    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Des larves deEpilachna varivestis Mulsant, parasitées parPediobius foveolatus (Crawford) ont été récoltées en 1975 dans des champs de soja du Maryland. Les adultes deP. foveolatus issus de ces larves ont été dénombrés et les sexes reconnus. Le nombre de mâles par rapport aux femelles augmente lorsque la disponibilité de la nourriture offerte par l'hôte diminue. Ces renseignements sont utiles pour l'établissement de modéles exponentiels destinés à prévoir les interactions hôtes/parasites.
    Notes: Abstract Larvae ofEpilachna varivestis Mulsant, parasitized byPediobius foveolatus (Crawford), were collected in soybean fields in Maryland during 1975. AdultP. foveolatus emerging from the larvae were sexed and counted. The ratio of males to females increased as the availability of food within the host decreased. This information is useful in development of exponential models predicting hostparasite interactions.

    Description: Principal limitation of cell therapy is cell loss after transplantation because of the interplay between ischemia, inflammation, and apoptosis. We investigated the mechanism of preconditioning of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with oxytocin (OT), which has been proposed as a novel strategy for enhancing therapeutic potential of these cells in ischemic heart. In this study, we demonstrate that rat MSCs express binding sites for OT receptor and OT receptor transcript and protein as detected by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence, respectively. In response to OT (10 –10 to 10 –6 m ) treatment, MSCs respond with rapid calcium mobilization and up-regulation of the protective protein kinase B (PKB or Akt) and phospho-ERK1/2 proteins. In OT-stimulated cells, phospho-Akt accumulates intracellularly close to the mitochondrial marker cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4. Functional analyses reveal the involvement of Akt/ERK1/2 pathways in cell proliferation, migration, and protection against the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of hypoxia and serum deprivation. In addition, OT preconditioning increases MSC glucose uptake. Genes with angiogenic, antiapoptotic, and cardiac antiremodeling properties, such as heat shock proteins (hsps) HSP27, HSP32, HSP70, vascular endothelial growth factor, thrombospondin, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, TIMP-2, TIMP-3, and matrix metalloproteinase-2, were also up-regulated upon OT exposure. Moreover, coculture with OT-preconditioned MSC reduces apoptosis, as measured using terminal transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay in newborn rat cardiomyocytes exposed to hypoxia and reoxygenation. In conclusion, these results indicate that OT treatment evokes MSC protection through both intrinsic pathways and secretion of cytoprotective factors. Ex vivo cellular treatment with OT represents an attractive strategy aimed to maximize the biological and functional properties of effector cells.

    Description: Continental metamorphic core complexes of the northern North American Cordillera were exhumed during the early Paleogene while the Farallon–North American plate convergence rate remained high. Such convergent boundary conditions can excite localized mid-crustal exhumation in numerical simulations of collisions of softer accreted terranes with a rigid, irregular craton margin. Resulting simulated temperature-time ( T - t ) paths match T - t paths interpreted from observed footwall exposures in several core complexes of the northern North American Cordillera, including variability of maximum temperatures, duration of exhumation, and exhumation velocities among individual complexes.

    Description: Smita Amarnath, Leslie M. Stevens, and David S. Stein Formation of the Drosophila embryonic termini is controlled by the localized activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase Torso. Both Torso and Torso's presumed ligand, Trunk, are expressed uniformly in the early embryo. Polar activation of Torso requires Torso-like, which is expressed by follicle cells adjacent to the ends of the developing oocyte. We find that Torso expressed at high levels in cultured Drosophila cells is activated by individual application of Trunk, Torso-like or another known Torso ligand, Prothoracicotropic Hormone. In addition to assays of downstream signaling activity, Torso dimerization was detected using bimolecular fluorescence complementation. Trunk and Torso-like were active when co-transfected with Torso and when presented to Torso-expressing cells in conditioned medium. Trunk and Torso-like were also taken up from conditioned medium specifically by cells expressing Torso. At low levels of Torso, similar to those present in the embryo, Trunk and Torso-like alone were ineffective but acted synergistically to stimulate Torso signaling. Our results suggest that Torso interacts with both Trunk and Torso-like, which cooperate to mediate dimerization and activation of Torso at the ends of the Drosophila embryo.
