    Description / Table of Contents: Die Konfiguration von Polyvinylchlorid wurde mit Hilfe von Kernresonanzspektren hoher Auflösung untersucht. Die Spektren der Wasserstoffatome in α-Stellung bestehen aus drei Quintetts, die der isotaktischen, heterotaktischen und syndiotaktischen Konfiguration zugeordnet wurden. Die Untersuchung mehrerer Proben von Polyvinylchlorid zeigte, daß das Polymerisationsmedium und die Polymerisationstemperatur die Stereoregularität nur wenig beeinflussen.Die sich widersprechenden Veröffentlichungen über das Spektrum der Wasserstoffatome in β-Stellung werden diskutiert. Mit Hilfe eines 100-MHz-Spektrums von α-deuteriertem Polyvinylchlorid konnte gezeigt werden, daß das Spektrum der β-Wasserstoffatome aus zwei sich überlagernden Tripletts besteht, die auf Wasserstoffatome in isotaktischen und syndiotaktischen Diaden zurückzuführen sind.Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß das Spektrum der Wasserstoffatome in β-Stellung durch die Möglichkeit des Vorliegens von Verzweigungen kompliziert werden kann.
    Notes: High resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of a number of a number of samples of poly(vinyl chloride) have been obtained. The methinyl proton spectrum consists of three quintets which have been assigned to isotactic, heterotactic and syndiotactic triads. Determinations of the relative numbers of each triad in several samples of polyvinyl chloride indicate that the degree of stereoregularity is not strongly affected by changes in polymerization solvent or temperature.The various conflicting analyses which have been previously suggested for the polyvinyl chloride methylene proton spectrum are also discussed. The 100 Mc.-spectrum of poly(α-deuterovinyl chloride) indicates that the methylene proton spectrum consists of two overlapping triplets from isotactic and syndiotactic diads. The possibility that the methylene proton spectrum is complicated by the presence of branching in poly(vinyl chloride) is also suggested.

    Notes: The mechanism by which TiO2 exerts a phototendering effect on nylon 66 photodegradation has not been previously explained. To aid in the elucidation of this mechanism, the wavelength dependence curves of photodegradation of nylon 66 both with and without TiO2 have been accurately determined. These data, in conjunction with reflectance and phosphorescence measurements, indicate that the phototendering effect of TiO2 proceeds by a chemical rather than an energy transfer mechanism.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Untersuchung von Polypropylen, Poly(3,3,3-D3-propylen) und Poly(1,1-D2-propylen) mit Hilfe von Kernresonanzspektren hoher Auflösung ergab, daß das Spektrum der β-Wasserstoffatome nicht von der stereochemischen Konfiguration beeinflußt ist. Die Taktizität kann jedoch aus dem Spektrum der β-Wasserstoffatome bestimmt werden. Für verschiedene, angenommene Verhältnisse von isotaktischen zu syndiotaktischen Diaden wurde das Spektrum der β-Wasserstoffatome berechnet. Durch Vergleich der theoretischen Spektren mit den beobachteten konnte die Taktizität von Polypropylen bestimmt werden. Diese Methode sollte generell bei Polymeren mit komplizierten Kernresonanzspektren zur Bestimmung der Konfiguration anwendbar sein.
    Notes: High resolution NMR-spectra of polypropylene, poly(3,3,3-d3-propylene), and poly(1,1-d2-propylene) have been obtained and analyzed. Although the methinyl proton spectrum is not influenced by the stereochemical configuration, differences do appear in the methylene proton spectrum which can be related to tacticity. By comparison of calculate methylene proton spectra assuming different ratios of isotactic and syndiotactic diads with the observed spectra, it is possible to obtain information about the tacticity of polypropylene samples. This method of obtaining information about polymer configuration should be generally useful for polymers which have complex NMR-spectra.

Das Spektrum der β-Wasserstoffatome besteht aus zwei Triplets, die isotaktische und syndiotaktische Diaden repräsentieren. Aus der Analyse der Kernresonanzspektren läßt sich schließen, daß durch Hydrolyse von Polyvinylacetat erhaltener Polyvinylalkohol im wesentlichen ataktisch ist. Hydrolyse von Poly(vinyl-t-butyläther) ergibt einen vorwiegend isotaktischen und Hydrolyse von Polyvinyltrifluoracetat ergibt einen geringfügig syndiotaktischen Polyvinylalkohol. Der Einfluß der Konformation auf die Kernresonanzspektren von Polyvinylalkohol wird ebenfalls kurz besprochen.

The methylene proton spectrum consists of two triplets from isotactic and syndiotactic diads. The NMR-spectra indicate that poly(vinyl alcohol) prepared by hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate) is essentially atactic, poly(vinyl alcohol) obtained from poly(vinyl t-butyl ether) is predominately isotactic, and poly(vinyl alcohol) from poly(vinyl trifluoroacetate) is slightly syndiotactic. The influence of conformation on the NMR-spectrum of poly(vinyl alcohol) is also briefly discussed.

    Notes: The wavelength dependence of photodegradation of three “high temperature” aromatic polyamide polymers has been very accurately determined by means of a fast grating spectrograph used in conjunction with a high pressure xenon arc. One of these polymers, the poly-(isophthalamide) of 4,4′-bis(p-aminophenyl)-2,2′bithiazole, was found to be degraded significantly by visible light, especially that of 4140 Å, wavelength. Both the poly-terephthalamide of 1,3-bis(3-aminobenzamide) benzene and Du Pont Nomex, also an aromatic polyamide, were damaged primarily by radiation in the near ultraviolet region. Degradation band maxima for these polymers were observed at 3700 Å, and 3600 Å, respectively. All three thermally resistant polymers were thus found to be degraded by light of much longer wavelength than that which is harmful to other common polymers.
