Notes: Experimental measurements of the crystal-size distribution (CSD) clearly indicate a pronounced difference in the dynamic behavior of a 20- and 970-L continuous crystallizer that produces ammonium sulfate. The difference in their circulation time offers a probable explanation for this phenomenon. It causes different supersaturation profiles in the two crystallizers, which leads to internal fines dissolution in the large crystallizer. This contributes to the observed oscillations in the 970-L crystallizer as opposed to the first-order responses in the 20-L crystallizer. To numerically study the effect of the supersaturation profile a dynamic model, from which the MSMPR (mixed suspension mixed product removal) assumption is omitted, is developed. Calculated supersaturation profiles differ considerably for the 20-L, the 970-L and an imaginary 50,000-L continuous evaporative crystallizer. Coincident with changes in the supersaturation profiles, the numerical solution of the model indicates the tendency of large crystallizers to oscillate and supports this suggested explanation.

Notes: In this paper a reciprocating shear cell, which has been developed to measure dynamic wall friction, is described. The cell has also been used to study the attrition behaviour of sand samples at the bounding wall. This attrition causes a considerable change in the angle of wall friction.

Notes: The precipitation of barium sulfate was investigated by photon correlation spectroscopic (PCS) measurements of the growing crystals combined with electrical conductivity measurements of the mother solution. Small silica seeds (36nm) were added to the solution. Therefore, heterogeneous nucleation did not take place on the walls and on the stirrer, which is usually the case, but on the seeds. Hence the growth of the crystals which had nucleated on the seeds could be studied by PCS. In order to avoid the ill-conditioned inversion of the measured raw data, the autocorrelation functions, a population balance model was used to calculate these functions with the help of a kinetic model taken from the literature. The measured an the calculated autocorrelation functions could coincide and adjustable parameters were found from a least-squares fit. The measurements revealed that nucleation is strongly enhanced by PMA-PVS (polymaleic acid-polyvinylsulfonic acid). However, a simple model which assumes langmuir adsorption of PMA-PVS on the crystal surface did not describe the kinetics very well. The nucleation rate in the absence of the additive was found to be J=1.3·1010 exp(-27/In2S) [m-3s-1], while the growth rate was G=2.6·10-8(S-1)2/3 S1/3 exp(-29/3 In S) [ms-1]. These results match results taken from the literature fairly well.

Notes: This paper describes an experimental investigation of the charge acquired by a single polymer particle when striking a plate. The particle was projected from a pneumatic gun with variable velocity and angle of impact. The deflected particle was then captured in a Faraday cup and the net acquired charge so measured. The measurements of charge are related, particularly, to the initial potential of the surfaces and to their work functions.

Notes: The rheological behaviour of a fluidised bed of alumina powder was determined using a specially designed form of rotating viscometer. Several different geometries of the inner and outer cylinder were tested. In the machine the two cylinders can be rotated independently, in either direction, which enables both their relative velocity and absolute velocity to be varied. Thus, the torque on the inner cylinder, strain-rate and the absolute velocity have been chosen as the consistency variables. Some examples of the derived consistency surface are given. The characteristics of these surfaces could be explained by assuming different states of structure, to which a certain mobility can be ascribed. It is proposed that any state of structure which can exist in the bed is an intermediate of two extremes the first being the immobile state which is elastic and has a yield value and the second being the dynamic state which behaves like a Newtonian fluid.

Notes: Accurate particle size characterization of aggregated and agglomerated particles is only possible by analysis of photographs. Both the primary particle size and the morphology of the aggregate are important experimental results. Since standard image analysis techniques for particle size analysis usually recognize only single particles, a new programme, called here Sparse Hough Transformation, was developed for the automated recognition of spherical particles within an aggregate. The method is shown to perform well, even for images with many overlapping particles. The structure of the aggregate is analysed using the fractal dimension, determined from the density-density correlation function. Finite size effects, important when dealing with aggregates containing few primary particles, are taken into account by including a cut-off function.
