    Notes: Photoluminescence (PL) at 77 K is used to study tensile stress variations in chemically etched stripes of a 3-μm-thick GaAs film grown on Si substrate. The etched patterns consist of 1-mm-long stripes with widths ranging from 100 to 4 μm and 4 μm by 4 μm squares. We observed monotonic shift of PL peaks towards shorter wavelength for decreasing stripe width. In particular, when the width of the stripe is less than 7 μm, tensile stress is essentially uniaxial as evident from the magnitude of shift in PL peaks. The polarization characteristics of the PL spectra of these uniaxially stressed stripes are investigated and found to agree well with theoretical predictions.

    Notes: Substrate removal techniques are attractive for the integration of III-V compound semiconductor devices on Si for the integration of optical and electronic devices, and on thermally conducting substrates for heat sinking. Here we discuss the bonding of strained quantum well InGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers on both Si and Cu substrates. The GaAs substrates are then removed by selective etching. Lasing was achieved with pulsed electrical pumping with Jth=2.5 kA/cm2. The performance characteristics of the Si and Cu bonded devices are compared.

    Notes: Abstract We have screened anAplysia atrial gland cDNA library using an egg-laying hormone (ELH) precursor probe and have isolated and characterized five different clones, four of which are full-length and approximately 0.8 kb in size. The characterization of these cDNA clones firmly established the genetic variation of the ELH-related precursors expressed in the atrial gland and provided a rational basis for their revised nomenclature proposed herein. The five precursor ELH-related cDNA sequences obtained predicted the following genetically distinct polypeptide precursors designated as: A, [Asp143]A, [Glu94,Gln139]A, [Pro25]B, and [Phe96,Asp107]Bt. The [Phe96,Asp107]Bt cDNA sequence predicted a truncated form of a B-type precursor. Northern blot analysis of atrial gland RN A identified two transcripts of about equal intensity of 0.9 kb and 1.1kb. Polymerase chain reaction of genomic DNA, together with DNA sequence analysis, resolved previously reported discrepancies between genomic and cDNA sequences of the ELH-related precursors. Taken together the results obtained identified the expression of five ELH-related precursor genes in the atrial gland ofAplysia from at least two genetic loci per haploid genome.

    Description: In health services research, it is common to encounter semicontinuous data characterized by a point mass at zero followed by a right-skewed continuous distribution with positive support. Examples include health expenditures, in which the zeros represent a subpopulation of patients who do not use health services, while the continuous distribution describes the level of expenditures among health services users. Semicontinuous data are typically analyzed using two-part mixture models that separately model the probability of health services use and the distribution of positive expenditures among users. However, because the second part conditions on a non-zero response, conventional two-part models do not provide a marginal interpretation of covariate effects on the overall population of health service users and non-users, even though this is often of greatest interest to investigators. Here, we propose a marginalized two-part model that yields more interpretable effect estimates in two-part models by parameterizing the model in terms of the marginal mean. This model maintains many of the important features of conventional two-part models, such as capturing zero-inflation and skewness, but allows investigators to examine covariate effects on the overall marginal mean, a target of primary interest in many applications. Using a simulation study, we examine properties of the maximum likelihood estimates from this model. We illustrate the approach by evaluating the effect of a behavioral weight loss intervention on health-care expenditures in the Veterans Affairs health-care system.     Description: With food demand set to double, agriculture will account for a larger proportion of total future greenhouse-gas emissions. Yet global food production and land-use scenarios have received relatively little attention in relation to climate change mitigation. This study shows that to avoid dangerous climate change, we must address food demand, as sustainable intensification of agriculture does not, in itself, suffice.
