    Description: Humans are rapidly changing the marine environment through a multitude of effects, including increased greenhouse gas emissions resulting in warmer and acidified oceans. Elevated CO2 conditions can cause sensory deficits and altered behaviours in marine organisms, either directly by affecting end organ sensitivity or due to likely alterations in brain chemistry. Previous studies show that auditory-associated behaviours of larval and juvenile fishes can be affected by elevated CO2 (1000 µatm). Here, using auditory evoked potentials (AEP) and micro-computer tomography (microCT) we show that raising juvenile snapper, Chrysophyrs auratus, under predicted future CO2 conditions resulted in significant changes to their hearing ability. Specifically, snapper raised under elevated CO2 conditions had a significant decrease in low frequency (less than 200 Hz) hearing sensitivity. MicroCT demonstrated that these elevated CO2 snapper had sacculus otolith's that were significantly larger and had fluctuating asymmetry, which likely explains the difference in hearing sensitivity. We suggest that elevated CO2 conditions have a dual effect on hearing, directly effecting the sensitivity of the hearing end organs and altering previously described hearing induced behaviours. This is the first time that predicted future CO2 conditions have been empirically linked through modification of auditory anatomy to changes in fish hearing ability. Given the widespread and well-documented impact of elevated CO2 on fish auditory anatomy, predictions of how fish life-history functions dependent on hearing may respond to climate change may need to be reassessed.

    Notes: A reduction of the Dirac–Maxwell equations in the case of static cylindrical symmetry is performed. The behavior of the resulting system of o.d.e.s. is examined analytically and numerical solutions presented. There are two classes of solutions. The first type of solution is a Dirac field surrounding a charged "wire.'' The Dirac field is highly localized, being concentrated in cylindrical shells about the wire. A comparison with the usual linearized theory demonstrates that this localization is entirely due to the nonlinearities in the equations which result from the inclusion of the "self-field.'' The second class of solutions have the electrostatic potential finite along the axis of symmetry but unbounded at large distances from the axis. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The full classical Dirac–Maxwell equations are considered in a somewhat novel form and under various simplifying assumptions. A reduction of the equations is performed in the case when the Dirac field is static. A further reduction of the equations is made under the assumption of spherical symmetry. These static spherically symmetric equations are examined in some detail and a numerical solution presented. Some surprising results emerge from this investigation: (i) Spherical symmetry necessitates the existence of a magnetic monopole. (ii) There exists a uniquely defined solution, determined only by the demand that the solution be analytic at infinity. (iii) The equations describe highly compact objects with an inner onion like shell structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that only for spins 1 and 2 (electronmagnetism and gravitation) does the generic integer spin, source-free, zero-rest-mass field generate an irreducible representation of the proper orthochronous Lorentz group,L+↑. The conclusion is then drawn that as these higher-spin fields can in no sense be considered as elementary we have strong mathematical (and physical) grounds for their (apparent) nonexistence in nature.
