    Notes: Laminates containing a thin layer (5 to 200 µm thick) sandwiched between two thick layers (2 mm thick) were fabricated by sequential slip casting in order to study crack bifurcation. The thin layer was formed with a mixture of a pure ZrO2 powder (MZ) and a Zr(Y)O2 powder containing 3 mol% Y2O3 (TZ). The thick layers were formed with TZ powder containing 0.05 volume fraction of Al2O3 powder to distinguish the interfaces between the different layers in the scanning electron microscope. Dilatometry data for monolithic specimens formed with the mixed MZ and TZ powders (0.30 to 1.00 volume fraction MZ) showed that the monoclinic-to-tetragonal transformation temperature and strain varied with the MZ content, suggesting the yttria in the TZ powder diffused into the MZ powder during processing at 1500°C/2 h. These data also showed that large compressive stresses developed in the thin layer due to the transformation. Conditions (thin layer composition and thickness) for observing edge cracks produced along the center line of the thin layer and for observing crack bifurcation during flexural failure were determined. Delamination occurred during cooling for layers fabricated with greaterthan equal to0.40 volume fraction of the MZ powder when the thin layers were 200 µm thick. Edge cracking, which occurred during cooling, and crack bifurcation, which occurred during flexural loading, occurred for thin layer compositions containing greaterthan equal to0.40 volume fraction MZ powder, when the thickness of the thin layer was between similar/congruent50 and 150 µm. Crack bifurcation was not observed in thinner layers. With decreasing layer thickness, thin layers fabricated with 〉0.60 volume fraction of the MZ powder contained multiple microcracks, parallel to the center line, on the surface, instead of a single edge crack. The flexural strength of all specimens depended on the strength of the thicker Zr(Y)O2 layers, regardless of whether bifurcation occurred.

    Notes: We investigated the carrier and light trapping in GaInAs/AlGaAs single-quantum-well laser structures by means of time-resolved photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of the shape and depth of the confinement potential and of the cavity geometry was studied by using different AlGaAs/GaAs short-period superlattices as barriers. Our results show that grading the optical cavity improves considerably both carrier and light trapping in the quantum well, and that the trapping efficiency is enhanced by increasing the graded confining potential. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We evaluated the clinical characteristics found in 21 children who showed allergic reactions upon incidental inhalation offish odors or fumes, from 197 diagnosed with IgE-mediated fish hypersensitivity. Allergic reactions to fish via ingestion began in most patients (86%) within the first 24 months of life. The vast majority (19/21) of patients showed cutaneous symptoms, either alone or, less frequently, associated with other clinical manifestations. Hake and flounder were the species offish most frequently implicated in eliciting clinical manifestations upon ingestion. After diagnosis, all these patients were placed on a strict fish-avoidance diet. During this period of avoidance, patients reported allergic reactions (mean age 7 years) after incidental exposure to airborne fish odors or fumes. Clinical manifestations through inhalation were respiratory (mainly wheezing) in 12 patients and cutaneous (mainly urticaria) in nine patients. Nineteen of 21 patients reported three or more episodes upon exposure to fish aerosols; in most cases, these episodes occurred at home when other people were eating fish. In conclusion, incidental inhalation of fish odors or fumes could play an important role in accidental and unknown encounters with fish in children on fish-avoidance diets for fish IgE-mediated hypersensitivity. Such exposures could elicit clinical symptoms and could have some effect in delaying the development of tolerance.

    Notes: Background: Thiomucase® is a mucopolysaccharidase obtained from ovine tissues mainly used to facilitate the diffusion of local anaesthetics and in the treatment of cellulitis. A patient with an anaphylaxis in relation to the intramuscular administration of Thiomucase® is reported. Objective: To investigate Thiomucase® allergens and their possible relationship with dander allergens and animal albumins. Material and methods: Skin prick tests (SPT) and serum-specific IgE were performed with Thiomucase® and danders. Thiomucase® SDS-PAGE immunoblotting was performed in order to study allergens. RAST/CAP inhibition and SDS-PAGE immunoblotting inhibition were carried out to study the cross-reactivity. Results: Skin prick tests (SPT) were positive to Thiomucase®, animal dander (cat, dog, sheep, other), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and echinococcus. Specific IgE was also positive to Thiomucase®, animal dander (cat, dog, sheep, other), BSA and echinococcus. In the RAST-CAP inhibition assays BSA was nearly completely inhibited by Thiomucase®, Thiomucase® was partially inhibited by BSA and cat and Echinococcus granulosus was partially inhibited by sheep and Thiomucase®. In the Thiomucase® SDS-PAGE immunoblotting several proteins fixed IgE, ranging from 20 kDa to 〉 94 kDa, the strongest with 43 kDa. The IgE fixation to BSA, cat and sheep in the SDS-PAGE immunoblotting was completely inhibited by the preincubation of the serum with Thiomucase®. Conclusions: An IgE-mediated anaphylaxis to Thiomucase® is documented. Multiple allergens are recognized in Thiomucase® by the patient serum, the main with 43 kDa. Partial cross-reactivity with BSA, cat dander and sheep dander is documented.

    Notes: The presence of IgE antibodies to the allergens rBet v 1 and rBet v 2 was investigated in patients with known sensitization to ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and/or olive (Olea europaea) pollen, by comparing a group of 10 patients who had allergic symptoms after ingestion of fruits (A) with a group of 17 patients who had only seasonal respiratory symptoms (B). There was no significant difference between the two groups for total IgE. All patients showed specific IgE to both L. perenne and O. europaea. No specific IgE binding to rBet v 1 was detected in any patient. The incidence of the presence of IgE antibodies to rBet v 2 was 90% in the group with fruit allergy (A) and 35% in group B. We found a significant association between presence of IgE antibodies to rBet v 2 and fruit allergy (P=0.007). Specific IgE values to O. europaea pollen were higher in the fruit-allergy group than the group without fruit allergy (P=〈.032), In conclusion, pollen-allergic patients with specific IgE to birch pollen profilin show a significantly elevated frequency of fruit allergy.

    Notes: Anchovy semipreserves are elaborated in Mediterranean countries with ripened Engraulis encrasicolus obtained by a traditional process. In order to identify those sensory attributes that are most useful as indicators of the ripening stage of Engraulis encrasicolus we performed sensory analyses of anchovy samples obtained at intervals throughout the ripening process. The resulting 90 × 44 sample-by-attribute matrix was analyzed by principal components analysis, leading to the selection of 11 attributes that are reliable indicators of ripening stage and spoilage. The attributes chosen were gray color of the external side; red color of the external side, internal side and backbone mark; the odors Iberian ham and fish meal; the flavors anchovy and bitter; and the texture attributes firmness and juiciness.

    Notes: We evaluated the prevalence and characteristics of the principal foods implicated in 355 children diagnosed with IgE-mediated food allergy. Diagnosis was established on the basis of positive clinical history for the offending food, positive specific IgE by skin prick test and RAST, and open food challenge. Our results showed the principal foods involved in allergic reactions are: eggs, fish, and cow's milk. These are followed in frequency by fruits (peaches, hazelnuts and walnuts), legumes (lentils, peanuts and chick peas) and other vegetables (mainly sunflower seeds). The legumes demonstrated the highest degree of clinical cross-reactivity. Most patients with food allergy reacted to one or two foods (86.7%). Only 13.3% of patients reacted to 3 or more foods, mostly to legumes and fruits. We found that food allergy begins most frequently in the first (48.8%) and second (20.4%) years of life. Allergy to proteins of cow's milk, egg, and fish begins predominantly before the second year, demonstrating a clear relationship with the introduction of these foods into the child's diet. Allergy to foods of vegetable origin (fruits, legumes and other vegetables) begins predominantly after the second year.;

    Notes: The prevalence of vegetable sensitization in children with pollinosis (Group A; n = 48) and the prevalence of pollen sensitization in children with fruit or vegetable allergy (Group B; n = 42) were studied by means of prick-test and determination of serum specific IgE to several pollens, fruits and vegetables. Fifteen patients from Group A (31%) showed sensitivity to fruits and/or vegetables, but only three of them had any symptoms after ingestions. Twenty nine patients from Group B (69%) showed pollen sensitization, mainly to grass and Compositae pollen. An association was found between sensitivity to Compositae pollen and sensitivity to several fruits and vegetables (Compositae, Fagaceae, Brassica, Betulaceae and Leguminoseae.)
