    Notes: The leeward fringing reef at Fantome Island (central Great Barrier Reef province) is a carbonate body which has developed under the influence of terrigenous sedimentation. The reef flat is up to 1000 m wide and is surfaced by mobile sand and gravel, with almost all live corals restricted to the seaward rim. The reef slope has coral columns and heads on the upper part, but below 5 m water depth it is a muddy substrate with scattered mounds of branching corals.Three high recovery cores show the reef is up to 10 m thick and developed over a gently sloping terrace of weathered Pleistocene alluvium. Three post-glacial stratigraphic units are recognised: (1) carbonate reef top unit of coral rudstone and framestone including Sinularia spiculite; (2) lower slope unit of coral floatstone in a terrigenous muddy matrix; and (3) transgressive basal unit of skeletal arkosic sand. The acid insoluble content of matrix and of individual corals increases downwards. Coral growth rates decrease downwards, reflecting slower growth in muddier environments.Radiocarbon dating shows that the reef prograded seaward at almost stable sea level. An average vertical accumulation rate of 6.7 mm yr-1 is indicated. Two age reversals are interpreted as material transported by storms or by erosion in response to a late Holocene sea-level fall.The carbonate reef top unit has developed adjacent to, and is environmentally compatible with a muddy terrigenous, lower slope unit. Terrigenous influx has not changed during the Holocene, and terrigenous content of sediments is controlled by deposition on the reef slope of fine sediment winnowed from the reef flat and concentration of coarse sediment in the transgressive basal sheet.

    Notes: Abstract The degree of internal bioerosion was examined in the dead basal portions of live branches of the scleractinian coral Acropora formosa collected from six reefs across the continental shelf in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The bioeroders included the sponges Cliona spp. and Cliothosa spp., the boring bivalve Lithophaga sp., and sipunculid and polychaete worms. Total internal bioerosion exhibited higher means and variances inshore and at the mid-shelf than the outer shelf specimens, which were characterized by low means and low variances. Bioerosion by Cliothosa and all sponges combined declined slightly across the shelf. Bivalves accounted for a small proportion of the internal bioerosion in A. formosa. The bioerosion pattern exhibited by worms (polychaetes and sipunculids) was similar in pattern to that of the sponges. All groups exhibited lowest levels of bioerosion at the outer shelf. Highest variance in the data was observed at the intra-branch/intra-colony and the intercolony levels. Inter-site variance was high in worms and vivalves. Boring sponges generally dominated the bioeroder community. The relative abundance of Cliona declined on the outer shelf while the relative abundance of worms increased. Percent bioerosion in Acropora formosa was 2–3 times higher than in Porites lobata in this region. The low level of bioerosion at the outer shelf versus the inner- and mid-shelf areas may be partially due to lower levels of productivity and lower concentrations of terrestrially derived organic matter. Other potential factors may include higher fish grazing/predation activity on the outer shelf.

    Notes: Abstract Surficial sediment samples and specimens of the filter-feeding marine mussel, Mytilus edulis, were collected at thirteen sites near a Pb/Zn ore stockpile and smelting complex (Canada). Aside from measuring the total S content in the sediment samples, each of these samples were subjected to a sequential extraction procedure designed to determine the partitioning of Fe and Pb among various geochemical phases and compared with the Pb levels measured in the mussel tissues. About one third of the Fe and more than 90% of the Pb were extracted from the sediments. Sediments collected within Belledune Harbour generally yielded the greatest amount of Pb whereas the highest levels of S were measured in Dalhousie Harbour sediments. Regression analysis indicated that the total S content in the sediments played an important role in defining the Pb accumulation in the mussel tissues.

    Description: A marine bacterium associated with soft coral Sinularia polydactyla collected from Bandengan water, Jepara, North Java Sea, Indonesia, was successfully screened for antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacterium Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus K6.72 isolated from infected monkey of the island of Bali and identified based on morphological, biochemical and molecular methods. Marine bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas sp. based on its 16S rDNA and was found to amplify gene fragments of Non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS). Cloning and subsequent sequencing, a 360 bp long DNA fragment was obtained and the deduced amino acid sequence showed conserved signature regions for peptide synthetases and revealed a high similarity of 61.1% to genes peptide synthetase of Bacillus subtilis
