Notes: Scanning tunneling potentiometry has been used to simultaneously image the surface topography and map the potential distribution on films of (La0.7Sr0.3)MnO3 deposited on polycrystalline and single crystal MgO substrates. Potential steps in the polycrystalline films coincide with the crystallite boundaries in the film. The grain boundary resistivity varies in the range 3×10−7–3×10−5 Ω cm2, with a typical value of 6×10−6 Ω cm2. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Ribonucleosides are minor milk constituents and show a typical pattern which is assumed to be species-specific. As well as the unmodified components adenosine, cytidine, guanosine, inosine, and uridine, modified compounds such as N1-methyladenosine and N6-carbamoylthreonyladenosine — products of the transfer RNA catabolism — have been identified and quantified in individual and bulk herd (race: German black pied) milk samples throughout a whole lactation period. The results of our longitudinal study have shown that — with the exception of the colostral phase — the levels of these minor constituents vary only slightly throughout lactation. These findings imply that ribonucleosides are useful for characterizing milk of different species and technological treatment. Ribonucleosides were determined and balanced, for example, in the course of the churning process, showing that the pattern of these minor milk constituents is useful as a “fingerprint” that allows differentiation between the three butter types defined in the German Federal Butter Ordinance.

Notes: Summary Based on histology and electron microscopy, a series of Papova virus acanthomas consisting of 300 common warts and Condylomata acuminata as well as primary efflorescences of 7 typical and 7 questionable cases of Epidermodysplasia verruciformis have been classified. Four cytological types expressing different cytopathogenic viral actions were established. Typ 4 (“basophilic foamy giant keratinocytes”) seems to be specific for Epidermodysplasia verruciformis which thus can be differentiated histologically against ordinary warts (type 1–3).

Notes: Abstract Topically applied retinoic acid induces partial or complete clinical regressions of senile or actinic keratoses as well as of basal cell carcinomas of the skin. 15 out of 16 treated basal cell carcinomas regressed by more than 50%, regressions being complete in 5 cases. The mode of action of retinoic acid on premalignant and malignant lesions is discussed.

Notes: Abstract: The magnetic properties of ( La 1-x Sr x ) MnO 3 crystals have been studied. The ac susceptibility has been measured at frequencies ranging from 10 Hz to 1 000 Hz. The x = 0.25 crystal shows a typical ferromagnetic behaviour with a dimensionless SI susceptibility of 6 below T c = 350 K limited by the demagnetizing field. Both x = 0 and x = 0.06 crystals show very sharp peaks in and at the Néel points, 139 K and 135 K respectively. This is quite unlike the usual behaviour of an antiferromagnet. Magnetization measurements on an untwinned single crystal of LaMnO 3 show a weak moment of at 4.2 K which is directed along the c axis. The origin of this canted antiferromagnetic structure is discussed in terms of anisotropy and of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is concluded that anistropy is insufficient to explain the canted antiferromagnetism.
