    Notes: Abstract. The internal parenchyma of the leaf and rhizome in 36 species of Sansevieria is made of dead cells and living cells arranged in a regular pattern. Intercellular spaces are lacking. The walls of dead cells consist of an inner amorphous layer positive to the fluorescence test for callose, a middle suberin-like layer and an outer fibrillar layer. In about half of the species examined, the inner layer forms distinctive thickenings. Detached leaves of Sansevieria lose water very slowly, and are able to recover it quickly. The pattern of leaf dehydration appears to be related to leaf morphology, whereas no relation is evident between the pattern of leaf rehydration and leaf morphology. Neither leaf dehydration nor leaf rehydration pattern is affected by the presence of wall thickenings in the dead parenchyma cells. The fresh weight per unit volume of both turgid and droughted leaves is nearly 1, denoting that the dead cells are filled with water and do not undergo substantial cavitation during drought. The data indicate that the dead parenchyma cells of Sansevieria are a specialized water-storing system.

    Notes: Abstract Stem chlorenchymatous cells from well-watered and water-stressed plants of Cissus quadrangularis L. were examined to evaluate the effect of drying on cell structure and metabolism. At a stem relative water content as low as 52-58%, cellular integrity was maintained, but some qualitative and quantitative alterations occurred. Chlorophyll coment was higher in stressed plants, and the intact photosynthetic apparatus exhibited an increased degree of thylakoid stacking paralleled by a lower chlorophyll a/h ratio. Overnight malate accumulation was very low. Starch was retained but its day/night fluctuation was practically suppressed. Plastosomes were smaller and fewer, and the range of their daily fluctuation was very reduced. Vacuoles underwent fragmentation and accumulated osmiophilic deposits. The maintenance of the cellular integrity accounts for the ability of C. quadrangularis to recover rapidly from water stress.

    Notes: Abstract Background: The combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin has proven effective in the treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the optimal schedule for administration of the two drugs has not yet been determined. In this study we evaluated the activity and toxicity of a weekly gemcitabine and cisplatin schedule. Patients and methods: Thirty-six untreated patients with stage IIIB–IV NSCLC entered the study. Treatment consisted of gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 i.v. and cisplatin 35 mg/m2 i.v., both given weekly on days 1, 8, and 15, followed by one week of rest. Results: Ninety-seven courses (273 weekly administrations) were delivered. The median dose-intensity was 612 mg/m2 per week for gemcitabine (82%) and 21 mg/m2 per week for cisplatin (80%). All 36 of the patients were evaluable for toxicity, and 30 for response. Partial remissions were observed in 12 patients, for an overall response rate of 40% (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 22.5%–57.5%). Most of the partial remissions were seen in IIIB patients (54% of the stage IIIB and 22% of the stage IV patients responded). According to the intent-to-treat principle, the response rate was 33.3% (12 of 36 patients). The median response duration was 9.9 months (range 4–23) and the median survival time 11.8 months (range 1–24). World Health Organization (WHO) grade 3–4 myelotoxicity was: thrombocytopenia in nine patients (25%), neutropenia in six (16.6%) and anemia in six (16.6%); there was very little additional major toxicity. Conclusions: This regimen appears to be active and to have a favourable toxicity profile.

    Notes: Abstract  The dynamics of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) in decomposing beech and fir litters was studied. N, P, Mg and Ca content increased in all litters, whereas K content decreased. Nutrient content correlated to mass loss with a few exceptions for K and P. Final N, K, Mg and Ca content was higher the lower the initial content and the higher the initial C/nutrient ratio was. Final P content correlated neither with initial P content nor with initial C/P ratio. All litters lost K very quickly, mainly by leaching. P was lost initially by leaching, although at a lower rate than K, and later by mineralization. Mg, Ca and N showed alternate phases of accumulation and release. Mg losses by leaching occurred only in litters with high initial Mg content; in litters with low initial Mg content, Mg losses occurred by mineralization. Ca and N were lost only by mineralization. A mobility series K〉P〉Mg〉Ca=N is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Pattern and magnitude of stem gas exchange were studied under controlled conditions on two CAM species of the genus Cissus differing in morphological features. In the cactus-like liana Cissus quadrangularis, at water vapour deficit of the air (VPD) lower than 400 mPa Pa−1 during daytime, under 24/16°C and 27/16°C temperature regime, CO2 uptake occurred during daytime and nighttime but night fixation was responsible for 74 and 77% respectively of the CO2 fixed during the whole diurnal cycle; the contribution of night fixation increased up to 84% at VPD of 590 mPa Pa−1 under 27/15°C. In Cissus sp., a slightly succulent xerophytic liana with mesophytic deciduous leaves, at 27°C day temperature and VPD of 520–540 mPa Pa−1, under both 12 and 16°C night temperature, CO2 uptake occurred exclusively during the night; however at lower day temperatures (18–20°C) and lower VPD (169–269 mPa Pa−1) substantial CO2 uptake was observed in the light. Transpiration was higher in Cissus sp. than in Cissus quadrangularis under all of the conditions applied; moreover night transpiration in Cissus sp. contributed more to total day transpiration as compared with Cissus quadrangularis. The results support the opinion that the nocturnal gas exchange has a preeminent role in Cissus sp. as compared with Cissus quadrangularis. Indeed under conditions which enhance evaporative demand even well-watered plants of Cissus sp. resort totally to night fixation. In contrast Cissus quadrangularis which shows a larger resistance to water loss and possesses an abundant water storing parenchyma as compared with Cissus sp. resorts totally to night CO2 fixation only under drought stress.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to relate regional variation in litter mass-loss rates (first year) in pine forests to climate across a large, continental-scale area. The variation in mass-loss rate was analyzed using 39 experimental sites spanning climatic regions from the subarctic to subtropical and Mediterranean: the latitudinal gradient ranged from 31 °N to 70 °N and may represent the the largest geographical area that has ever been sampled and observed for the purpose of studying biogeochemical processes. Because of unified site design and uniform laboratory procedures, data from all sites were directly comparable and permitted a determination of the relative influence of climateversus substrate quality viewed from the perspective of broad regional scales. Simple correlation applied to the entire data set indicated that annual actual evapotranspiration (AET) should be the leading climatic constraint on mass-loss rates (Radj 2 = 0.496). The combination of AET, average July temp. and average annual temp. could explain about 70% of the sites' variability on litter mass-loss. In an analysis of 23 Scots pine sites north of the Alps and Carpatians AET alone could account for about 65% of the variation and the addition of a substrate-quality variable was sufficiently significant to be used in a model. The influence of litter quality was introduced into a model, using data from 11 sites at which litter of different quality had been incubated. These sites are found in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland. At any one site most ( ≫ 90%) of the variation in mass-loss rates could be explained by one of the litter-quality variables giving concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus or water solubles. However, even when these models included nitrogen or phosphorus even small changes in potential evapotranspiration resulted in large changes in early-phase decay rates. Further regional subdivision of the data set, resulted in a range of strength in the relationship between loss rate and climatic variables, from very weak in Central Europe to strong for the Scandinavian and Atlantic coast sites (Radj 2 = 0.912; AETversus litter mass loss). Much of the variation in observed loss rates could be related to continentalversus marine/Atlantic influences. Inland locations had mass-loss rates lower than should be expected on the basis of for example AET alone. Attempts to include seasonality variables were not successful. It is clear that either unknown errors and biases, or, unknown variables are causing these regional differences in response to climatic variables. Nevertheless these results show the powerful influence of climate as a control of the broad-scale geography of mass-loss rates and substrate quality at the stand level. Some of these relationships between mass-loss rate and climatic variables are among the highest ever reported, probably because of the care taken to select uniform sites and experimental methods. This suggest that superior, base line maps of predicted mass-loss rates could be produced using climatic data. These models should be useful to predict the changing equilibrium litter dynamics resulting from climatic change.

    Description: We report on the investigation of a mass stranding of 68 short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that occurred in Golfo Nuevo, Península Valdés, Argentina in March 2018. Twenty-one of the stranded dolphins were returned alive to the sea, while 47 animals died. Dead dolphins included all ages, with more males than females (29 males and 18 females). The cause of death investigation reported here is restricted to 15 adult individuals and one fetus on which a full set of diagnostics was prioritized due to limited funding. Our results demonstrate that the death of 16 dolphins assessed in this study was not due to obvious human effects (e.g. bycatch) or underlying pathologies, as all animals were in good body condition and had no external evidence of injuries. Infections by Morbillivirus, Influenza A virus, Sarcocystis spp., Toxoplasma gondii, or Neospora caninum, as well domoic acid (DA) toxicity were ruled out as ethiologies in this event. Notably, results on exposure to paralytic shelfish toxins (PSP) were the only investigated cause of death found positive. This is the first documentation of exposure to PSP toxins in short-beaked common dolphins from the Argentine Sea. At present our results are insufficient to assess whether PSP toxin exposure played a role in the death of the stranded dolphins. Notwithstanding, the full documentation and investigation of the most commonly reported pathogens and toxins involved in cetacean mass strandings allowed us to clear the most relevant health differentials and suggests areas for future study. Additional potential hypothesis related to factors known or speculated to cause cetacean mass strandings are currently being explored within the ecological context at the time of the event.

    Description: The aim of this paper is to recognize and map the Somma-Vesuvius volcano landslide-prone areas by means of multi-disciplinary terrain analysis and classification; in detail, high-resolution DTM of landslides areas occurred over long time periods, remote sensing, and geophysical and geomorphological data are presented for assessing hydrogeological hazard parameters of this volcanic district. The Somma-Vesuvius volcano, due to its explosive volcanism and the dense urbanization of the surrounding area with a population exceeding 650,000, is one of the most dangerous active volcanoes of the world. The main hazard of the perivolcanic area is associated to effusive eruptions and explosive Plinian and sub-Plinian eruptions, alternated to long-lasting quiescence periods. Moreover, additional hazard is related to lahars: flows of unconsolidated debris and water that typically include fragments of volcanic origin, colluvium, and soil. The features of lahars can range from debris flow to hyperconcentrated flow. The most important lahars phenomena of the Somma-Vesuvius occurred with the main historical eruptions of 79 A.D., 472 A.D., and 1631 (Mastrolorenzo et al. 2002; Rosi et al. 1993; Rosi et al. 1996). Recently, remobilization of the pyroclastic cover has produced several debris flows and alluvial phenomena that invaded the surrounding plains affecting towns and roads. Our methodological approach is based on landslides data recognizing and mapping both from geological maps, papers, historical chronicles, and from aerial photos, orthophoto, and available DTM image analysis of the Somma-Vesuvius complex. Through detailed study of this material the main landslides depositional areas have been surveyed; moreover, other geophysical and geomorphological parameters have been considered jointly with the landslides occurrence in order to correlate and interpret the soil movements phenomena. The analysis of several space-time series of data, together with the updated territorial information has been carried out through the Geographic Information System (GIS) (software ArcGIs 9.3), in order to store, manage and process large amount of spatial data. Finally, the achievement of landslide hazard high-resolution mapping of the Somma-Vesuvius volcano is performed in this paper through investigation of the flowslides deposits (lahar) of this area (Di Crescenzo et al. 2008). Actually, the recent heavy urbanization of landslide-prone areas has increased their vulnerability, consequently buildings and infrastructure could be seriously damaged and safety of the people endangered (Davoli et al., 2001). Therefore the obtained maps are necessary for identifying the future inundation areas and for evaluating the possible hydrogeological risk scenarios.
