Notes: Abstract: The effects of GABA on protein kinase C (PKC) were investigated in rat hippocampal slices at various postnatal ages [postnatal day (P) 1-P60]. At P4, GABA (300 µM) induced a rapid (in 1–2 min) 40–50% increase of PKC activity in the membrane fraction and a decrease in the cytosol. These effects were mediated by GABAB receptors because (a) they were neither blocked by 10 µM bicuculline nor reproduced by 10 µM isoguvacine and (b) they were mimicked by the GABAB agonist baclofen (3–30 µM), an effect fully antagonized by the GABAB antagonist 2-hydroxysaclofen (10 µM). A baclofen-induced increased PKC activity in the membrane fraction was only present during the early postnatal period (P1–P14); it was associated with a translocation from the cytosol to the membrane of the immunoreactivity of some PKC isoforms (α-, β-, and ε-PKCs). In contrast, after P21, PKC activity and α-, β-, ε-, and γ-PKC immunoreactivities were decreased by baclofen in the membrane fraction and increased in the cytosol. These results suggest that the stimulation of GABAB receptors differentially modulates PKC activity via distinct second messenger pathways in developing and mature hippocampi.

Notes: Abstract The composition of an artificial medium and technical procedures used for in vitro rearing of the endophagous larval parasitoid Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), from post-germ band egg to the 2nd instar larva, are described. Amino acids, carbohydrates, salts, and vitamins were supplied in defined amounts as an aqueous solution which, when supplemented with 20 mg/ml of bovine albumin, 5 mg/ml of lactalbumin (enzymatic hydrolysate), 20% (v/v) fetal bovine serum, 20% (v/v) milk and 10% (v/v) chicken egg yolk, allowed for parasitoid growth and molting to the 2nd instar. Molting to the final instar was never observed.

Notes: Abstract Field responses of Gortyna xanthenes (Germar) males to traps baited with different mixtures of the female sex pheromone components were evaluated in an artichoke field. Catches were compared to those obtained by virgin females and light traps. The best results were achieved by utilizing a mixture of 5 mg Z11-16:Ald + 0.15 mg Z9-16:Ald + 0.15 mg 16:Ald + 0.12 mg Z11-16:OH, which captured only G. xanthenes males 3–5 times more than light traps and ca two times more than one virgin female. Starting from the basic mixture Z11-16:Ald (89–92%) + Z9-16:Ald (2–4%), the addition of 16:Ald (2–4%) and of Z11-16:OH (2–3%) produced an increase of G. xanthenes and a decrease of H, armigera (Hb.) catches. The inhibitory action of Z11-16:OH towards H. armigera males was confirmed.

Notes: Abstract  Laminins may play important roles in gastric gland development due to the differential localization of their α chains in human fetal fundic (oxyntic) mucosa. To extend this hypothesis, the current investigation was undertaken to compare the anatomical and cellular distribution of epithelial integrin subunits with those of laminin α chains in the human stomach at different ages (8–22 weeks of gestation) using indirect immunofluorescence. In the body, fundus and antrum regions, the β1 and α6 subunits were associated with the entire epithelium at all developmental stages in the same way as laminin chains (α1/α5) detected with 4C7 monoclonal antibody. By contrast, the α3 and β4 subunits of α3β1 and α6β4 integrins together with the laminin α3-chain were concentrated in the surface and foveolus compartments composed of differentiating mucous cells. Most importantly, the α2 integrin subunit was expressed in a rather complex pattern: (1) it was located at the base and at cell-cell boundaries of surface/foveolar epithelium, (2) was specifically repressed in differentiating parietal cells, and (3) its expression increased in maturing glands, where it became concentrated at the basal pole of epithelial cells simultaneously exhibiting a strong reactivity for laminin-2 (α2-chain). Taken altogether, our observations provide new evidence for the implication of different laminins and their receptors in the development of all human gastric epithelial lineages, surface mucous cells or glandular cells. The coordinated expression of α2 and α3 integrin subunits as well as the cellular re-distribution of α2β1 integrin likely represent key events for the differentiation of glandular secretory cell types, especially maturing chief cells responsible for the synthesis/secretion of gastric digestive enzymes in fundic-type glands.

Notes: Summary Abstinence signs were precipitated in rats by naloxone (1 mg·kg-1 s.c.) injected at various times (from 1.5 to 16 h) after a single dose of morphine hydrochloride (15 or 50 mg·kg-1 s.c.) administered incaqueous solution. Increasing the dose of morphine increased the latency of the phenomena and the duration of the underlying state “shifts” of signs as described by Bläsig et al. (1974) in chronically morphinized rats also occurred when increasing the dose of morphine and the time interval between the injections of morphine and of naloxone. Naltrexone and diprenorphine were also effective. These three antagonists, given before morphine, were able to prevent precipitated abstinence: however, naloxone was almost ineffective when the higher dose of morphine was used and when the time interval was long. In these latter conditions, naltrexone was definitely more effective and longer acting and diprenorphine still more so. The same characteristics were found for the protective action of the three antagonists in acutely morphinized mice and the same order for their potencies in precipitating abstinence in acutely morphinized mice. Like naloxone, naltrexone and diprenorphine facilitated a nociceptive reaction in normal mice. The abstinence signs precipitated in acutely morphinized rats or mice are probably not unmasked excitatory effects of morphine as such effects should have been increased rather than inhibited by previous administration of specific antagonists; they might correspond to potentiated effects of the antagonists themselves. The prevention by specific antagonists of the abstinence syndrome is most simply interpreted by antagonism (direct or indirect) of dependence induction, but other interpretations are not excluded.

Notes: Abstract The chromosome complement of Gueriniella serratulae (F.) Fernald, Tribe Iceryini, Subfamily Monophlebinae of the primitive coccid Family Margarodidae, is 2 n ♀=6; males are unknown. Reproduction is by thelytokous parthenogenesis. Meiosis is normal; polar bodies do not contribute to the formation of a zygote-substitute nucleus; and development is initiated by a haploid cleavage of the female pronucleus. Diploidy is restored by the fusion of the 2 nuclei resulting from this division. With the exception of Gueriniella, all cytologically known Iceryini are haplo-diploids, with a chromosome complement of n=2. The hypothesis is proposed that Gueriniella is a persistent primitive stemming from the ancestral iceryine stock prior to the loss of the sex chromosomes and the evolution of haplo-diploidy within the tribe. A review of the available evidence from cytology, taxonomy, endosymbiosis, behavior and distribution shows good agreement with this interpretation.

Notes: Abstract In-flight orientation of the braconid Aphidius ervi in response to volatiles released from broad bean plants infested by the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, was studied in a no-choice wind-tunnel bioassay. The role of aphid infestation level and duration, systemic production of volatiles by “insect-free” parts of the plant, and the specificity of aphid-induced volatiles on the flight behavior of the foraging female parasitoids were investigated. The upper insect-free part of a three-leaved broad bean plant, which was basally infested by a population of 40 A. pisum, released synomones detectable by A. ervi females after at least 48–72 hr of infestation, resulting in both significant increases in oriented flights and landings on the source compared with uninfested control plants. This suggests that volatiles involved in host-location by A. ervi are systemically released by broad bean plants either in response to circulation of aphid saliva, circulation of saliva-induced bioactive elicitors, or circulation of the synomones themselves. Air entrainment extracts of volatiles collected from a broad bean plant infested by the nonhost Aphis fabae or an uninfested broad bean plant elicited few oriented flights and landing responses by female parasitoids. These extracts were significantly less attractive than extracts collected from a broad bean plant infested by the host A. pisum, indicating the specificity of synomones elicited by different aphid species on the same plant species.
