    Notes: This article reports on ultraviolet reflection–absorption spectroscopy of C6H6 molecules physisorbed on Ag, Cu, and Au surfaces. The electronic 1A1g→1B2u transition of C6H6 at wavelengths near 250 nm is observed. We model the system and obtain center frequencies, linewidths, and estimates of the oscillator strengths for the various vibronic absorptions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Nitrogen ions were implanted into ZnSxSe1−x epilayers grown on p-GaAs (100) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Dopant activation and annealing out the implant damage were achieved by a postannealing process in a N2 ambient. Schottky structures employing the implanted p-type ZnSxSe1−x were fabricated and device efficacy was examined by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, current–voltage (I–V), current–voltage temperature (I–V–T), and high frequency capacitance–voltage (C–V) measurements. PL spectra showed a clear donor–acceptor pair (DAP) recombination at an energy of 2.735 and 2.72 eV, in both MBE and MOCVD ZnSSe epilayers, respectively, regardless of the postannealing temperatures. The diode conduction in forward bias proceeds by the combination of thermionic and tunneling emission. C–V measurement proved the maximum doping concentration to be around 1017 cm−3 after ion implantation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The epitaxial growth of the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) Zn1−xFexSe (0〈x≤0.22) by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) is reported. The films were grown on (100) GaAs substrates in a vertical stagnation flow reactor with a specially designed inlet to minimize prereactions between the groups II and VI precursors. The precursors used in this study were (CH3)2Zn:N(CH2H5)3, Fe(CO)5, and H2Se diluted in H2 carrier gas. The epilayers were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, absorption, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Typical growth rates were from 3–4 μm/h, which are significantly higher than those obtained by molecular beam epitaxy. Thus, in addition to the growth of DMS multilayer structures, MOVPE appears to be very promising for efficient growth of thick DMS films for Faraday magneto-optical applications. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the absolute column densities of gas phase C6H6 and upper limits on absolute C4H2 and C2H3 concentrations in a hot filament diamond chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor. The steady state density of C6H6 is monitored as a function of C2H2 and H2 input fractions. The C6H6 column density is a quadratic function of input C2H2 fraction at low C2H2 fractions. Above a critical C2H2 input fraction, the C6H6 column density becomes independent of C2H2 input fraction. The column density of gas phase C6H6 is relatively insensitive to the input H2 fraction. The weak relationship between C6H6 and H2 input fraction is in contradiction to the conclusion drawn from chemical kinetics modeling of diamond CVD that H2 strongly suppresses the formation of aromatic species under diamond CVD conditions. Moreover, comparison of C6H6 column densities with previously measured CH3 column densities under similar conditions indicate that a comparable fraction of gas phase carbon atoms in the steady state are incorporated in C6H6 as are incorporated in the growth species CH3. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract 1. Two pairs of neurons in the pyloric network of the spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus, communicate through mixed graded chemical and rectifying electrical synapses. The anterior burster (AB) chemically inhibits and is electrically coupled to the ventricular dilator (VD); the lateral pyloric (LP) and pyloric (PY) neurons show reciprocal chemical inhibition and electrical coupling. We examined the effects of dopamine (DA), serotonin (5HT) and octopamine (Oct) on these mixed synapses to determine the plasticity possible with opposing modes of synaptic interaction. 2. Dopamine increased net inhibition at all three pyloric mixed synapses by both reducing electrical coupling and increasing chemical inhibition. This reversed the sign of the net synaptic interaction when electrotonic coupling dominated some mixed synapses, and activated silent chemical components of other mixed synapses. 3. Serofonin weakly enhanced LP → PY net inhibition, by reducing electrical coupling without altering chemical inhibition. Serotonin reduced AB→ VD electrical coupling, but variability in its effect on the chemical component made the net effect non-significant. 4. Octopamine enhanced LP→ PY and PY→ LP net inhibition by enhancing the chemical inhibitory component without altering electrical coupling. 5. Differential modulation of chemical and electrical components of mixed synapses markedly changes the net synaptic interactions. This contributes to the flexible outputs that modulators evoke from anatomically defined neural networks.

The neurons of the pyloric network of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion organize their rhythmic motor output using both chemical and electrical synapses. The 6 electrical synapses within this network help set the firing phases of the pyloric neurons during each rhythmic cycle. We examined the modulatory effects of the amines dopamine (DA), serotonin (5HT) and octopamine (Oct) on coupling at all the electrical synapses of the pyloric network. 2. Electrical coupling within the pacemaker group [anterior burster (AB) to pyloric dilator (PD), and PD- 3. Dopamine decreased or increased the coupling strength of all the pyloric electrical synapses: the sign of the effect depended upon which neuron was the target of current injection. For example, DA decreased AB→ PD coupling (i.e., when current was injected into the AB) but increased coupling in the other direction, PD→ AB. Dopamine decreased AB to VD coupling when current was injected into either neuron. Serotonin also had mixed effects; it enhanced PD→AB coupling but decreased AB to VD and PD to VD coupling in both directions. Octopamine's only effect was to reduce PD→ VD coupling. li]4. 5. The characteristic modulation of electrical coupling by each amine may contribute to the unique motor pattern that DA, 5HT and Oct each elicit from the pyloric motor network.

    Notes: Summary Zooplankton was sampled with RMT (1+8) gear on a synoptic grid of stations centred on South Georgia during the austral summer (November/December 1981) and winter (July/August 1983). This initial paper compares zooplankton biomass, vertical distribution and species composition from RMT 1 catches in the oceanic portion of the grid (water depth greater than 2000 m) during the two surveys. In the winter survey, mean zooplankton biomass within the top 1000 m of the water column was 68% of its summer level. This drop was largely due to a decrease in abundance of krill (Euphausia superba), although biomass of copepods and remaining zooplankton also decreased. Copepods averaged 48% of total biomass in summer and winter, but outnumbered all other taxa put together by a factor of 10. Antarctic epipelagic species predominated around the island in the summer survey but tended to be replaced by sub-Antarctic or cosmopolitan species during the winter survey. The majority of zooplankton also showed a downwards seasonal migration out of the top 250 m layer in winter. However, several epipelagic species, including E. superba, did not migrate, and these tended to have the largest summer-winter differences in overall abundance. These trends were attributed to variation in the position of the Polar Front, which lay north of the island during the summer survey but lay across the survey area in winter, resulting in a greater influence of sub-Antarctic water and the displacement of Antarctic species.
