    Description: The ongoing rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration is causing rapid increases in seawater pCO2levels. However, little is known about the potential impacts of elevated CO2 availability on the phytoplankton assemblages in the Southern Ocean's oceanic regions. Therefore, we conducted four incubation experiments using surface seawater collected from the subantarctic zone (SAZ) and the subpolar zone (SPZ) in the Australian sector of the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 2011-2012. For incubations, FeCl3 solutions were added to reduce iron (Fe) limitation for phytoplankton growth. Ambient and high (~750 µatm) CO2 treatments were then prepared with and without addition of CO2-saturated seawater, respectively. Non-Fe-added (control) treatments were also prepared to assess the effects of Fe enrichment (overall, control, Fe-added, and Fe-and-CO2-added treatments). In the initial samples, the dominant phytoplankton taxa shifted with latitude from haptophytes to diatoms, likely reflecting silicate availability in the water. Under Fe-enriched conditions, increased CO2 level significantly reduced the accumulation of biomarker pigments in haptophytes in the SAZ and AZ, whereas a significant decrease in diatom markers was only detected in the SAZ. The CO2-related changes in phytoplankton community composition were greater in the SAZ, most likely due to the decrease in coccolithophore biomass. Our results suggest that an increase in CO2, if it coincides with Fe enrichment, could differentially affect the phytoplankton community composition in different geographical regions of the Southern Ocean, depending on the locally dominant taxa and environmental conditions.

    Description: Decadal variations of phytoplankton concentrations in the upstream Kuroshio Extension (KE) region are investigated using outputs from a simple ecosystem model embedded in an eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model, which can well simulate decadal modulations of the KE between stable and unstable states. During the KE stable states, surface phytoplankton concentrations are anomalously suppressed (enhanced) to the south (north) of the KE front. Although the surface phytoplankton concentration anomalies are prominent only during winter to spring as revealed by past studies, it is shown for the first time that significant subsurface anomalies centered around 60 m depth persist even in summer and autumn. Further analyses of nitrogen concentration anomalies suggest that the vertical movement of the isopycnal surfaces, vertical mixing of nutrients, and meridional shifts in the KE jet contribute to the anomalous phytoplankton biomass. Moreover, the remarkable subsurface anomalies in phytoplankton concentration may feedback on to decadal sea surface temperature anomalies by modulating absorption of penetrative shortwave radiation.

    Notes: 1 Although monumental efforts have been made to define the action sites of cough, the importance of neurotransmitter systems in the cough reflex has received limited attention. We studied the roles for four major neurotransmitters [acetylcholine, histamine, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) and dopamine] in the modulation of the cough reflex. 2 Atropine (muscarinic cholinergic blocking agent), pyrilamine maleate (PM, histamine H1 blocker), cimetidine (histamine H2 blocker), 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)-tetralin (8-OH-DPAT, specific 5-HT1A receptor agonist) and SCH-23390 (selective dopamine D1 receptor antagonist) were examined on the cough response to inhaled capsaicin in conscious guinea-pigs. 3 All the drugs significantly decreased the number of capsaicin-induced coughs in a dose-dependent manner. To compare the sensitivity of these drugs on cough response, we calculated the effective doses for 50% inhibition of cough (ED50) when the animals were exposed to 3 × 10−4 m capsaicin. The ED50 values were 0.03 μm kg−1 for atropine, 0.2 μm kg−1 for 8-OH-DPAT, 6.2 μm kg−1 for SCH-23390, 8.5 μm kg−1 for PM and 13.9 μm kg−1 for cimetidine. 4 These findings indicated that all these four neurotransmitters may be involved in the regulation of the cough reflex. Multiple changes of these neurotransmitters in disorders of the central nervous system might synergically affect the cough reflex.

    Notes: Objective To investigate the management of women with asymptomatic ovarian masses, to determine the appropriate duration of follow up, and to identify diagnostic indicators of growing cysts.Design Review of women's hospital records.Setting Tokyo Metropolitan Cancer Detection Center, Japan.Population Two hundred and twenty-five pre- and postmenopausal women with a diagnosis of ovarian cyst ≥6 cm in diameter and normal serum level of CA125, diagnosed between 1 October 1990 and 25 December 1991.Main outcome measure Change in size of cyst as shown by ultrasound.Results Seventy-five months after initial diagnosis, 29 (13%) of the masses had progressed, 31 (14%) had persisted, and 165 (73%) had regressed. One hundred and nine masses (48%) had regressed within six months of the initial diagnosis. In univariate analysis transvaginal ultrasonographic assessment of morphology findings, cyst diameter, carcinoembyronic antigen (CEA) and CA 19.9 were associated with the prognosis of the cyst. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that only the initial serum CA19-9 level and serum CEA level were significant predictors of ovarian masses that regressed (P for trend = 0.004 and 0.02, respectively).Conclusion Simple ovarian cysts in patients with a normal level of CA125 have a low risk for ovarian cancer. Vaginal ultrasound at six months will identify regression of most simple cysts. CA19-9 and CEA at the initial diagnosis are useful parameters to predict future regression of ovarian cysts.

    Notes: Carbon monoxide (CO) can be detected in exhaled air and is increased in asthmatic patients not treated with corticosteroids. However, it is uncertain whether exhaled CO is related to severity of asthma.To study whether exhaled CO is related to severity of asthma in clinical courses, exhaled CO concentrations were measured on a CO monitor by vital capacity manoeuvre in 20 mild asthmatics treated with inhaled β2-agonists alone, 20 moderate asthmatics treated with inhaled corticosteroids, and 15 stable asthmatics treated with high dose inhaled corticosteroids and oral corticosteroids once a month over 1 years. Exhaled CO concentrations were also measured in 16 unstable severe asthmatics who visited the hospital every 7 or 14 days for treatment with high dose inhaled corticosteroids and oral corticosteroids.The mean values of exhaled CO in severe asthma over 1 year were 6.7 ± 9.5 p.p.m. (n = 31, mean ± SD) and significantly higher than those of non-smoking control subjects (1.2 ± 0.9 p.p.m., n = 20, P 〈 0.01). Exhaled CO concentrations in unstable severe asthmatics were significantly higher than those in stable severe asthmatics. However, exhaled CO concentrations in mild and moderate asthmatics did not differ significantly from those in non-smoking control subjects (P 〉 0.20). There was a significant relationship between the exhaled CO concentrations and forced expiratory volume in one second in all asthmatic patients.These findings suggest that exhaled CO concentrations may relate to the severity of asthma and measurements of exhaled CO concentrations may be a useful means of monitoring airway inflammation in asthma.

    Notes: Background Asthma exacerbations are frequently associated with rhinovirus (RV) infections. However, the contribution of airway submucosal gland (SMG) to exacerbations of asthma in RV respiratory infection has not been studied.Objective This study was undertaken to examine whether RV-infected human respiratory SMG cells produce pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines for eosinophils, and augment eosinophil transmigration across human airway epithelium.Methods We infected cultured human tracheal SMG cells with RV14, collected culture media at 1, 3, and 5 days after infection, and measured the chemotactic activity for eosinophils in the culture supernatant using a 48-well microchemotaxis chamber and a 51Cr-labelled eosinophil transmigration assay.Results Exposing a confluent human tracheal SMG cell monolayer to RV14 consistently led to infection. Human SMG cells with RV infection secreted soluble factors activating human eosinophil chemotaxis into the culture supernatant in a time-dependent manner, and the culture supernatant significantly augmented the transmigration of 51Cr-labelled eosinophils through human airway epithelial cell layers from the basal to mucosal side. These effects were completely abolished by a mixture of a monoclonal antibody regulated on activation, normal T cells expressed and secreted (RANTES) and an antibody to granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF).Conclusion These results suggest that human respiratory SMG cells may augment eosinophil transmigration across the airway epithelium through the secretion of RANTES and GM-CSF after RV infection, and may contribute to exacerbations of asthma.
