    Providence :American Mathematical Society,
Keywords: Quantum field theory--Congresses. ; Electronic books.
Description / Table of Contents: This book is the first volume of the proceedings of the Canadian Mathematical Society Annual Seminar on Mathematical Quantum Theory, held in Vancouver in August 1993. The seminar was run as a research-level summer school concentrating on two related areas of contemporary mathematical physics. The subject of the first session, quantum field theory and many-body theory, is covered in the present volume; papers from the second session, on Schrödinger operators, are in volume 2. Each session featured a series of minicourses, consisting of approximately four one-hour lectures, designed to introduce students to current research in a particular area. In addition, about thirty speakers gave one-hour expository lectures. With contributions by some of the top experts in the field, this book provides an overview of the state of the art in mathematical quantum field and many-body theory.

Notes: The irreversible random sequential adsorption of spherical particles onto the surface of a spherical substrate was investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. The planar angle α subtended by the adsorbate particles on the substrate ranged from 22.5° to the tetrahedral value of 109.47°. Results are reported both at fixed coverage and at fixed time. The average maximum coverage θmax, which peaks at α=90°, is compared to known close-packed densities for the geometries considered. The applicability of Feder's limiting law, expressing the time dependence of the coverage as proportional to t−1/2, is confirmed for α≤90°. For α≥109.47°, a t−2/3 dependence is found instead.

Notes: The standard description of electrokinetic phenomena deals with a particle whose charge is uniformly smeared over its surface and considers ion transport only within a Gouy–Chapman diffuse layer. Experimental studies with colloidal dispersions have shown that this model is not applicable to many systems. To encompass a wider class of behavior, the standard model was extended to include ion migration within the Stern layer, the region between the shear envelope and the rigid particle. Computations show that Stern layer transport increases the conductivity and dielectric response of suspensions as well as the magnitude of the ζ potential inferred from mobility measurements. Model predictions are compared with experimental measurements on two well-defined systems—colloidal silica and a polymer latex. The inclusion of surface transport processes markedly improves agreement between theory and the experimental data. For example, in situations where the standard theory underpredicts the measured dielectric increments by factors of 2 or 3, the dynamic Stern layer model yields results within 5% to 20% of the experimental data at frequencies in the kHz range.

Notes: SUMMARY The aim of this study was to assess the possible influence of various topical fluoride agents on the rate of saliva secretion. Fifteen healthy volunteers, both males and females, aged 20–60 years, participated in this study. Aminfluorides and monofluorophosphate products in gel, toothpaste and rinse states were used. Each subject brushed or rinsed the teeth and mouth for 2 minutes. Secreted saliva was collected for 5 minutes. Salivary secretion was significantly greater after toothbrushing with amin-fluoride compounds as compared to toothbrushing with monofluorophosphate. There was a tendency for an increased saliva flow rate with higher fluoride concentration of the aminfluoride.
