Notes: Base metal technology, mainly using Ni electrodes in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), is now well established. This technology requires a so-called reoxidation treatment after sintering the MLCCs in a reducing atmosphere to guarantee a sufficient electrical reliability. Large numbers of electrodes, and production of physically larger components for high-voltage components, are two technological trends that make the control of the reoxidation process rather difficult. The reoxidation process has been studied to determine oxygen diffusion pathways into commercial MLCCs, using 18O tracer diffusion and finite element calculations. In MLCCs oxygen diffusion mainly occurs along the Ni electrodes. Furthermore, the reoxidation process is mostly controlled by the thermodynamic potential of the Ni/NiO equilibrium in the interior of the capacitor, but it is the short circuit diffusion along the interface of the electrode that controls the kinetics of the oxygen transport into the interior of the capacitor device.

Notes: Pieces of saw-cut La0.85Sr0.15MnO3 were joined at 1150° and 1250°C under a compressive stress. The strains to form the joints were ∼0.1. Joints formed by plastic deformation were examined using scanning electron microscopy, and they were indistinguishable from the bulk. The room-temperature direct-current resistivity of the joined pieces was identical to that measured in the bulk material. This indicated that a sound, electrically conducting joint could be formed using plastic deformation (grain-boundary sliding) with little surface preparation.

Notes: The steady-state compressive creep of Al2O3 with 10 vol% SiC whiskers having grain sizes of 1.2, 2.3, and 4.0 μm has been measured at 1400°C in argon. The creep rate is related to the free volume within the whisker network, not the nominal grain size. The results are consistent with diffusional-controlled creep with different contributions from grain-boundary sliding. Under low stresses, only Liftshitz sliding is possible and the diffusional process controls deformation, while at stresses over a threshold, Rachinger sliding is the mechanism controlling deformation. The evolution between Liftshitz and Rachinger sliding is marked by a significant increase in the value of the stress exponent.

Notes: The models used to describe zinc oxide-based varistors rely on diffusion and defect data obtained using techniques that have been replaced by more modern methods such as secondary ion mass spectrometry. We report values for oxygen diffusivities in undoped, single-crystal ZnO as a function of temperature and orientation. Evaporation was taken into consideration when analyzing experimental results. Within experimental error, the energetics of diffusion are isotropic, but are slightly faster in the c-direction. In comparing diffusion data from the literature, the intrinsic activation energy was estimated to be between 3.6 and 4.2 eV. Comparisons with recent theoretical calculations of relevant defect energies are discussed.
