    Notes: The regulation of surface water pCO2 was studied in a set of 33 unproductive boreal lakes of different humic content, situated along a latitudinal gradient (57°N to 64°N) in Sweden. The lakes were sampled four times during one year, and analyzed on a wide variety of water chemistry parameters. With only one exception, all lakes were supersaturated with CO2 with respect to the atmosphere at all sampling occasions. pCO2 was closely related to the DOC concentration in lakes, which in turn was mainly regulated by catchment characteristics. This pattern was similar along the latitudinal gradient and at different seasons of the year, indicating that it is valid for a variety of climatic conditions within the boreal forest zone. We suggest that landscape characteristics determine the accumulation and subsequent supply of allochthonous organic matter from boreal catchments to lakes, which in turn results in boreal lakes becoming net sources of atmospheric CO2.

    Notes: We calculated the carbon loss (mineralization plus sedimentation) and net CO2 escape to the atmosphere for 79 536 lakes and total running water in 21 major Scandinavian catchments (size range 437–48 263 km2). Between 30% and 80% of the total organic carbon that entered the freshwater ecosystems was lost in lakes. Mineralization in lakes and subsequent CO2 emission to the atmosphere was by far the most important carbon loss process. The withdrawal capacity of lakes on the catchment scale was closely correlated to the mean residence time of surface water in the catchment, and to some extent to the annual mean temperature represented by latitude. This result implies that variation of the hydrology can be a more important determinant of CO2 emission from lakes than temperature fluctuations. Mineralization of terrestrially derived organic carbon in lakes is an important regulator of organic carbon export to the sea and may affect the net exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and the boreal landscape.

    Notes: The impact of salinity on the composition and functional performance (biomass production, growth efficiency and growth rates) of bacterial communities was investigated using batch cultures growing on dissolved organic carbon from a river draining into the Northern Baltic Sea. The cultures were adjusted to riverine or estuarine salinity levels and inoculated with bacteria from these two environments. Bacterial growth efficiencies differed in response to salinity and the origin of the inoculum. When salinity was adjusted to correspond to the salinity at the site where the inoculum was retrieved, growth efficiency was relatively high (11.5±2.6%). However, when bacteria were confronted with a shift in salinity, growth efficiency was lower (7.5±2.0%) and more of the utilized carbon was respired. In contrast, growth rates were higher when bacteria were exposed to a change in salinity. The composition of the bacterial communities developing in the batch cultures differed, as shown by 16S rDNA DGGE, depending on the origin of the inoculum and salinity. Reverse and direct DNA–DNA hybridization revealed salinity optima in the growth of specific bacterial strains as well as broader phylogenetic groups. Strains belonging to the α- and β-Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and γ-Proteobacteria other than the genus Pseudomonas showed higher relative abundance under freshwater conditions, whereas strains of the genus Pseudomonas and the Cytophaga–Flavobacterium–Bacteroides group were favored by estuarine conditions. Generally, our results demonstrate functional changes associated with changes in community composition. We suggest that even moderate changes in salinity affect bacterial community composition, which subsequently leads to altered growth characteristics.

    Notes: Abstract Microbial transformation of labile, low molecular weight dissolved organic matter (DOM) into dissolved humic matter (DHM) was studied in seawater. Surface water samples were amended with [14C into 14CO2, TO14C (total organic 14C), and PO14C (particulate organic 14C), was measured over time in confined samples. The humic and non-humic fractions of DO14C (dissolved organic 14C) were separated according to a common operational definition of DHM based on adsorption on XAD-8 macroporous resin. Both TO14C and non-humic DO14C decreased during the experiments. However, 14C-labelled DHM increased during the first week of the incubations, to a level where it comprised 15% of the TO14C remaining in the samples, or 3% of the initially added 14C. Towards the end of experiments (ca 70 days), the humic fraction of DO14C gradually approached the background level of poisoned control samples. Provided that the XAD-8 operational definition of DHM is accepted, this study indicates that humic matter may be formed in seawater within days from labile monomers such as glucose.

    Notes: Bacterial utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters is closely linked to photochemical transformations of DOM. Photochemically produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a central role in many photochemical reactions, but the role of ROS for the photochemical facilitation of bacterial utilization of DOM is previously not known. We exposed lake water with high DOM concentrations to simulated sunlight, with and without the addition of ROS scavengers, and quantified the effect on the production of CO2, the loss of DOM absorbance, and bacterial growth. The photodegradation of DOM through microbial–photochemical interactions was dependent on the action of ROS. The use of ROS scavengers in irradiations of the lake water revealed that photobleaching below 300 nm and the production of CO2 are highly dependent on the action of ROS. Photobleaching and CO2 production in irradiated waters decreased significantly with the addition of ROS scavengers, but post-irradiation bacterial growth in the samples containing an ROS scavenger increased significantly above those without. The decrease in ROS activity (CO2 production) likely caused an accumulation of bioavailable DOM and enhanced microbial processes. Rapid degradation of DOM through the action of ROS would be especially important in high DOM systems. The high photochemical ROS activity may counterbalance the positive effects on bacterial activity of DOM photolysis into bioavailable molecules.

    Notes: Abstract Zooplankton grazing impact on algae, heterotrophic flagellates and bacteria, as well as invertebrate predation on herbivorous zooplankton, were investigated in two sub-Antarctic lakes with extremely simple food chains. The two species of herbivorous zooplankton present in the lakes (the copepods boeckella michaelseni and Pseudoboeckella poppei) exerted substantial grazing pressure on algae. However, the dominant algal species exhibited properties that enabled them to avoid (large size or extruding spines, e.g. Staurastrum sp., Tribonema sp.) or compensate (recruitment from the sediment, Mallomonas sp.) grazing. There are only two potential invertebrate predators on the herbivorous copepods in the two lakes: the copepod Parabroteas sarsi and the diving beetle Lancetes claussi. Vertebrate predators are entirely abscent from sub-Antarctic lakes. Based on our experiments, we estimated that the predators would remove at most about 0.4% of the herbivorous copepods per day, whereas planktivorous fish, if present in the lakes, would have removed 5–17% of the zooplankton each day. Consequently, the invertebrate predators in these high-latitude lakes had only a marginal predation impact compared to the predation pressure on zooplankton in the presence of vertebrate predators in temperate lakes. The study of these simple systems with only two quantitatively functionally important trophic links, suggests that high grazing pressure foreces the algal community towards forms with grazer resistant adaptations such as large size, recruitment from another habitat, and grazer avoidance spines. We propose that due to such adaptations, predictions from food web theory are only partly corroborated, i.e. algal biomass actually increases with increasing productivity, although the grazer community is released from predation. In more species-rich and complex systems, e.g temperate lakes with three functionally important links, such adaptations are likely to be even more important, and, consequently, the observable effects of trophic interactions from top predators on lower trophic levels even more obscured.

    Notes: Summary Bacterivory was detected by incorporation of 0.57 μm diameter, fluorescent polystyrene beads and fluorescently labeled bacteria (FLB) in two cultured species of Cryptomonas (C. ovata and C. erosa), and a population of Cryptomonas sp in a humic, mesotrophic lake. Rates of ingestion and clearance were very low, and similar for the cultures and the in situ population. The in situ population incorporated 0.7–1.7 bacteria cell-1 h-1, thereby ingesting 0.3%–2.0% of the total bacterial numbers present in the water per day, and receiving less than 2% of its carbon content per day through bacterivory. Thus, bacterivory by Cryptomonas was quantitatively important neither as a sink for bacterial biomass, nor as a carbon source for the algal cells. Possibly, it served in the uptake of essential nutrients.
