    Notes: The growth and initial characterization of a new II-VI-based diluted magnetic semiconductor compound that incorporates a rare-earth element, Zn1−xEuxSe, is reported. The samples were grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs(001) substrates using elemental source ovens. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction confirms single-crystal growth with an in-plane symmetry like that of the GaAs substrate, although the crystalline quality deteriorates with increasing epilayer thickness. Growth on a ZnSe buffer layer substantially improves the crystalline quality, suggesting that the lattice constant of the Zn1−xEuxSe is larger than that of GaAs. This is confirmed by x-ray θ−2θ scans, which further show that the epilayers grow in a (001) orientation and retain the zinc-blende structure of the host lattice. Eu is expected to substitute for Zn as Eu2+ (4f7, 8S7/2 free ion) with an 8A1 ground state, an orbital singlet with a spin S=7/2. Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry data (2–150 K, 0–5 T) exhibit the temperature and field dependence characteristic of Brillouin paramagnetic behavior, consistent with substitutional incorporation.

    Notes: As an acceptor dopant with a solid:liquid distribution coefficient ks〈1, iron is an example of an impurity which can be used in modest amounts to ensure that an adequate fraction of EL2 midgap defects are ionized along the length of a melt-grown GaAs crystal, as desired for semi-insulating behavior. The results of such deliberate doping with iron (when NFe is in the mid-1015 cm−3 range) are reported for crystals grown by both the liquid encapsulated Czochralski and the vertical gradient freeze methods. Except in the very tail region of such crystals (when NFe(approximately-greater-than)NEL2 and high resistivity p-type behavior results), GaAs with this modest iron modification to the compensation balance behaves with quite ordinary semi-insulating properties. The iron acceptors are then all ionized, and are optically "invisible.''

    Notes: We report time-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy results for the thermal desorption of CO physisorbed onto Ag(011). The measurements were performed isothermally and effectively at constant coverage. We observe that the logarithm of the measured pseudo-first-order desorption rate constant increases approximately linearly with coverage over the temperature and coverage ranges accessible to our measurements. The results are analyzed in terms of a quasiequilibrium model in which the desorption rate constant is expressed analytically as a virial expansion. Using this analysis, we determine that at low coverage the molecules adsorb with their axes parallel to the surface plane and are oriented with respect to the crystalline axes. We find that long-range interactions extending out to 7–8 neighbor shells must be included to fit our results. The magnitude of these long-range interactions is reasonably well described by the gas phase intermolecular potential if screening by substrate image charges is included.

    Notes: We present time-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) results for the desorption of submonolayer coverages of H2O and D2O from Ag(011). The measurements were performed isothermally and effectively at constant coverage. At coverages above a few percent of a monolayer, we observe that the desorption is characterized by zero-order kinetics. That is, the desorption rate is independent of coverage. We hypothesize that this results from the formation of two-dimensional water islands on the surface at all coverages and temperatures measured. The desorption process is governed in part by the dissociation of water from the edges of these islands. Rapid diffusion on the surface maintains a quasiequilibrium between the molecules bound to islands and isolated adsorbed water molecules, thereby leading to pseudo-zero-order kinetics. This result is interpreted upon general thermodynamic grounds, and also using a simple kinetic model which leads to pseudo-zero-order desorption kinetics. An unusual hydrogen kinetic isotope effect is reported which lends support to our interpretation.

The measurements were performed isothermally and effectively at constant coverage. We present an analysis based on a quasiequilibrium model that expresses the pseudo-first-order desorption rate constant in terms of a virial expansion. The results of this analysis demonstrate the existence of small, long-range attractive interactions as well as the expected short-range repulsive interactions between adsorbed molecules. The interplay between these two types of interactions leads to a kinetic compensation effect that can be easily understood in terms of vanishing virial coefficients. Thus, in these simple systems, the origin of the kinetic compensation effect lies in the statistical thermodynamics of the adsorbed phase, while the dynamical events associated with the desorption event apparently play a lesser role. The relationship of this analysis technique to others is investigated, and its generality is emphasized.

    Notes: A new high-resolution electron energy-loss spectrometer based on the dispersion compensation (DC) concept has been designed, built, and tested. The parallel processing inherent in DC has allowed us to attain signal levels two orders of magnitude in excess of conventional designs while operating at comparable resolution. This is consistent with expectations based on simple model calculations. The resolving power of the spectrometer is not as good as theoretically predicted probably due to uncontrolled beam angle effects. Initial tests on a variety of systems are presented. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the design and suggest future improvements.

    Notes: H. pylori infection is a major risk factor in gastric cancer development. The availability of cDNA microarrays creates the unprecedented opportunity to examine simultaneously dynamic changes of multiple pathways affected by H. pylori infection.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:In this study we examined broad patterns of gene expression induced by H. pylori in the gastric cancer cell line 1739-CRL AGS cells in culture using the U95A microarray.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods: H. pylori were cocultured with AGS cells for 4, 12, 24 and 48 h. Total RNA was extracted and after labelling was used for detection of genes represented in the human U95A microarray set. Data analyses were performed using GeneChip and CLUSFAVOR software.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Nearly 6000 genes present in the array were expressed by AGS cells. We report approximately 200 genes that showed the most marked changes. Our studies confirm the up-regulation of c-jun, jun-B, c-fos and cyclin D1 by H. pylori. We report for the first time the induction of the serine threonine kinase pim-1 and ATF3 by H. pylori infection of AGS cells.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:In this microarray analysis of gene expression induced by H. pylori in gastric epithelial cells, we identified a large number of unsuspected genes affected by H. pylori. Further, we show that unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis can provide useful insight into the possible contribution of genes in specific pathways, based on their profile of expression.
