Notes: Self-focusing of ps laser pulses (λ=790 nm) due to the nonlinear Kerr effect is shown to provide an easy and flexible method for producing bulk structures with dimensions on the order of 10 μm without damaging the entrance or exit surfaces of the material. The depth at which damage occurs can be controlled by adjusting either the pulse energy or pulse length. A study of the dependence of structure depth on the square root of the laser power for a given pulse length provides a straightforward method for determining the nonlinear index of refraction (Kerr coefficient), n2. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A significant improvement in the quality of ultrafast laser microstructuring of dielectrics is demonstrated by using temporally shaped pulse trains with subpicosecond separation. The sequential energy delivery induces a material softening during the initial steps of excitation changing the energy coupling for the subsequent steps. This leads to lower stress, cleaner structures, and provides a material-dependent optimization process. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An ancient copper mine from southern Sinai, within the crystalline rocks of the Arabo–Nubian Massif, contains the arsenic-rich copper minerals koutekite (Cu5AS2) and domeykite (Cu3As), associated with native copper. In this site, ancient quarrying activity is found next to Chalcolithic and Early-Bronze Age settlements. Arsenic-rich copper tools of these ages were found in Israel. The ore-source of these tools is still unknown and some believe that it was imported from Armenia. This arsenic copper occurrence, first reported here, may point to the ore-source of the arsenic-rich copper artifacts manufactured in the local copper industry.

Notes: The Judean Mountains’ anticlinorium, Israel, a part of the Syrian Arc fold system, underwent several phases of compressional folding, uplift and faulting in post-Turonian through Quaternary times. This study emphasizes the earliest tectonic phase of earIy Late Coniacian age. Ostracode biozonation clearly indicates the duration and extension of Senonian sedimentation and timing of onlap over the evolving Judean Mountains’ structure.
