Notes: We introduced columnar defects into (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ Ag tapes by irradiation with 2.65 GeV 197Au ions to investigate the dimensionality of pinning for this compound. Samples were irradiated up to fluences of 3.5×1011 ions/cm2 at a temperature of 100 K. The ion beam was directed both perpendicular and under a tilt angle of −60° to the tape surface. Our samples showed homogeneous columnar line defects throughout the whole thickness of the superconducting core. As a novel result we found evidence for marked deviations from two-dimensional behavior at elevated temperatures both in magnetic and in transport measurements.

Notes: We report on significant enhancements of the transport critical current densities Jc in (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10/Ag tapes at 77 K and higher magnetic fields after neutron irradiation. This enhancement is attributed to an improvement in the flux pinning capability of this material by the neutron-induced defects. The angular dependence of Jc is still consistent with two-dimensionality, i.e., flux pinning of pancake and/or Josephson vortices is directly confirmed by this transport measurement. Fast neutron irradiation also affects the weak links in a way which agrees with previous results on unaligned ceramics. However, there are some peculiarities which need further investigation. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The microstructures of single filaments of silver-sheathed (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ-multifilament tapes are investigated by polarized light and scanning electron microscopy. Large differences in the microstructure of filaments depending on their position in the cross section of the tape are found. The influence of this microstructure on the critical current density is investigated by magneto-optics. A drastic reduction of the critical current density by a factor of about 10 of the outer, compared to the filaments in the center of the tape is observed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract An excellent tool to enhance the critical current density in superconductors is the controlled introduction of defects by irradiation damage. Irradiation with 2.65 GeV Au ions provides the generation of amorphous line defects. Polycrystalline (Bi, Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 + δ Ag tapes processed by the powder-in-tube technique were irradiated up to doses of 3.5× 1011 Au ions/cm2 at a temperature of 100 K. On the one hand, our irradiation experiments were performed to investigate the degree ofj c enhancement and, on the other hand, to examine the flux pinning mechanism in (Bi, Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 + δ tapes. Characterization of the samples was performed by magnetization measurements using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) up to 13 T in a temperature range between 5 and 100 K. Further, we have measured the relaxation of the magnetic moment before and after irradiation to determine the influence of columnar defects on the activation energyU. A comparison of the irradiation-induced effects with previous results obtained on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 + δ irradiation experiments is included.
