    Notes: The dam breaking problem in terms of changing water levels behind and ahead of the dam, has been solved in the shallow water model. Here the effect of dam breaking on a symmetric downstream floating body is considered. A forced Duffing equation model, proposed by one of the authors, is used. The analysis has practical implications in terms of how far a marina should be situated from a large dam. Comparison with basin erosion, as caused by a water surface soliton, is instructive.

    Notes: The ChemPro 500‘near-the-patient’analyser, with ChemPro‘Ion Profile’sensor cards, was evalutated for the assay of pH, Ca2+, K+ and Na+ in whole blood samples from patients in the intensive care unit or during surgery for heart or major blood vessel disease, or for liver transplantation. Imprecisions estimated from replicate whole blood measurements were much greater for all four ions than even the least stringent of the generally accepted analytical goals, and much greater than those estimated using quality assurance materials. Comparisons of assayed values with those obtained using standard laboratory instruments showed significant constant and proportional biases. The performance of the ChemPro 500 with the Ion Profile cards gave us no confidence in recommending their use to anaesthetists and intensivists.

    Notes: Degradation of specific myofibrillar proteins has been followed in many studies using SDS-PAGE (denaturing) electrophoresis and these have shown that proteins such as titin, nebulin, troponin-T, desmin, filamin and vinculin are degraded at different rates during postmortem storage of meat. Although informative, electrophoresis is usually restricted to qualitative interpretation of the gels and there have been few studies that have quantitatively linked the degradation of specific proteins to changes in toughness. Improved quantitative methods (including scanning densitometry, image analysis, and modeling approaches) will be necessary to determine the protein and/or protein alterations that cause postmortem tenderization. This approach is complementary to other measurements of proteolysis where the objective is to more adequately explain the variation in toughness.
