Notizen: A scheme for phase-locked laser arrays in both one- and two-dimensional configurations is discussed. The scheme can be applied to any laser and its validity has been proved for the case of a pulsed neodimium laser.

Notizen: The purpose of this article is to discuss techniques and present data related to the performance of optical probing of the thickness of thin transparent materials and of the dimensions of mechanical components to a few-microns resolution. The experimental apparatus for high-resolution optical probing is based on nonlinear autocorrelation of partially mode-locked laser pulses. Using the presence of the coherent spike in the autocorrelation trace as a marker, a resolution of the order of a few microns is obtained independently of the length of the pulse. The experimental apparatus consists of a rhodamine 6G dye laser synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of a cw mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. The picosecond pulse train is sent to an optical autocorrelator similar to that used to measure pulse duration. To show the precision and versatility of the technique, applications are presented to the measurement of the thickness of transparent materials (plastic and liquid films), and to the measurement of dimensions of mechanical components.

Notizen: We investigated the exciton dynamics in InGaAs/InP quantum wells using a novel infrared tunable femtosecond laser source, based on an optical parametric frequency converter pumped by a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser. The wide tuning range of this source allowed to excite three different excitonic resonances in the absorption spectrum of the sample. The n=1 heavy-hole excitons are approximately eight times more efficient than free electron-hole plasma in the absorption saturation. This value is much higher than that measured in GaAs quantum wells. The exciton ionization time constant of the n=1 and n=2 heavy-hole excitons has been measured to be 170 and 100 fs, respectively. No evidence of the n=1 light-hole exciton dynamics was found in the measurements. The study of the dynamics at the n=2 heavy-hole resonance allowed the measurement of a n=2 to n=1 intersubband relaxation time of 1 ps. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The nonlinear optical response in uniaxially oriented films of poly[1.6-di(N-carbazolyl)-2, 4-hexadiyne], epitaxially grown on a potassium acid phthalate single crystal, has been measured by femtosecond pump and probe. A fast initial relaxation and the formation of long-lived species at high excitation intensities have been observed. A high third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of 2×10−7 esu has been estimated at 627 nm. The effects of sample orientation on the relaxation dynamics have also been investigated.

Notizen: We report on passive mode-locking of a cw diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser using the nonlinear mirror technique. The nonlinear mirror is made by a lithium triborate frequency doubling crystal and a dichroic mirror that partially transmits the fundamental frequency and totally reflects the second harmonic. The laser produces nearly transform-limited pulses of 10 ps duration and 700 mW average power, with a slope efficiency of 28%. The mode-locking is self-starting under optimized conditions. Long term stability requires accurate control of the crystal temperature. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Pulse compression by sum frequency generation is demonstrated in femtosecond time domain with a type II phase matching BBO crystal. By frequency mixing in BBO crystal infrared signal and idler pulses of 160 fs duration generated by an optical parametric amplifier, sum frequency pulses as short as 34 fs were obtained. Experiments and computer simulations demonstrate the potential of this technique to produce ultrashort pulses with high conversion efficiency. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An optical compression technique which is particularly suitable for ultrashort pulses of high energy is presented. Spectral broadening is achieved by pulse propagation along a hollow-core fused silica waveguide filled with noble gases at high pressure. Pulse compression is then obtained in a prisms dispersive delay line. Experiments performed with pulses of 140 fs duration and 660 μJ energy from a Ti:sapphire laser demonstrate the generation of compressed pulses of 10 fs duration and 240 μJ energy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A hyperlinear increase of radiative quantum efficiencies of poly(para-phenylene)-type ladderpolymer in the blue–green region as a function of subpicosecond excitation intensity is reported. The light emission in the range from 485 to 495 nm undergoes a change from linear behavior to a second order response; the two regimes are separated by a distinct threshold of 3.1 mJ/cm2. Above this threshold, investigation by femtosecond excitation–correlation measurements indicate that the hyperlinear blue emission is associated with a characteristic excitonic depopulation of 2 ps. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Single-mode tunable laser emission is obtained from a stable cavity based on a prototype compound of a class of functionalized electroluminescent oligothiophenes. Laser emission is demonstrated in the red spectral region with a tunability wavelength range of 30 nm, centered at 607 nm. The laser exhibits a well-defined pump threshold and good emission characteristics. The results suggest the use of the family of functionalized oligothiophenes as optical amplifiers covering the whole visible spectral region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
