    Notes: Polymeric rods incorporating the laser dye Rhodamine 6G in a copolymer of hydroxypropyl acrylate and methylmethacrylate have been shown to lase under flashlamp excitation. The rods exhibit high bulk transmission levels, coupled with positive lensing characteristics, that have enabled output energies up to 354 mJ/pulse with a 0.14% energy efficiency to be demonstrated in a preliminary study.

    Notes: Solid-state rods containing the laser dye pyrromethene 597 (Pyr 597) in a modified polymethyl methacrylate polymer host have been fabricated and shown to give significant lasing action under flashlamp excitation. The rods all displayed a favorable positive-lensing characteristic and also exhibited low bulk transmission losses. The rod with the lowest transmission loss, measured to be 0.31% cm−1 at 633 nm, gave a laser output of 880 mJ with a 0.35% energy efficiency.

    Notes: We have developed a microscope to image weak magnetic fields using submillimeter pickup coils made from conventional low-temperature superconducting niobium wire coupled to the input circuit of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The pickup coil and the SQUID sensor are mounted in the vacuum space of the cryostat and are thermally anchored to the liquid helium reservoir. A 25 μm thick sapphire window separates the room temperature (RT) sample and the vacuum space. The spacing between the pickup coil and RT sample was typically less than 130 μm. The spatial resolution is limited by the diameter of the pickup coil. The pickup coils are easily interchangeable, allowing us to adapt the SQUID microscope to a variety of different measurements. We have achieved a spatial resolution of 250 μm with a magnetic field sensitivity of 850 fT/Hz1/2 or a spatial resolution of 500 μm with a magnetic field sensitivity of 330 fT/Hz1/2. We have used this instrument to measure various biomagnetic and paleomagnetic fields. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The influence of different light regimes on the germination of Australian and English populations of Phalaris paradoxa L. (awned canary-grass) seed was investigated to determine the impact of changing tillage practices on weed infestation. Seeds of all biotypes were highly viable, but differed in levels of innate dormancy (26–99%). In one experiment seed from a single Australian biotype, either enclosed in the spikelet glumes or having the spikelet glumes removed, were exposed to nine light treatments. Germination was stimulated by red and white light, but was inhibited by far-red light. Time to 50% germination was less for seed enclosed in the spikelet glumes than for naked caryopses, although the final percentage of seed germinating when still enclosed in the spikelet glumes was significantly lower than for naked caryopses. In another experiment, six Australian and English biotypes with varying dormancy characteristics were exposed to eight light treatments. Red light did not stimulate germination in the deeply dormant biotype, however stimulated all other biotypes. Germination in darkness was below 20% in all biotypes except for one where germination was 51%. To overcome dormancy seeds were imbibed and placed in darkness at 16°C for either 7 or 14 days prior to exposure to red or white light for a single 15-min period. Dormancy in all biotypes was overcome indicating that a period of burial may decrease the dormancy level and increase seed sensitivity to light. This increased light sensitivity suggests that exposure to light during tillage may stimulate germination in P. paradoxa seed.

    Notes: Seven field experiments in spring wheat and barley with natural infestations ot A. fatua were set up to investigate the effects on grain yield of removing the weeds by hand at intervals during early growth stages. Only three sites showed any significant yield reductions and these all had populations of wild oats of 150 stems or more per m2 at harvest. No significant yield reductions occurred at lesser densities (20–100/m2). At the three higher-density sites, competitive effects did not start until the crop had four leaves, about 4–5 weeks after it had emerged. A further experiment in a glasshouse designed to test if competition occurred prior to the emergence of crop and weed indicated no effect at all during this period. In den drei Versuchen mit den höheren Dichten setzte die Konkurrenz nicht ein bevor das Getreide im 4-Blattstadium war; das waren etwa 4–5 Wochen nach dem Aufiaufen. Es wurde ein weiterer Versuch im Gewächshaus angelegt, um festzustellen, ob die Konkurrenz vor dem Auflaufen des Ge-treides und des Unkrauts eintrat. Während dieser Periode war kein Einfluss festzustellen.

    Notes: A. fauta reduced yields of spring barley in the majority of 51 experiments carried out during 1971 and 1972. Infestations ranging from 8 to 662 seedlings/m2 in the spring resulted in yield reductions varying from nothing to 72%; in 11 experiments these exceeded 1–2 t/ha. Reductions in yield were poorly correlated with numbers of seedlings, panicles or wild oat seeds produced. However, there was a good correlation between yield loss and the dry weight of wild oats at harvest.Growth and competitive effects of wild oats differed between the two years. Grain losses were due mainly to reductions in the numbers of ear bearing barley tillers. The influence and significance of the effect of competition on the size of barley grains is discussed.

    Notes: Two experiments were carried out, one in 1995 and one in 1997, to investigate the competitive abilities of two spring wheat cultivars with Sinapis arvensis L. The spring wheat cultivars (Baldus and Canon) of contrasting growth habit were grown with and without S. arvensis under two different moisture regimes (10% and 70% of field capacity). In 1995, S. arvensis was found to be less competitive when subjected to moisture stress, resulting in smaller wheat yield losses in dry soil than in moist soil. In both years, seed production of S. arvensis was reduced by competition and moisture stress, and the seeds produced by plants that had been grown in drier soil were small and had negligible dormancy. Hence, in dry conditions, the competitiveness of S. arvensis and its potential to produce persistent seed may be reduced. Some differences between the two wheat cultivars were evident: cv. Baldus was more competitive against S. arvensis than cv. Canon. This could be attributed to differences in canopy structure.
