    Notes: The decay of a spatial transient temperature grating created within the molecular glass former phenolphthalein-dimethylether (PDE) relates to the hydrodynamic heat diffusion and the dynamics of local density fluctuations. The characteristics of the latter process agree well with the structural α relaxation observed by photon correlation and dielectric spectroscopy near and above the glass transition temperature Tg. When the α-relaxation time approaches the experimental timescale set-in by the thermal diffusivity the specific heat undergoes a dispersion. In either side of this dynamic regime, heat diffusion and α relaxation are independent modes. "Two fluid'' models of the vitreous state conform to the experimental observations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: During the last 10 years, the signal-averaged electrocardiographic (SAECG) method has been proposed for a growing amount of clinical applications. As a screening method for increased risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias it has demonstrated its value especially in risk stratification after myocardial infarction (Ml) and in the evaluation of patients with unexplained syncope. Its value in risk prediction is now also proven in patients treated with thrombolytic therapy.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsIn patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, the SAECG is helpful for detecting propensity to spontaneous ventricular tachycardia. P wave signal averaging has been demonstrated to identify patients with propensity to atrial arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation. Also, the diagnosis of sick sinus syndrome can be enhanced using this method.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsSo far, the use of SAECG in other patient populations except coronary heart disease has been very limited. However, the results of the recent studies recommend the utilization of this technique also in children and in the elderly, adjusting the findings with the effects of body size and age on the SAECG.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThe SAECG has a definite independent role in improving the predictive accuracy of conventional risk-evaluation techniques in patients with Ml or cardiomyopathy. New patient populations like children and the elderly enlarge the number of patients benefiting of this method. New clinical applications of the SAECG method, such as detection of the propensity to atrial arrhythmias, ischemia and drug effects, are currently merging. Combining the time- and frequencydomain analysis of the SAECG with other methods relevant for the clinical problem is the way to optimize the use of this sophisticated noninvasive technique in clinical practice.

    Description: Stratigraphic records from northwestern Pangea provide unique insight into global processes that occurred during the latest Permian extinction (LPE). We examined a detailed geochemical record of the Festningen section, Spitsbergen. A stepwise extinction is noted as: starting with (1) loss of carbonate shelly macrofauna, followed by (2) loss of siliceous sponges in conjunction with an abrupt change in ichnofabrics as well as dramatic change in the terrestrial environment, and (3) final loss of all trace fossils. We interpret loss of carbonate producers as related to shoaling of the lysocline in higher latitudes, in relationship to building atmospheric CO 2 . The loss of siliceous sponges is coincident with the global LPE event and is related to onset of high loading rates of toxic metals (Hg, As, Co) that we suggest are derived from Siberian Trap eruptions. The final extinction stage is coincident with redox-sensitive trace metal and other proxy data that suggest onset of anoxia after the other extinction events. These results show a remarkable record of progressive environmental deterioration in northwestern Pangea during the extinction crises.

    Description: Background and Purpose— Patient selection is crucial in the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke patients. Baseline computed tomographic (CT) images, evaluated with the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Scale (ASPECTS), are considered significant predictors of outcome. In this study, we evaluated CT images and perfusion parameters, analyzed with ASPECTS, as final outcome predictors after endovascular stroke treatment. Methods— We analyzed a cohort of patients with acute ischemic stroke and endovascular treatment. Patients with an occlusion of the M1 segment and multimodal CT imaging were included. CT perfusion data were reconstructed using commercial software. Two experienced neuroradiologists separately reviewed and scored CT and CT perfusion images with the ASPECTS score. Parameters were compared between patients with poor and with favorable follow-up outcome. Significantly different variables were further analyzed by forward stepwise logistic regression. Results— Fifty-one patients were included in our study. Baseline characteristics did not differ between patients with favorable and poor outcomes. No significant difference in recanalization status, the various times, or CT ASPECTS was demonstrated between these 2 groups. Significant differences were demonstrated for age ( P =0.0049), cerebral blood volume ASPECTS ( P =0.0007), and between cerebral blood volume and cerebral blood flow ASPECTS ( P =0.0045). Cerebral blood volume ASPECTS 〉7 demonstrated the highest sensitivity and specificity for favorable outcome with 84% and 79%, respectively. Conclusions— CT perfusion parameters, evaluated with ASPECTS, are optimal predictors of outcome and are more sensitive and specific than CT ASPECTS in the prediction of favorable outcome. Use of these parameters in treatment decisions could reduce futile recanalizations.

    Description: Changes in the location of Northern Hemisphere storm tracks may cause significant societal and economic impacts under future climate change, but projections of future changes are highly uncertain and drivers of long-term changes are poorly understood. Here we develop a late Holocene storminess reconstruction from northwest Spain and combine this with an equivalent record from the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, to measure changes in the dominant latitudinal position of the storm track. The north-south index shows that storm tracks moved from a southern position to higher latitudes over the past 4000 yr, likely driven by a change from meridional to zonal atmospheric circulation, associated with a negative to positive North Atlantic Oscillation shift. We suggest that gradual polar cooling (caused by decreasing solar insolation in summer and amplified by sea-ice feedbacks) and mid-latitude warming (caused by increasing winter insolation) drove a steepening of the winter latitudinal temperature gradient through the late Holocene, resulting in the observed change to a more northern winter storm track. Our findings provide paleoclimate support for observational and modeling studies that link changes in the latitudinal temperature gradient and sea-ice extent to the strength and shape of the circumpolar vortex. Together this evidence now suggests that North Atlantic winter storm tracks may shift southward under future warming as sea-ice extent decreases and the mid- to high-latitude temperature gradient decreases, with storms increasingly affecting southern Europe.

    Description: Rho kinase (ROCK) has been implicated in physiological and pathophysiological processes, including regulation of vascular function. ROCK signaling is thought to be a critical contributor to cardiovascular disease, including hypertension and effects of angiotensin II (Ang II). Two isoforms of ROCK (1 and 2) have been identified and are expressed in vascular cells. In this study, we examined the importance of ROCK2 in relation to vessel function using several models and a novel inhibitor of ROCK2. First, incubation of carotid arteries with the direct RhoA activator CN-03 or Ang II impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation by 40% to 50% ( P 〈0.05) without altering endothelium-independent relaxation. Both CN-03- and Ang II–induced endothelial dysfunction was prevented by Y-27632 (an inhibitor of both ROCK isoforms) or the selective ROCK2 inhibitor SLX-2119. In contrast, SLX-2119 had little effect on contraction of carotid arteries to receptor-mediated agonists (serotonin, phenylephrine, vasopressin, or U46619). Second, in basilar arteries, SLX-2119 inhibited constriction to Ang II by 90% without significantly affecting responses to serotonin or KCl. Third, in isolated pressurized brain parenchymal arterioles, SLX-2119 inhibited myogenic tone in a concentration-dependent manner (eg, 1 μmol/L SLX-2119 dilated by 79±4%). Finally, SLX-2119 dilated small pial arterioles in vivo, an effect that was augmented by inhibition of nitric oxide synthase. These findings suggest that ROCK2 has major, but heterogeneous, effects on function of endothelium and vascular muscle. The data support the concept that aberrant ROCK2 signaling may be a key contributor to select aspects of large and small vessel disease, including Ang II–induced endothelial dysfunction.
