    Description: Greenland's bed topography is a primary control on ice flow, grounding line migration, calving dynamics and subglacial drainage. Moreover, fjord bathymetry regulates the penetration of warm Atlantic Water (AW) that rapidly melts and undercuts Greenland's marine-terminating glaciers. Here, we present a new compilation of Greenland bed topography that assimilates seafloor bathymetry and ice thickness data through a mass conservation (MC) approach. A new 150-m horizontal resolution bed topography/bathymetric map of Greenland is constructed with seamless transitions at the ice/ocean interface, yielding major improvements over previous datasets, particularly in the marine-terminating sectors of northwest and southeast Greenland. Our map reveals the total sea level potential of the Greenland Ice Sheet is 7.42±0.05 m, which is 7 cm greater than previous estimates. Furthermore, it explains recent calving front response of numerous outlet glaciers and reveals new pathways by which AW can access glaciers with marine-based basins, thereby highlighting sectors of Greenland that are most vulnerable to future oceanic forcing.

    Description: We present a new bed elevation dataset for Greenland derived from a combination of multiple airborne ice thickness surveys undertaken between the 1970s and 2012. Around 420 000 line kilometres of airborne data were used, with roughly 70 % of this having been collected since the year 2000, when the last comprehensive compilation was un- dertaken. The airborne data were combined with satellite- derived elevations for non-glaciated terrain to produce a con- sistent bed digital elevation model (DEM) over the entire is- land including across the glaciated–ice free boundary. The DEM was extended to the continental margin with the aid of bathymetric data, primarily from a compilation for the Arc- tic. Ice thickness was determined where an ice shelf exists from a combination of surface elevation and radar soundings. The across-track spacing between flight lines warranted in- terpolation at 1 km postings for significant sectors of the ice sheet. Grids of ice surface elevation, error estimates for the DEM, ice thickness and data sampling density were also pro- duced alongside a mask of land/ocean/grounded ice/floating ice. Errors in bed elevation range from a minimum of ±10 m to about ±300 m, as a function of distance from an obser- vation and local topographic variability. A comparison with the compilation published in 2001 highlights the improve- ment in resolution afforded by the new datasets, particularly along the ice sheet margin, where ice velocity is highest and changes in ice dynamics most marked. We estimate that the volume of ice included in our land-ice mask would raise mean sea level by 7.36 m, excluding any solid earth effects that would take place during ice sheet decay.

    Notes: As-deposited superconducting thin films of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ are grown using, for the first time, a Nd:YAG laser (λ=1.06 μm) at substrate temperatures (approximately-equal-to)450–500 °C in the presence of dc plasma of O2 on SrTiO3 substrates (100 orientation). We find that the conventional ring electrode geometry used by others does not have the desired effect with Nd:YAG lasers. We use a simple disc electrode to generate O2 plasma.

    Notes: A noncontacting technique has been developed to measure the thickness of thin metal sheet by using a pulsed laser to generate both symmetric and antisymmetric Lamb waves. These have been detected with a laser interferometer. Analysis of the waveforms allows an estimation of the sheet thickness and accuracies to within 2% are attainable on sheets as thin as 27 μm.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of the longitudinal ultrasonic velocity in iron and Dural has been obtained using a totally remote laser technique. The ultrasound is generated by irradiation of one face of a sample with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser pulse and is detected on the opposite face using a modified Michelson laser interferometer. The system has proved capable of measurements up to temperatures in excess of 1000 °C, with an absolute accuracy in velocity of ±1%, and relative accuracies of better than 0.1%. Anomalies in the data for iron have been discerned at the Curie temperature of ∼768 °C, due to the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic phase transition, and at 910 °C due to the crystallographic phase transition from ferrite to austenite.

    Notes: We have carried out ultrasonic and neutron studies of a range of single-crystal Gd1−x Scx random alloys (x=0.25, 0.28, 0.295, 0.31, 0.32, 0.36) in the vicinity of the multicritical point at x=0.29. The sample richest in Gd shows magnetic behavior similar to the pure element while those richer in Sc display helimagnetism with lock-in effects at low temperature. The sample closest to the multicritical point (x=0.28) shows unusual magnetic behavior at low temperatures.

    Notes: Nanosecond pulses from a Nd:YAG laser are used to excite clamped aluminum disks to resonance. The first two flexural vibration modes are shown to be in agreement with classical plate theory. This theory is then applied to the case of flat-bottomed holes in aluminum plates, when the remainder of the plate below the hole may be said to be partially clamped. It is shown that the theory can still be used over a well-defined regime. In addition, the depth of the hole can be obtained from the ring-around longitudinal ultrasonic pulse generated by the laser. A combination of these two techniques, therefore, allows a sizing of circularlike flaws in laminations lying close to a sample's surface.

    Notes: In a group of 10 women with circulating lupus anticoagulant 25 intrauterine deaths were previously documented in the nine multigravidae. The presence of lupus anticoagulant activity was confirmed by showing prolongation of the activated partial thromboplastin time and kaolin clotting time with failure of correction of the prolongation on incubation with normal plasma. A clinical diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was made in four women. Three had deep vein thrombosis in pregnancy, one chorea gravidarum while two had only recurrent fetal losses. All the women had positive antinuclear antibody tests and blood platelet counts 〈175 × 109/1. Anti-smooth muscle antibody and VDRL tests were each positive in half the patients; anti-DNA antibody was present in two patients with clinically active SLE. In six pregnancies correction of the activated partial thromboplastin and kaolin clotting time was attempted using prednisone (40–60 mg/day); aspirin, 75 mg/day, was added. Five live infants were obtained, four by spontaneous delivery, when the restoration of the clotting abnormalities to normal was achieved. In one woman presenting with extensive deep vein thrombosis a live infant was delivered following therapeutic doses of heparin and low dose aspirin. Maternal lupus anticoagulant activity has major implications for pregnancy and should be excluded in women with a clinical suspicion of SLE, a positive antinuclear antibody test, thrombotic episodes, biologically false-positive VDRL and unexplained late or repetitive early fetal losses.
