Notes: The electrical switching properties of a polymer current limiter device are studied as a function of applied voltage. For voltages ranging from 1 to 400 V, the switching ratio of the device is observed to vary by more than two orders of magnitude and exhibits a maximum around 200 V. Three different regimes of operation are identified based on the accompanying phenomena. A qualitative model which includes the positive temperature coefficient of resistance effect, an ablation-induced contact separation mechanism, and the effect of dielectric breakdown is developed to explain the observations in the three regimes. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper, the idea that high power switching in conductor-filled polymer composite materials is triggered by the injection of a high energy density at the electrical contact interfaces is tested. A simple theoretical model for the electrical contact interface is developed and used to predict that the time required for switch initiation should be inversely proportional to the square of the product of average initial current and contact resistance. This scaling prediction is tested by means of switching experiments where the switch initiation time is monitored as a function of average initial current level and contact resistance. It is found that the experimental data are consistent with the theory over a variation of more than three orders of magnitude in both initial current level and contact resistance. In addition, it is determined that the data are consistent with the interpretation that polymer ablation is the physical event which triggers switching. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Antennas based on commercially available GaAs as a photoconductor with a subnanosecond photocarrier lifetime have been used to detect subpicosecond free-space electromagnetic radiation (THz pulses). At low optical gating intensities (≤1 mW/100 μm2), GaAs based antennas exhibit a higher responsivity and signal-to-noise ratio than typical antennas based on radiation-damaged silicon-on-sapphire. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the recent measurement and analysis of the transmitted and pseudoreflected optically induced terahertz (THz) beams emitted from a semiconductor wafer under femtosecond laser illumination, where the static electric field is either parallel or perpendicular to the surface. In general, the amplitude of the transmitted THz field is different from that of pseudoreflected THz field, except at the Brewster angle. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the measurement of the dynamics of free-space electro-optic field sensors for pulsed electromagnetic wave radiation. With an optical probe power spanning six decades of linearity and excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is feasible to convert a far-infrared 2D image into an optical 2D image. A simple estimation indicates that 100 mW of optical probe power can achieve an image of 256×256 pixels with a 50 pA signal current per pixel and a SNR (approximately-greater-than)200. We also present a comparison measurement of an ultrafast photoconductive antenna and an electro-optic sensor crystal. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this letter, terahertz (THz) pulse measurements with a chirped probe pulse are analyzed. The method of stationary phase is used to explore the relation between the temporal waveform of an input THz pulse and spectral distribution of an output probe pulse on a detector array. The dependence of the temporal resolution on the chirp rate, the spectrum of the chirped probe beam, and the spectral resolution of the spectrometer is discussed. We confirm that the temporal resolution of the chirped pulse technique is equal to the square root of the product of the original unchirped probe pulse duration and the chirped pulse duration. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate a free-space magneto-optic sampling system to measure the transient magnetic component of a freely propagating terahertz beam. Preliminary results using two magneto-optic sensors are presented. A detection sensitivity of 10−7 T of the picosecond magnetic field in a standard pump/probe configuration is obtained. In the current orthogonal geometry, a 13 ps risetime of the free-space magneto-optic signal is measured. A temporal resolution limited only by the material spin relaxation time in a velocity-matched geometry is anticipated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Theoretical calculation and experimental demonstration indicate that there is an optimal position near the zero optical bias point in a crossed polarizer electro-optic sampling geometry. At this position, free-space electro-optic sampling with a ZnTe sensor crystal has the largest modulation depth for the detection of a weak (THz) modulated signal on a strong laser background. Electro-optic sampling of THz pulses with a modulation depth of 9% and a signal-to-noise ratio better than 50 000:1 is demonstrated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
