    Notes: Product quality is influenced by the properties of feedstocks and by production parameters. In contrast to gases and liquids, the quality of solids is also affected by the particle properties, such as size, specific surface area, structure and shape. These are the properties which are primarily changed in solids process engineering.The accuracy and cost of possible methods for the measurement of the particle properties of feedstocks, intermediates and end products are discussed. Examples of the methods discussed are laser diffraction spectrometry, quantitative image analysis and photon correlation spectroscopy.The measuring techniques required for monitoring production processes in solids process engineering are illustrated by simple examples. In the field of process control in particular, there is still room for improvement, since there is a lack of suitable sensors and models. Process monitoring is necessary in order to ensure that product quality meets requirements which are constantly increasing.

    Notes: Describing the disperse state is important for quality assurance, operational safety and the design and modelling of processes, especially in solids technology. Starting materials, intermediates and end products have to be characterized. Apart from representative sampling, preparation greatly influences the results of particle characterization. Very fine particles are normally agglomerated unless a highly dispersed state is stabilized by an additive. For a meaningful measurement, they must be preserved in this state or be definitely dispersed, depending on the type of problem.If the point of interest is the present disperse state with regard to the processing characteristics, e.g. for a filtration, the system should not be changed by the preparation method. If it is necessary to determine the property functions, i. e. the functional relationship between technological and physical properties, it is necessary in general to use a high dispersion energy or a long dispersing time in order to obtain the best achievable dispersion. The finer and more unstable a disperse phase is, the more the correct processing is important for the result. The problems of dispersion in gases and liquids are discussed with some examples.

    Notes: Particle Measurement, State of the Art, Trends - Needs. An excellent overview of the various goals of particle technology, which have long extended far beyond particle size analysis, is provided by POWTECH. The following examples should serve to illustrate the scope of such measurements and the trends noted in this area: measurements for the monitoring of clean rooms; measurements supporting process engineering developments; and process analysis. There is wide range of instrumentation available for the assessment of dispersed product states. Based on proven principles these instruments are becoming more user friendly and available with improved data evaluation; the methods of evaluation are, unfortunately, still not clear to the user. The current trend is in two directions: (1) simultaneous acquisition of several measurements for more accurate determination of the required quantity or for determination of two different quantities and (2) on-line or in-line measurement, which has to be fast, economical, and safe.
