Summary A study was undertaken of the microbial composition of aggregates from an acidifying anaerobic gas-lift reactor. For this purpose a simple 100 ml anaerobic gas lift reactor was developed. It was found that the predominant organism in the aggregates was Selenomonas ruminantium. Both, microscopical observations and a newly developed enumeration technique led to the conclusion that the mixed granules consisted mainly of this organism. Grown in pure culture, S. ruminantium was capable of forming aggregates. These aggregates resembled the mixed aggregates both macro- as well as microscopically. Furthermore the fermentation pattern of this pure aggregated culture was similar to that of a mixed aggregated culture.
