Notes: Abstract The compositions of five different coexisting pyroxenes hypersthene, pigeonite and augite in groundmass and bronzite and augite of phenocryst in a tholeiitic andesite from Hakone Volcano, Japan have been determined by the electron probe microanalyser. It is shown that there is a compositional gap of about 25 mole per cent CaSiO3 between groundmass pigeonite and augite, compared with 35 per cent CaSiO3 between phenocrystic augite and bronzite. Subcalcic augite or pigeonitic augite was not found. The groundmass augite, which occurs only as thin rims of pigeonite and hypersthene, is less calcic and more iron-rich than the phenocryst augite. It is also shown that the groundmass pigeonite is 3–4 mole per cent more CaSiO3-rich than the coexisting groundmass hypersthene. The Fe/(Mg + Fe) ratios of these coexisting hypersthene and pigeonite are about 0.31 and 0.33, respectively. It is suggested from these results that a continuous solid solution does not exist between augite and pigeonite of the Fe/(Mg + Fe) ratio at least near 0.3 under the conditions of crystallization of groundmass of the tholeiitic andesite. It is suggested from the Mg-Fe partition and the textural relation that the groundmass augite crystallized from a liquid more iron-rich than that from which groundmass hypersthene and pigeonite crystallized.

Notes: Abstract Clinopyroxenes from various lithologic units in a single tholeiitic dolerite intrusion 50 m thick were analysed with the electron microprobe. Microphenocrysts of augite in the chilled marginal rock have the least scattered Ca∶Mg∶Fe ratios, around Ca38Mg50Fe12, and lowest Ti/Al ratios, less than 1/4, of the augites examined; they crystallized prior to emplacement. The augites which crystallized in situ are more Fe-rich and have higher Ti/Al ratios, close to 1/2. Pigeonite started crystallizing later than augite and formed rims to augite crystals. Continuous zoning from augite to subcalcic augite as was previously reported by Benson (1944) for the same dolerite is not observed. Subcaloic ferroaugites, however, link augite and ferropigeonite in the outermost margins of pyroxenes in the later segregations. The small scale differentiation in situ gave rise to globules, veins, and pegmatoids, in which sector-zoning of augite is well developed. The {100} sectors are enriched in MgSiO3, FeSiO3, and MnSiO3 components relative to the {010} and the {110} sectors, and are accordingly depleted in other components. The protosite theory of sector-zoning formation proposed by Nakamura (1973) is further developed and the environment which favours the development of sector-zoning is discussed. The formation of augite rims around quartz-rich xenoliths and the compositional characteristics of the augites concerned are due to local high silica activities. Comments are made concerning some lunar pyroxenes in the light of the present study.

Notes: Abstract Nitrate and phosphate uptake kinetics ofChattonella antiqua were examined under light and dark conditions. The uptake kinetics ofC. antiqua followed the Michaelis-Menten equation. The maximal uptake rates (V max) of nitrate and phosphate in the dark were 86 and 93% of those in the light, respectively. The half-saturation constants (K 8 ) were not significantly affected by illumination and were comparable to those of other phytoplankton. However, specific maximal uptake rates ofC. antiqua for these substrates were much smaller than those of other phytoplankton.

Notes: Abstract Chattonella antiqua (Raphidophyceae), which causes heavy red tides in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, was placed in axenic clonal culture by micropipette washing. The effects of temperature, salinity, light intensity and pH on growth were monitored. Maximum growth occurred at 25°C, at salinities between 25 and 41‰, under light intensities above 0.04 ly min−1. The pH effect was not significant in the pH range from 7.6 to 8.3. Comparisons of our results with those from field observations suggest that the development of theC. antiqua red tide is strongly temperature dependent.

Notes: Abstract Ammonium uptake kinetics and interactions between nitrate and ammonium uptake were examined inChattonella antiqua. After the addition of ammonium to the culture ofC. antiqua, the ammonium concentration decreased linearly with time. The ammonium uptake rate as a function of ammonium concentration followed the Michaelis-Menten equation; the maximal uptake rate was 2.0 pmol cell−1hr−1 and the half saturation constant, 2.2ΜM. Although the ammonium uptake was not affected by nitrate, uptake of nitrate was rapidly (≪15min) suppressed by ammonium and a 50% reduction in nitrate uptake was observed at an ammonium concentration ofca. 2ΜM.
