    Notes: Summary The changes in circulation patterns over Eurasia during break monsoon condition over India are studied in comparison to the active monsoon condition. Break monsoon condition seems to set in over the India Sub-Continent in association with eastward movement of middle latitude westerly trough at 500 mb, having large amplitude extending into west Pakistan and northern India. Simultaneously the subtropical anticyclonic ridge over Arabia protrudes into central and Peninsular India. The high latitude blocking high over East Siberia retrogrades and the East Asiatic trough deepens and moves eastwards. The west Pacific subtropical ridge recedes eastward from the China continent. During this period the monsoon trough shifts, from its normal position over Gangetic plains, northwards to the foot of the Himalayas and the monsoon westerlies in the lower troposphere extends right upto the rim of the Tibetan Plateau. The sub-tropical ridge line in the upper troposphere shifts northwards during break and lies approximately above the lower monsoon trough. This seems to provide an effective process of removing ascending air in the lower monsoon trough causing exceptionally heavy rainfall over Assam and along the foot of the Himalayas.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es werden klimatologische Beurteilungen der Werte des Stabilitätsparameters für verschiedene Druckschichten über Afrika in den Monaten Januar, April, Juli und Oktober vorgelegt. Diese Werte zeigen sehr kleine Änderungen in isobaren Schichten. In der Vertikalen ändern sich die Stabilitätswerte sehr rasch, so daß die Werte für die 850–700 mb-Schicht in allen vier Monaten ungefähr um drei Größenordnungen kleiner sind als die für die 50 mb-Schicht.
    Notes: Summary Climatological estimates for the values of static stability parameter are presented for the different pressure layers in the African atmosphere during the months of January, April, July and October. These values show very small variations on isobaric layers. In the vertical, the static stability values change rather rapidly so that the values for the 850–700 mb layer are, in all the four months, about three orders of magnitude less than those for the 50-30 mb layer.

    Notes: Summary A statistical study of the reported height variations of the tropopause over Indian latitudes has been taken up in the present investigation. The analysis show two types of tropopause (1) the tropical tropopause, and (2) the extratropical tropopause. The latitudinal movement of the extratropical tropopause and the height variation of tropical tropopause with seasons are examined. The tropical tropopause near equatorial latitudes shows a lowering of the height during monsoon months (summer months) contrary to the normal expected structure. The characteristics of this equatorial tropopause are examined in relation to meteorological parameters of the troposphere and stratosphere.

    Notes: Summary The frequency of occurrence of the polar and tropical tropopause at different stations in India in different months is studied. The seasonal and latitudinal height variations of the tropical tropopause are examined. A break in the tropical tropopause just at the latitude of the easterly jet stream is suggested. The lower southern tropopause is called the monsoon tropopause. A few comments on the possible characteristics of the monsoon tropopause are given.
