Notes: Abstract Selective oxidation reactions like the oxyfunctionalization of alkanes, hydroxylation of aromatics and sulfoxidation of thioethers have been carried out with dilute hydrogen peroxide over titanium and vanadium metallosilicate molecular sieves with MEL topology, viz., TS-2 and VS-2. Though both the catalysts possess similar activities, substantial differences in the product distribution are observed. The oxyfunctionalization of the primary carbon atoms of the alkanes and the oxidation of the methyl substituents of the aromatic hydrocarbons distinguish VS-2 from TS-2. Both the catalysts are found to be equally active in the hydroxylation of phenol, though they possess different activities in different solvents. In general, the oxidations are “deeper” over VS-2 than on TS-2.

Notes: Abstract Crystalline titanium containing silica analog of ZSM-48 (TS-48) samples were synthesized using soluble peroxytitanate, fumed silica and diamino octane. All samples were characterized using a variety of techniques including XRD, IR, AAS, SEM, UV-Vis, XANES and catalytic testing in hydroxylation of phenol. Data suggest that titanium in these materials is linked to the framework. However, it was impossible to incorporate more than about 2 wt% Ti in the zeolite lattice. TS-48 samples prepared by this method had no activity for hydroxylation of phenol in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The lack of activity of this material even though it showed all of the regular characteristics of other catalytically active titanium silicalites (i.e., TS-1 and TS-2) could be due either to diffusional limitations or to subtle differences in titanium environment.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of aniline using aqueous H2O2 and titanium silicates, TS-1 and TS-2 as catalysts was carried out in a batch reactor in the temperature range 333–353 K. TS-1 catalyzes aniline selectively to azoxybenzene and is superior to TS-2. The influence of different solvents, concentration of H2O2 and the catalyst in the reaction mixture on the conversion and product distribution has been studied. Acetonitrile is a suitable solvent in this reaction, while acetone is not. For the TS-1 catalyzed oxidation reaction,t-butyl hydroperoxide is not a suitable oxidant. At optimum conditions, a H2O2 efficiency of about 100% for aniline conversion is obtained with a selectivity of 97% to azoxybenzene in the product.

Notes: Abstract A new large pore tin-silicate analogue of zeolite ZSM-12 (MTW topology) with Si/Sn molar ratio 〉70 has been synthesized hydrothermally using a new template, hexamethylene bis(benzyl dimethyl ammonium hydroxide). This material exhibits an expansion in unit cell volume (XRD), an IR band at 970 cm−1 and a charge transfer band at 205 nm in the UV-Vis region indicating the presence of Si-O-Sn units with Sn4+ centers in Td configuration. Sn-ZSM-12 catalyzes the oxidation of phenol,m-cresol andm-xylene using dilute H2O2 as an oxidizing agent.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Abstract. Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumours of the lung are uncommon malignant neoplasms. They represent a heterogeneous spectrum of disease, encompassing the well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumours through to small-cell lung cancer, which has a poor prognosis and only palliative therapeutic options for most patients. Due to the low incidence of well-differentiated lung tumours there is as yet little experience. Methods: Clinical records of 14 patients with well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumours of the lung were assessed retrospectively for patients' initial symptomatology, diagnostic procedures, therapy and results. Results: Eight lobectomies, 2 bronchoplastic lobectomies, 2 segmental resections, 1 bilobectomy and 1 wedge resection were perfomed; seven of them without regional lymphadenectomy. All patients were alive after a mean follow-up of 38 (2–96) months. Thirteen of 14 patients were free of complaints, twelve had no recurrences and returned to work. Conclusions: Well-differentiated NET of the lung have an excellent prognosis after curative resection. Limited resections even without lymphadenectomy can be performed in some cases.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The coarctation of the aorta is a congenital narrowing of the aorta in the transitional area between the distal aortic arch and the proximal descending aorta. The coarctation causes an arterial hypertension of the upper half and an arterial hypotension of the lower half of the body. The indication for operative repair is given because of the hypertension with strain and possible insufficiency of the heart. The resection of the narrowed part of the aorta with end-to-end anastomosis or interposition of a prosthesis brings on the risk of a recoarctation. After a Vosschulte-aortoplasty a recurrent coarctation is rarely seen. This method, however, brings on a higher risk of the development of an aneurysm. In the following it is reported about a patient who underwent an operation due to an aneurysm 22 years after a Vosschulte-aortoplasty.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Affection of the cardiac valves in carcinoid disease are commen. This paper deals with the case history of a male patient, who suffered from tricuspid insufficiency and pulmonary stenosis by developing a "ldquo;carcinoid heart disease”. A brief review of literature suggests the importance of the first signs of right heart failure in the hemodynamic evaluation in the group of carcinoids. When cardiac valves are affected, a cardiosurgical approach should be supported, because of severe complications coming up from the carcinoid's own endocrine activity. When valve function is severely affected, the operation procedure can save the patients benefit, though the decision for biological or mechanical prothesis have to be fit on the individual outcome.
