Notes: Summary. A total of 1639 women attending the antenatal clinic of Gentofte University Hospital, Copenhagen, during 1986–1987 was randomized into a symphyseal fundal (SF)-group and a control group. The women in the SF-group had their fundal height measured from the 29th week until delivery. The measurements were used along with the other usual screening procedures. The SF-measurements were not found helpful in the prediction of small-for-gestational-age infants and no significant differences were found between the two groups regarding the number of interventions, additional diagnostic procedures, or the condition of the newborns.

Notes: A simplified version of a deuterium pellet gun based on the pipe gun principle is described. The pipe gun is made from a continuous tube of stainless steel and gas is fed in from the muzzle end only. It is indicated that the pellet length is determined by the temperature gradient along the barrel right outside the freezing cell. Velocities of around 1000 m/s with a scatter of ±2% are obtained with a propellant gas pressure of 40 bar.

Notes: A description is given of a nondestructive method utilizing a microwave cavity for measuring the mass of high-speed pellets of solid hydrogen. The cavity is designed for use on a multishot pellet injector, where eight pellets are fired successively with trajectories being parallel and symmetrical around the injector axis. The cavity is cylindrical with the axis coinciding with the injector axis. When a pellet passes through the cavity through holes of 15–16 mm diameter, the change in resonant frequency is proportional to the pellet mass. As a result of the cylindrical symmetry the sensitivity will be identical for all pellets. The frequency shift is measured directly and is converted to a signal proportional to the size of the pellet. The cavity was calibrated with pellets of H2 and D2 containing around 6×1020 atoms and with velocities between 1200 and 1500 m/s. The sensitivity was found to be 300±15 mV/1020 atoms in both cases. This is in fair agreement with estimates made from the dielectric constants of solid H2 and D2. The cavity is built together with two optical detectors for time of flight measurements to form an integrated diagnostic unit.

Notes: The aim of this study was to analyse prospectively the impact of changes in physical activity level on the risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). In 1970–1971, 5249 men aged 40–59 years (mean=48) reported their level of physical activity in leisure time. In 1985–1986, a new baseline was established comprising 75% of survivors who reported their level of physical activity at the time. Some 2894 men aged 53–75, mean=63, free from arteriosclerotic stigmas were included, and their morbidity and mortality were recorded over the next 6 years. Some 181 men had an IHD event; 44 were fatal. A total of 270 men died from all-cause mortality (ACM). Men physically active less than 4 h per week in 1970–1971 had an increased risk of IHD, RR (95% confidence interval)=1.7 (1.1-2.6) compared with men physically more active. For men who reported a sedentary lifestyle, the 1985–1986 RR of IHD was 1.1 (0.9-1.5) compared with more active men. Potential confounders did not explain the results. Among the younger half, those who changed from sedentary to active had a decreased risk of IHD compared with those who remained sedentary (RR=0.6 (0.1-2.5)). In older men, those who changed from sedentary to active had an increased risk of IHD compared with those who remained sedentary (RR=1.9 (0.9-4.2)). In the 6-year follow-up period, the lowest risk of IHD and ACM was found in men who were physically active when reaching midlife and continued to be active. In the younger age group, 40–49 years, taking up a more active lifestyle during the next 15 years was associated with a reduction in the incidence of IHD. In the older age group, 50–59 years, changing from a sedentary to a physically more active lifestyle during the next 15 years was associated with a doubled risk of IHD during the 6-year follow-up period compared with men at the same age who continued to be sedentary. Consequently, we advocate a thorough medical check-up before advising more physical activity in elderly men.

Notes: A flow cryostat allowing independent cooling of eight pipe guns in a multishot deuterium pellet injector is described. The pipe guns are placed symmetrically around the flow cryostat and with a liquid helium consumption of 4–5 l/h the cooling is sufficient for simultaneous formation of eight pellets at 8–9 K with a diameter of 2.1 mm containing up to 8×1020 atoms/pellet. The thermal interaction between the eight pipe guns is sufficiently low to allow successive firing of the guns with time intervals of up to 1 s.

Notes: Five cultivars of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) were analyzed for individual glucosinolates, S-methylcysteine sulfoxide (SMCSO), aroma volatiles and sensory quality. Total glucosinolate content ranged from 47 to 93 μmol μmol·g dry weight1, and SMCSO ranged from 22 to 57 μmol μmol·g dry weight1. A total of 11 glucosinolates were identified in the broccoli cultivars. The major glucosinolates were: progoitrin, glucoiberin, glucoraphanin, glucobrassicin and neo-glucobrassicin and they accounted for more than 95% of the total content. Glucoiberin was only found in appreciable amounts in purple-headed broccoli. Pentanol, pentanal, hexanal, heptanal and nonanal were the most abundant higher boiling volatiles isolated from cooked broccoli using dynamic headspace trapping on Porapak and solvent desorption with diethyl ether. Sensory analysis by a trained panel showed that scores for cooked vegetable odor (‘hay’ and ‘green peapod’) were significantly different between cultivars. In contrast, scores related to Brassica odor (‘cauliflower’ and ‘mustard’) were not significantly different. The content of individual glucosinolates, SMCSO and higher boiling volatiles in the cultivars is discussed in relation to the sensory quality of the cooked product.

Notes: Solid samples of pure and doped deuterium were irradiated by keV electrons and the luminescence of these samples was measured between 200 and 700 nm. In order to separate the intrinsic emissions from impurity-induced luminescence, deuterium was doped with standard air impurities like N2, H2O, O2, and CO. In purified solid deuterium, an emission at 275 nm was observed for the first time and attributed to a transition in D*3 molecules produced via ionization of D2, formation of D3+, and subsequent recombination with electrons. Film-thickness dependence as well as timing experiments corroborate this interpretation.

Notes: Consecutive strum and plasms samples, from a patient receiving 100 ml polyvalent horse anti-venom globulin after a rattlesnake bite, were analysed for circulating immune complexes (IC) and activation of complement factors. IC were determined by two independent methods, a complement consumption assay and a C1q-binding assay. Rapidly rising levels of complement-fixing circulating IC were detected as early as 4-5 days after the serum treatment and distinct IC-activity was recorded in both assays on day 8 when clinical symptoms of serum sickness were observed. The IC remained in circulation for at least 5 weeks. Signs of intravascular C-activation in the form of low C3, C4 and C5 values was noted on day 1 after treatment. Factor B was demonstrable 3–4 days after the snake bite and this factor and C3c attained a peak around day 8, just before maximal suppression of native C3 and C4, 14 days after the globulin treatment C3c and B were declining rapidly while C3 and C4 approached normal values first 36 days after treatment. An increase in heterophilic antibodies to sheep erythrocytes was observed after treatment with anti-venom globulin.

Notes: In a double-blind trial thirty-five patients with moderately-severe nasal polyposis were treated with intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate aerosol for 3 weeks. The dose given (400 γg/day) had only local effect on the symptoms. Judged by diary card scores the nasal symptoms were reduced to 52% of the pre-trial level for the whole group. Corrected for the placebo effect the percentage was 68. The reduction of symptoms was equally apportioned to the three symptoms, sneezing, nasal secretion and blockage. The treatment was tolerated well, and it is concluded that intranasal treatment with beclomethasone dipropionate aerosol offers most patients with nasal polyps a good response without any risk of systemic steroid side-effects.
