Description: Numerous specimens of coccolithophore combination coccospheres in water samples collected from the North Aegean and Tyrrhenian (Mediterranean Sea) have been photographed using the scanning electron microscope. As a consequence a series of taxonomic revisions are proposed, in which the names of the heterococcolithophores and holococcolithophores involved in the same life-cycle are synonymized. This has resulted in synonymizing the genus Coronosphaera with Syracosphaera and establishing one new combination; Syracosphaera arethusae (Kamptner 1941) comb. nov.

Description: The famous Greek geographer Strabo wrote in the first century A.D., that Piraeus was formerly an island and lay over against' the mainland, from which it got its name. To validate Strabo's hypothesis, cartographic and historical data were compiled with multiproxy paleoenvironmental analyses and radiocarbon dating from a series of boreholes drilled in the Cephissus coastal plain, southwest of Athens, Greece. The results of this interdisciplinary geoarchaeological research demonstrate the reliability of Strabo's text by revealing that Piraeus was indeed an island. In early Holocene time, the rocky hill of Piraeus was linked to the mainland of Attica. During the late to final Neolithic Period (4850-3450 B.C.), Piraeus became an island in a shallow marine bay, due to sea-level rise in the Holocene. Between 2850 and 1550 B.C., in the Early and Middle Bronze Age, Piraeus was separated from the mainland by a wide lagoon. In the fifth century B.C., Themistocles, Cimon, and then Pericles connected Athens to Piraeus by building two "long walls" partly built on a residual coastal marsh called the Halipedon. This study reveals an impressive example of past landscape evolution.

Description: Organic geochemical (alkenones) and micropaleontological (nannofossil) data from the Pissouri South section (PPS) in the island of Cyprus provided a detailed description of the paleoclimatic (sea surface temperature- SST) and paleoenvironmental conditions during the "warm Pliocene" (c. 4.1-3.25Ma) in the EasternMediterranean. We found that the suite of sapropel events recorded in the studied interval took place under conditions of increased SST, enhanced water column stratification and development of a productive deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), as witnessed by the dominance of Florisphaera profunda species. Such conditions are similar to those prevailing during Quaternary sapropel formation, triggered by freshwater discharges from the N. African margin due to insolation-driven intensification of the African monsoon. The absence of F. profunda in Pliocene sapropels fromcentralMediterranean records highlights the sensitive response of the eastern basin to freshwater perturbations. Comparisons between alkenone and calcareous nannofossil assemblage patterns infer Pseudoemiliania lacunosa as the main alkenone producer in sapropel layers; yet Reticulofenestra spp. contribution cannot be ruled out. The first Pliocene alkenone-SST record in the E. Mediterranean presented here documents the "warm Pliocene" period (~4.1-3.25 Ma) characterized by mean SST of c. 26 °C. Distinct SST minima at ~3.9 Ma, 3.58 Ma and between 3.34 and 3.31 Ma, correspond to the MIS Gi16, MIS MG12 and MIS M2 global cooling episodes, before the onset of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation. Our findings imply that the peak of the MIS M2 cooling in the Eastern Mediterranean may be up to ~40 kyrs older than the age attributed before to benthic stable oxygen isotopes records of this event.

Description: This study presents the species composition of living coccolithophore communities in the NE Aegean Sea. 72 water samples from 4 different sampling stations were investigated. Stations were located along a north-south transect in the area receiving the inflowing surface Black Sea Water (BSW) over the deeper Levantine Water (LW) layer. 6 different sample depths were sampled. Coccolithophores in the area were diverse and a total of 95 species over 3 sampling periods were recognized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques.

Description: Coccolithophores are globally important marine calcifying phytoplankton. They contribute to the organic carbon pump through the primary production and the ballast of organic matter, and to the carbonate pump through the production of calcium carbonate. Here we compiled all available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coccolithophore abundance observations. Taxa were standardized following NannoTax3 to a species level where possible. Subspecies (e.a. C. leptoporus subsp. leptoporus and C. leptoporus subsp. quadriperforatus) were grouped as single species. The database contains 2556 abundance observations from 35 different publications. The data span the period of 1993-2017, with observations from all ocean basins and all seasons, and at depths ranging from the surface to 5000 m. We limited our compilation to SEM observations (or observations which further identified samples with SEM) because SEM provides greater detail of coccolithophore diversity than more commonly used polarized light microscopy. Although this limits the number of observations, this allows for a more in-depth analysis of coccolithophore ecology, such as the ecological significance of the coccolithophore life cycle.
