    Notes: An inversion algorithm for interpreting electrical soundings based on a probabilistic treatment of the a priori information not only includes all the previous ones, but allows consideration of the constraints between the parameters. By introducing the a priori information, a unique solution among all the equivalent ones is obtained which is coherent with the geological background. Several examples dealing with the usual problems in the automatic interpretation of the electrical soundings illustrate the advantages of this algorithm. Good results are obtained with this method.

    Description: We present results of marine MT acquisition in the Alboran sea that also incorporates previously acquired land MT from southern Spain into our analysis. The marine data show complex MT response functions with strong distortion due to seafloor topography and the coastline, but inclusion of high resolution topography and bathymetry and a seismically defined sediment unit into a 3D inversion model has allowed us to image the structure in the underlying mantle. The resulting resistivity model is broadly consistent with a geodynamic scenario that includes subduction of an eastward trending plate beneath Gibraltar, which plunges nearly vertically beneath the Alboran. Our model contains three primary features of interest: a resistive body beneath the central Alboran, which extends to a depth of ~150 km. At this depth, the mantle resistivity decreases to values of ~100 Ohm-m, slightly higher than those seen in typical asthenosphere at the same depth. This transition suggests a change in slab properties with depth, perhaps reflecting a change in the nature of the seafloor subducted in the past. Two conductive features in our model suggest the presence of fluids released by the subducting slab or a small amount of partial melt in the upper mantle (or both). Of these, the one in the center of the Alboran basin, in the uppermost-mantle (20-30km depth) beneath Neogene volcanics and west of the termination of the Nekkor Fault, is consistent with geochemical models, which infer highly thinned lithosphere and shallow melting in order to explain the petrology of seafloor volcanics.

    Description: Over the last half decade the need for, and importance of, three-dimensional (3-D) modelling of magnetotelluric (MT) data have increased dramatically and various 3-D forward and inversion codes are in use and some have become commonly available. Comparison of forward responses and inversion results is an important step for code testing and validation prior to ‘production’ use. The various codes use different mathematical approximations to the problem (finite differences, finite elements or integral equations), various orientations of the coordinate system, different sign conventions for the time dependence and various inversion strategies. Additionally, the obtained results are dependent on data analysis, selection and correction as well as on the chosen mesh, inversion parameters and regularization adopted, and therefore, a careful and knowledge-based use of the codes is essential. In 2008 and 2011, during two workshops at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies over 40 people from academia (scientists and students) and industry from around the world met to discuss 3-D MT inversion. These workshops brought together a mix of code writers as well as code users to assess the current status of 3-D modelling, to compare the results of different codes, and to discuss and think about future improvements and new aims in 3-D modelling. To test the numerical forward solutions, two 3-D models were designed to compare the responses obtained by different codes and/or users. Furthermore, inversion results of these two data sets and two additional data sets obtained from unknown models (secret models) were also compared. In this manuscript the test models and data sets are described (supplementary files are available) and comparisons of the results are shown. Details regarding the used data, forward and inversion parameters as well as computational power are summarized for each case, and the main discussion points of the workshops are reviewed. In general, the responses obtained from the various forward models are comfortingly very similar, and discrepancies are mainly related to the adopted mesh. For the inversions, the results show how the inversion outcome is affected by distortion and the choice of errors, as well as by the completeness of the data set. We hope that these compilations will become useful not only for those that were involved in the workshops, but for the entire MT community and also the broader geoscience community who may be interested in the resolution offered by MT.

Abstract Gran Canaria, one of the two main islands of the Canary Archipelago off NW Africa, has been volcanically active for at least 15 million years. The island went through several volcanic cycles that varied greatly in composition and extrusive and intrusive activity. The complex orography of the island has excluded extensive land geophysical surveys on the island. A review of the available geophysical information on the island shows that it has been obtained mainly through marine and airborne geophysical surveys. A new dataset comprising 100 magnetotelluric soundings acquired on land has been used to obtain the first 3D electrical resistivity model of the island at crustal scale. The model shows high resistivity values close to the surface in the exposed Tejeda Caldera that extends at depth to the SE cutting the islands in half. Outside the inferred limits of the Tejeda Caldera the 3D model shows low resistivity values that could be explained by hydrothermal alteration at deeper levels and the presence of marine saltwater intrusion at shallower levels near the coast. The presence of unconnected vertical-like structures, with very low resistivity (〈10 ohm m) could be associated to small convective cells is confirmed by the sensitivity analysis carried out in the present study. Those structures are the most likely candidates for a detailed analysis in order to determine their geothermal economic potential. A comprehensive review of existing geophysical data and models of Gran Canaria island and their comparison with the new 3D electrical resistivity model is presented.

    Description: A new methodology to estimate magnetotelluric (MT) tensor relationships, called Estimation of Local transfer-functIons by Combining Interstation Transfer-functions (ELICIT), is proposed whereby the MT tensor relationships of the local site are derived using only interstation transfer functions. The MT impedance tensor and the geomagnetic transfer function at the local site are characterised by combining interstation tensor relationships between electric and magnetic fields at the local site with the horizontal magnetic fields acquired at a neighbouring site. The main property of the proposed method is that the employed interstation transfer functions are independently constrained, without the need to acquire the electric and the magnetic fields at the local site simultaneously to recover the local MT tensor relationships. Due to this property, the ELICIT method offers new possibilities for MT data acquisition and processing, providing significant improvements when the magnetic time-series at the local site are affected by local noise or are truncated. Error analysis shows that, even when magnetic fields are truncated, the quality of the results obtained following the ELICIT method are similar to those we would obtain if the magnetic fields had not been truncated. Another important property is that different neighbouring sites can be used to recover the tensor relationships at the local site. Averaging of results obtained using different neighbouring sites can be performed to improve the statistics. For our example data, when the ELICIT method is used to improve the statistics, errors of the estimates for periods between 1000 and 20 000 s periodicities are clearly reduced. All interstation transfer functions are calculated doing remote reference and the bootstrap method is used to compute the errors, when necessary. Long period magnetotelluric data acquired in the Pyrenees and in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and magnetic data provided by Fürstenfeldbruck magnetic observatory have been used to test the proposed ELICIT method, with positive results. Due to the lack of requirement that the electric and the magnetic fields of the local site be acquired simultaneously, the proposed method also offers new possibilities for MT data acquisition, optimizing the available instrumentation.

    Description: Critical infrastructures on which society depends are affected by what are known as geomagnetically induced currents. As a consequence of Faraday's law of induction, which is associated with time variations of the magnetic field, an electromotive force is induced in the conductive earth. The (geo)electric field generated in this way acts as a voltage source through the power transmission networks, so that the induced currents during large geomagnetic storms can damage the transformers where the circuit is grounded. Many countries, such as Spain, have undertaken studies aimed at assessing the vulnerability of their power grids to the danger posed by this phenomenon, but one question that remained open was whether the grids that transmit power across their islands deserve attention. We have constructed models for the grids in each of the individual systems and used resistivity models of the lithosphere for each group of islands, from which we have calculated the surface impedances. The respective models of electrical admittances of the grids have been combined with the geoelectric field derived from the convolution of the recorded (or expected in an extreme scenario) geomagnetic storms and the impedances calculated from the geoelectrical models to derive the expected GICs in the power lines, substations, and transformers. The results of our study show that the vulnerability of the Canary Islands is very low, while that of the Balearic Islands is not negligible.
