    Notes: The problem of calculating the free energy of a ferroelectric random copolymer is discussed in terms of a mean field model. The intrachain interactions are treated in detail, but the interchain interactions are approximated as a function only of the torsional angle at a chain segment and of an order parameter determined by averaging over the conformations of all chains. This formalism is applied to a simple model of the random copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and tetrafluoroethylene. The results of this calculation are combined with the known Curie temperatures of these copolymers to determine the magnitude of the effective interchain interaction over a range of copolymer compositions.

    Notes: A previously described method for calculating the Lorentz factor L for orthorhombic polar crystals is modified to allow discussion of dipoles of finite size. In this approach, the field due to a lattice of point charges ±q separated by a distance d is calculated. The Lorentz factor, which relates the field at a lattice site to the macroscopic polarization, is found as a function of the dipole length d, and is seen to vary appreciably with changes in the separation between the charges. Assumption of a value of 1/3 for L can thus lead to significant errors in determining the self-consistent polarization of crystals consisting of polarizable molecules.

    Notes: A calculation of the equilibrium polarization and of the piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients of β-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) is presented. The effects of both the orthorhombic crystal structure and of the finite separation between the monopoles of the molecular dipole are taken into account. Good agreement is obtained with the experimentally measured polarization and piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients of β-PVF2 films.

    Notes: The possibility of the existence of a 31 helix as a stable phase for poly(vinylidene fluoride) is investigated on the basis of intrachain and interchain interactions. The stable phase for PVF2 at low temperatures is well known to be the α phase, with a conformation of tgtg', even though a calculation of the intrachain energy of a hypothetical helix leads to a value lower than that of the α phase. In this paper we discuss how the interchain energy acts to make the α phase the more stable conformation. Ingredients in this calculation include the compactness of chain packing and the results of imposing the condition of commensurability on the chain structure.

    Notes: The stability of cylindrical bridges of the liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl in an immiscible liquid bath was investigated in the nematic and smectic A phases. In the nematic phase the bridge was found to destabilize at a length-to-diameter (slenderness) ratio R similar to that of ordinary Newtonian fluids. On the other hand, the Bingham behavior of the smectic A phase, i.e., an apparent yield stress, enabled the formation of stable columns with R well in excess of π. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Data on the discharge behavior, thermal loads, halo currents, and runaway electrons have been obtained in disruptions on the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon and L. G. Davis, Fusion Technol. 8, 2A 441 (1985)]. These experiments have also evaluated techniques to mitigate the disruptions while minimizing runaway electron production. Experiments injecting cryogenic impurity "killer" pellets of neon and argon and massive amounts of helium gas have successfully reduced these disruption effects. The halo current generation, scaling, and mitigation are understood and are in good agreement with predictions of a semianalytic model. Results from "killer" pellet injection have been used to benchmark theoretical models of the pellet ablation and energy loss. Runaway electrons are often generated by the pellets and new runaway generation mechanisms, modifications of the standard Dreicer process, have been found to explain the runaways. Experiments with the massive helium gas puff have also effectively mitigated disruptions without the formation of runaway electrons that can occur with "killer" pellets. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetic levitation was used to stabilize cylindrical columns of a paramagnetic liquid in air between two solid supports. The maximum achievable length to diameter ratio Rmax was ∼(3.10±0.07), very close to the Rayleigh–Plateau limit of π. For smaller R, the stability of the column was measured as a function of the Bond number, which could be continuously varied by adjusting the strength of the magnetic field. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Reliable operation of discharges with negative central magnetic shear has led to significant increases in plasma performance and reactivity in both low confinement, L-mode, and high confinement, H-mode, regimes in the DIII-D tokamak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159]. Using neutral beam injection early in the initial current ramp, a large range of negative shear discharges have been produced with durations lasting up to 3.2 s. The total noninductive current (beam plus bootstrap) ranges from 50% to 80% in these discharges. In the region of shear reversal, significant peaking of the toroidal rotation [fφ(0)∼30–60 kHz] and ion temperature [Ti(0)∼15–22 keV] profiles are observed. In high-power discharges with an L-mode edge, peaked density profiles are also observed. Confinement enhancement factors up to H≡τE/τITER-89P∼2.5 with an L-mode edge, and H∼3.3 in an edge localized mode (ELM)-free H mode, are obtained. Transport analysis shows both ion thermal diffusivity and particle diffusivity to be near or below standard neoclassical values in the core. Large pressure peaking in the L mode leads to high disruptivity with βN≡βT/(I/aB)≤2.3, while broader pressure profiles in the H mode gives low disruptivity with βN≤4.2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A workshop on 1–3 August 1989 reviewed the techniques, uncertainties, and experiences of neutron calibration on PLT, TFTR, JET, Tore Supra, JT-60, JIPPT-IIU, Alcator C-Mod, ATF, FT, ASDEX, Textor, and DIII-D. In the summary session, the workshop participants discussed possible consensus neutron calibration techniques appropriate to D-D plasmas in tokamaks. The application of such techniques would facilitate a more accurate comparison of neutron yields from different devices, and also allow new calibration techniques to relate their precision to a reference value. General agreement was reached on the suitability of two techniques: (1) a 252Cf source calibration of epithermal neutron detectors, and (2) threshold neutron activation of Ni foils placed vertically above or below the plasma. This paper will present details on detector positioning, neutron transport calculations, and interlab normalization needed to accomplish the standardized calibration using a Cf neutron source.
