    Description: Due to the scarcity of water resources in the "Mancha Húmeda" Biosphere Reserve, the use of treated wastewater has been proposed as a solution for the conservation of natural threatened floodplain wetlands. In addition, wastewater treatment plants of many villages pour their effluent into nearby natural lakes. We hypothesized that certain avian pathogens present in wastewater may cause avian mortalities which would trigger avian botulism outbreaks. With the aim of testing our hypothesis, 24 locations distributed in three wetlands, two that receive wastewater effluents and one serving as a control, were monitored during a year. Sediment, water, water bird feces, and invertebrates were collected for the detection of putative avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens type A, and Clostridium botulinum type C/D. Also, water and sediment physicochemical properties were determined. Overall, APEC, C. perfringens , and C. botulinum were significantly more prevalent in samples belonging to the wetlands which receive wastewater. The occurrence of a botulism outbreak in one of the studied wetlands coincided with high water temperatures and sediment 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), a decrease in water redox potential, chlorophyll a , and sulfate levels, and an increase in water inorganic carbon levels. The presence of C. botulinum in bird feces before the onset of the outbreak indicates that carrier birds exist and highlights the risk of botulinum toxin production in their carcasses if they die by other causes such as bacterial diseases, which are more probable in wastewater wetlands.

    Notes: Results of an experimental study of a relativistic plasma generated by means of the gyromagnetic autoresonance in the plasma synchrotron accumulator called GYRAC-D are presented. The use of a new heating scheme in the regime of a train of pulses with the further accumulation of the generated plasma in a mirror magnetic configuration and improvement of vacuum conditions owing to a system of external injection make it possible to obtain a plasma with the following parameters: Te≈200 keV, ne≈1×109 cm−3, and lifetime approximately 1 s. No major obstacles to further increase the density are observed.

    Notes: It has been extensively described that neuronal differentiation involves the signalling through neurotrophin receptors to a Ras-dependent mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade. However, signalling pathways from other neuritogenic factors have not been well established. It has been reported that cAMP may activate protein kinase (PKA), and it has been shown that PKA-mediated stimulation of MAPK pathway regulates not only neuritogenesis but also survival. However, extracellular regulated kinases (ERKs) mediated pathways are not sufficient to explain all the processes which occur in neuronal differentiation. Our present data show that: in cAMP-mediated neuritogenesis, using the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line, there exists a link between the activation of PKA and stimulation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Both kinase activities are essential to the initial elongation steps. Surprisingly, this neuritogenic process appears to be independent of ERKs. While the activity of PI3K is essential for elongation and maintenance of neurites, its inhibition causes retraction. In this neurite retraction process, GSK3 is activated. Using both a pharmacological approach and gene transfer of a dominant negative form of GSK3, we conclude that this induced retraction is a GSK3-dependent process which in turn appears to be a common target for transduction pathways involved in lysophosphatidic acid-mediated and PI3K-mediated neurite retraction.

    Notes: A 70-year-old man complained of two distinct types of unilateral headache during the past fifteen years. When the illness began, the pain was intermittent and short-lasting. In successive years, the crises appeared in clusters and lasted weeks to months. At present, the pain occurs daily, and is located on the right side, from the forehead supraorbitally to the temporal region. Some attacks last 30 sec and are accompanied by tearing, conjunctival injection, rhinorrhea and a subjective need to micturate. Other headaches last 1/2-1 h and are occasionally accompanied by local ipsilateral dysautonomic symptoms. Attacks of pain are provoked by movements of the trunk and neck. A vascular malformation in the right cerebellopontine angle was demonstrated on cranial CT and MRI, and by angiography.

    Notes: Picosecond pump–probe experiments at room temperature on a bulk GaAs microcavity are presented. The microcavity device is designed to adjust the cavity mode energy 15 meV below the band gap energy of the intracavity bulk GaAs material. For low pump-energy densities (∼μJ/cm2), ultrafast modulation of the reflectivity is demonstrated due to the purely coherent refractive index change. A 5:1 contrast ratio is achieved and shows the potential of the semiconductor microcavities for implementation in ultrafast all optical switching. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this work, we studied the expression and function of CD22 in murine B cells. CD22 has been previously characterized as an activation marker of mature B lymphocytes. However, we found that CD22 is expressed early during the ontogeny of B cells in the bone marrow and spleen, and was found on B cells isolated from all the different lymphoid compartments. We also found that B cells stimulated through the B-cell antigen receptor (BCR), CD38 and CD40, upregulated CD22 expression to maximal levels within 24 h after stimulation, but that the levels of CD22 declined at later times (48 and 72 h). CD22 is rapidly phosphorylated after BCR signal transduction, and is believed to downregulate B-cell activation. In this study, we did not detect CD22 phosphorylation in activated B cells after CD38 or CD40 cross-linking, even though CD22 was clearly phosphorylated in the BCR-stimulated B cells. Consistent with this, we found no evidence of physical association between CD38 or CD40 and CD22 in B cells. The lack of association or phosphorylation of CD22 induced by CD38 and CD40 cross-linking indicates that CD22 may not downregulate the activation induced by these two molecules.

    Notes: Background: Several studies have shown that allergy to natural rubber latex is associated with cross-reactivity to certain foods such as tomato and potato. The objective was to investigate the clinical and immunologic differences between a group of patients with clinical allergy to tomato and latex and another which had only clinical allergy to tomato. We also aimed to assess, in vitro, the relationship of tomato and latex allergens, which could explain the cross-reactivity. Methods: Forty patients with histories of adverse reactions to tomato and IgE-mediated hypersensitivity were enrolled in the study. Tomato, latex, and potato components were analyzed by SDS–PAGE immunoblotting. CAP and immunoblot inhibition were used to study allergen cross-reactivity. Results: Patients from group A had a mean age of 13.2 years, and in group B the mean age was 21.7 years. In group B, 9/10 patients belonged to the latex-fruits syndrome. All patients of both groups tolerated potato. Immunoblotting patterns obtained with patients' sera from pool A showed IgE-binding bands to tomato ranging from 44 to 46 kDa and a triple band at 67 kDa. For latex, there was a strong binding at 44 kDa, and potato showed a strong band of 44 kDa and a 67-kDa triple band. In pool B, the binding to the band of 44 kDa in latex and tomato was more intense than in pool A. In pool A, immunoblot inhibition with potato allergen showed an intense inhibition of the three allergens (potato, latex, and tomato); with latex, inhibition was partial and with tomato, a complete inhibition of tomato and latex was observed, and a partial inhibition of potato. In pool B, the inhibition pattern followed a similar tendency to pool A. The CAP inhibition confirmed the high rate of cross-reactivity between tomato, potato, and latex. Conclusions: In our study, tomato, potato, and latex showed a common band of 44–46 kDa probably corresponding to patatin. This protein could be implicated in the high cross-reactivity between tomato, latex, and potato observed in the immunoblot and CAP inhibition.
