generation was incomplete. However, it can also be seen that all models have only limited forecasting power for the period immediately after the quake. Our conclusion does not change when the preliminary JMAcatalogue is replaced by the finalized one, implying that the models perform stably over the catalogue replacement and are applicable to operational earthquake forecasting. However, we emphasize the need of further research on model improvement to assure the reliability of forecasts for the days immediately after the main quake. Seismicity is expected to remain high in all parts of Japan over the coming years. Our results present a way to answer the urgent need to promote research on time-dependent earthquake predictability to prepare for subsequent large earthquakes in the near future in Japan.

    Description: Seismicity in southern Kanto activated with the 2011 March 11 Tohoku earthquake of magnitude M 9.0, but does this cause a significant difference in the probability of more earthquakes at the present or in the To? future answer this question, we examine the effect of a change in the seismicity rate on the probability of earthquakes. Our data set is from the Japan Meteorological Agency earthquake catalogue, downloaded on 2012 May 30. Our approach is based on time-dependent earthquake probabilistic calculations, often used for aftershock hazard assessment, and are based on two statistical laws: the Gutenberg–Richter (GR) frequency–magnitude law and the Omori–Utsu (OU) aftershock-decay law. We first confirm that the seismicity following a quake of M 4 or larger is well modelled by the GR law with b  ~ 1. Then, there is good agreement with the OU law with p  ~ 0.5, which indicates that the slow decay was notably significant. Based on these results, we then calculate the most probable estimates of future M 6–7-class events for various periods, all with a starting date of 2012 May 30. The estimates are higher than pre-quake levels if we consider a period of 3-yr duration or shorter. However, for statistics-based forecasting such as this, errors that arise from parameter estimation must be considered. Taking into account the contribution of these errors to the probability calculations, we conclude that any increase in the probability of earthquakes is insignificant. Although we try to avoid overstating the change in probability, our observations combined with results from previous studies support the likelihood that afterslip (fault creep) in southern Kanto will slowly relax a stress step caused by the Tohoku earthquake. This afterslip in turn reminds us of the potential for stress redistribution to the surrounding regions. We note the importance of varying hazards not only in time but also in space to improve the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for southern Kanto.

    Description: The present study was designed to assess both preventive and therapeutic effects of (S)-1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-N-[4-(methylsulfonyl) phenyl]-5-[2-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl]-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxamide (CS-3150), a novel nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, on renal injury in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)/salt-induced hypertensive rats (DOCA rats). From 7 weeks of age, DOCA was subcutaneously administered once a week for 4 weeks to uninephrectomized rats fed a high-salt diet. In experiment 1, CS-3150 (0.3–3 mg/kg) was orally administered once a day for 4 weeks coincident with DOCA administration. In experiment 2, after establishment of renal injury by 4 weeks of DOCA/salt loading, CS-3150 (3 mg/kg) was orally administered once a day for 4 weeks with or without continuous DOCA administration. In experiment 1, DOCA/salt loading significantly increased systolic blood pressure (SBP), which was prevented by CS-3150 in a dose-dependent manner. Development of renal injury (proteinuria, renal hypertrophy, and histopathological changes in glomeruli and tubule) was also suppressed by CS-3150 with inhibition of mRNA expression of fibrosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress markers. In experiment 2, under continuous DOCA treatment, CS-3150 clearly ameliorated existing renal injury without lowering SBP, indicating that CS-3150 regressed renal injury independent of its antihypertensive action. Moreover, CS-3150 treatment in combination with withdrawal of DOCA showed further therapeutic effect on renal injury accompanied by reduction in SBP. These results demonstrate that CS-3150 not only prevents but also ameliorates hypertension and renal injury in DOCA rats. Therefore, CS-3150 could be a promising agent for the treatment of hypertension and renal disorders, and may have potential to promote regression of renal injury.

    Description: We have developed a real-time moment tensor monitoring system (RMT) which takes advantage of a grid-based moment tensor inversion technique and real-time broad-band seismic recordings to automatically monitor earthquake activities in the vicinity of Taiwan. The centroid moment tensor (CMT) inversion technique and a grid search scheme are applied to obtain the information of earthquake source parameters, including the event origin time, hypocentral location, moment magnitude and focal mechanism. All of these source parameters can be determined simultaneously within 117 s after the occurrence of an earthquake. The monitoring area involves the entire Taiwan Island and the offshore region, which covers the area of 119.3°E to 123.0°E and 21.0°N to 26.0°N, with a depth from 6 to 136 km. A 3-D grid system is implemented in the monitoring area with a uniform horizontal interval of 0.1° and a vertical interval of 10 km. The inversion procedure is based on a 1-D Green's function database calculated by the frequency–wavenumber ( fk ) method. We compare our results with the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) catalogue data for earthquakes occurred between 2010 and 2012. The average differences between event origin time and hypocentral location are less than 2 s and 10 km, respectively. The focal mechanisms determined by RMT are also comparable with the Broadband Array in Taiwan for Seismology (BATS) CMT solutions. These results indicate that the RMT system is realizable and efficient to monitor local seismic activities. In addition, the time needed to obtain all the point source parameters is reduced substantially compared to routine earthquake reports. By connecting RMT with a real-time online earthquake simulation (ROS) system, all the source parameters will be forwarded to the ROS to make the real-time earthquake simulation feasible. The RMT has operated offline (2010–2011) and online (since January 2012 to present) at the Institute of Earth Sciences (IES), Academia Sinica ( http://rmt.earth.sinica.edu.tw ). The long-term goal of this system is to provide real-time source information for rapid seismic hazard assessment during large earthquakes.

    Description: We determined focal mechanism solutions for 14,544 earthquakes that occurred in and around the Japanese Islands from July 1985 to December 1998 using first-motion polarities reported by the Japan University Seismic Network and compiled by the Japan University Seismic Network Earthquake Catalog of First-Motion Focal Mechanisms (JUNEC FM 2). This catalog covers small-magnitude earthquakes ( M ≥2.0) prior to the recent development of seismic observation networks and automated waveform data processing systems. This catalog will prove helpful in understanding the spatial and temporal heterogeneities of stress fields by combining recent focal mechanism solutions and also will be useful for statistical analyses.     Description: The rapid detection and characterization of megathrust earthquakes is a difficult task given their large rupture zone and duration. These events produce very strong ground vibrations in the near field that can cause weak motion instruments to clip, and they are also capable of generating large-scale tsunamis. The 2011 M  9 Tohoku-oki earthquake that occurred offshore Japan is one member of a series of great earthquakes for which extended geophysical observations are available. Here, we test an automated scanning algorithm for great earthquakes using continuous very long-period (100–200 s) seismic records from K-NET strong-motion seismograms of the earthquake. By continuously performing the cross-correlation of data and Green's functions (GFs) in a moment tensor analysis, we show that the algorithm automatically detects, locates and determines source parameters including the moment magnitude and mechanism of the great Tohoku-oki earthquake within 8 min of its origin time. The method does not saturate. We also show that quasi-finite-source GFs, which take into account the effects of a finite-source, in a single-point source moment tensor algorithm better fit the data, especially in the near-field. We show that this technique allows the correct characterization of the earthquake using a limited number of stations. This can yield information usable for tsunami early warning.

    Description: Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) have revealed that a mega-thrust earthquake that occurs in an island-arc trench system causes post-seismic crustal deformation. Such crustal deformation data have been interpreted by combining three mechanisms: afterslip, poroelastic rebound and viscoelastic relaxation. It is seismologically important to determine the contribution of each mechanism because it provides frictional properties between the plate boundaries and viscosity estimates in the asthenosphere which are necessary to evaluate the stress behaviour during earthquake cycles. However, the observation sites of GNSS are mostly deployed over land and can detect only a small part of the large-scale deformation, which precludes a clear separation of the mechanisms. To extend the spatial coverage of the deformation area, recent studies started to use satellite gravity data that can detect long-wavelength deformations over the ocean. To date, compared with theoretical models for calculating the post-seismic crustal deformation, a few models have been proposed to interpret the corresponding gravity variations. Previous approaches have adopted approximations for the effects of compressibility, sphericity and self-gravitation when computing gravity changes. In this study, a new spectral-finite element approach is presented to consider the effects of material compressibility for Burgers viscoelastic earth model with a laterally heterogeneous viscosity distribution. After the basic principles are explained, it is applied to the 2004 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake. For this event, post-seismic deformation mechanisms are still a controversial topic. Using the developed approach, it is shown that the spatial patterns of gravity change generated by the above three mechanisms clearly differ from one another. A comparison of the theoretical simulation results with the satellite gravity data obtained from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment reveals that both afterslip and viscoelastic relaxation are occurring. Considering the spatial patterns in satellite gravity fields is an effective method for investigating post-seismic deformation mechanisms.

    Description: We studied the seismicity rate increase in the Kanto region around Tokyo following the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake ( M w 9.0) to examine whether this increase was correlated with the static increases in the Coulomb failure function (CFF) of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake sequence. Because earthquakes in the Kanto region exhibit various focal mechanisms, the receiver faults for the CFF were assumed to be the focal mechanism solutions for nearly 19 000 earthquakes that previously occurred. Our results showed that the number of earthquakes for which the mechanism solutions had a positive CFF (~12 000) is much larger than those that had a negative CFF (~2000). Comparison of the CFF values for earthquakes before and after the Tohoku-Oki earthquake showed that the latter had more positive values; this supports the hypothesis that the coseismic stress change transferred from the Tohoku-Oki earthquake sequence is the major contributing factor to the increased seismicity rate in the Kanto region.
