    Notes: Abstract. The efficient management of clay soils depends on the rapid disposal of water following rainfall. Winter storm outfall hydrographs of under drained catchments ranging in size from 0.44 ha to 7.2 km2 are given, illustrating the drainage response of a Windsor Series soil. The response time of different sized catchments is discussed in relation to potential flood hazard arising from drainage improvements of agricultural land. Comparison is made with other soils to reveal broadly similar patterns of drainflow, with peak flow occurring typically between 1 and 4 hours after the mid-point of a storm. Despite large fluxes of water through the soil profile, the water content of the soil within the catchment of an individual tile lateral is shown to vary only by small amounts both during and after a single rainstorm and over a drainage season.

    Notes: The number of paired horizontal laminae in an ephemeral channel-fill increases systematically down-catchment from stream headwaters, and is shown to be functionally related to tributary confluence. Under moving storm conditions, each tributary sub-catchment delivers a sediment-laden discharge pulse that finds sedimentary expression in paired laminae of light and heavy minerals. Lamina differentiation is attributed to a congregational sorting mechanism. The direct relationship (r, = 0.903) between paired laminae and confluencing tributaries permits palaeoenvironmental inference of drainage-net character, and palaeoclimatic variability.

    Notes: A new sensor for the continuous and unmanned detection and recording of bedload motion is described. The sensor acts in the same fashion as a conventional metal detector but is elongate and installed permanently in the bed of an alluvial channel. Artificial clasts are labelled with short lengths of ferrite rod and are seeded upstream from the sensor, replacing bed particles. The entrainment of seeded clasts takes them over the sensor where they distort the magnetic field and produce a change in inductance that is detected and recorded. A field installation demonstrates the value of the sensor by revealing for the first time in coarse-grained alluvium the spasmodic nature of particle motion reminiscent of kinematic waves. It also illustrates the importance of pebble clusters in delaying particle entrainment.

    Notes: Particles projecting from the bed of an alluvial channel distort the fluid stream to produce a distinctive pressure field. This has considerable significance for both the entrapment and entrainment of other particles and is a primary cause of the widespread occurrence of pebble clusters and boulder shadows. Lift and drag forces are determined on clustered hemispherical particles of varying size. In the wake of an obstructing particle both forces are shown to vary directly with particle separation in a linear fashion. On the stoss side of the cluster, drag is uniform regardless of the separation of the component particles, but lift is shown to increase when particle separation is small, so affecting stability. This mutual interference of neighbouring clustered bed particles is a vital consideration of incipient motion and is shown by field evidence to cause a wide range in transport stage for particles of similar size and shape. On average, 46% of clustered particles are entrained by flood flow compared to 87% of particles in open plane-beds. The influence of clusters is a major determinant of sedimentary sorting.

    Notes: 1. The effects of isocapnic hypoxia on plasma renin activity (PRA) and angiotensin II (AH) concentration were studied in anaesthetized, artificially ventilated dogs. Regression analysis of plasma All concentration vs PRA, both measured by radio-immunoassay (RIA), was used as an index of converting enzyme activity in vivo.2. PaO2 decreased from 82 to 30 mmHg but regression analysis did not reveal any inhibition of All production within the limits of detection of this method (〈20% inhibition).3.     Notes: Geographic ranges and host plants of 10 species of Australian coreid, Gelonus tasmanicus, Acantholybas brunneus, Amorbus alternatus, Am. atomarius, Am. biguttatus, Am. bispinus, Am. obscuricornis, Am. rhombifer, Am. robustus and Am. rubiginosus, were summarized using data from specimen collection labels and sampling. One process (CLIMEX) and two correlative range-modelling programs (BIOCLIM and DOMAIN) were used to infer the bioclimatic profiles of each species. By inference from the maximum range predictions made by CLIMEX, the suggestion that G. tasmanicus, Am. atomarius and Am. obscuricornis are temperate species was supported. Similarly, the suggestions that Ac. brunneus was a subtropical species and Am. biguttatus and Am. rhombifer are predominantly tropical species were supported. That Am. alternatus, Am. robustus and Am. rubiginosus are apparently ubiquitous species was supported. Comparison of the bioclimatic profiles of the habitats of G. tasmanicus and Am. obscuricornis within Tasmania using BIOCLIM supported information available in the published literature, that is, that G. tasmanicus is better suited to sites at higher elevations than Am. obscuricornis. In addition, the suggestion that the regions of high Amorbus species endemism should overlap with regions of high eucalypt species endemism was also supported. This finding is taken as evidence that the evolutionary radiation of Amorbus has followed that of the eucalypts. Using these models we have obtained preliminary insights into the biology of each species and the environmental characteristics of their preferred climatic envelope. This is an achievement that might never have been attained through concentrated study given that these insects can vary from being rare to, at best, locally common in occurrence.

    Notes: Abstract: The use of white-rot fungi, especially Trametes versicolor and isolate IZU-154, to delignify and brighten kraft pulps is reviewed. The fungal treatments are effective but slow; the responsible enzymes are being studied with a view to accelerating the process. Manganese peroxidase, or laccase with a co-substrate, can demethylate and partially solubilize the lignin in pulps, mimicking the early steps of the fungal delignification.
