Notes: Abstract Moderate dispersion (46 Å mm−1 at Hα) image-tube spectrum (5800–7300 Å) of the S star π1 Gru is found to exhibit several unidentified molecular features, in addition to the well-known bands of the oxides ofs-process elements. A list is presented of 28 measured unidentified red-degraded bands, of which six, at 5998, 6128, 6143, 6223, 6257, and 6557 Å, are prominent. Of the reported 28 bands, 22 are observed for the first time. A discussion is included on the expected molecular sources of the unidentified features. The possible presence of two new molecules, Pr O and Nd O, in π1 Gru is suggested.

Notes: Abstract The calculated band positions and intensity factors for the bands of the infraredA-X transition of A10, suggest that an investigation for the infrared bands in the 1 to 5 μm region of the spectra of Mira stars and M supergiants, along with the “blue-green’ (B-X) bands, could provide clues to the Mira phenomena. The need for additional laboratory investigation of the infrared electronic transition is emphasized.

Notes: Abstract The unidentified absorption feature at 9730±5 Å observed in the spectra of pure S stars is provisionally identified with the predicted 9732 Å (0,0) band of thee 1II-c 1Δ transition of ZrO molecule. Relative band strengths and band head positions ofthis transition in the 8300–12 500 Å region are presented to assist both laboratory and stellar spectral studies. The insistent need for the laboratory study of gas phase infrared spectrum of ZrO is accentuated.

Notes: Abstract Identifications of the molecular absorption features in the visible spectrum of the S star Pi Gruis are presented. Moderate dispersion spectrum of π1 Gru covering the region 5800–7300 Å, demonstrates the presence of a multitude of molecular bands. Wavelength measures of well over 150 red-degraded band heads are listed. Nearly 80% of the observed features are identified with the ZrO, LaO, YO, and CeO molecules. Many molecular bands due to ZrO, YO, and CeO are reported identified for the first time. Neither TiO molecular features nor any Ba compounds are detectable. As a consequence of the presence of bands due tos-process oxides and the absence of TiO bands, π1 Gru may be classified as a pure S star. Observed predominance of the ZrO molecule suggests that both the phenomenon of Zr abundance enhancements and chemical equilibrium conditions with a carbon/oxygen ratio between 0.95 and 1.0 may be at play in the atmospheres of cooler pure S stars.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine emissionsspektrographische Methode zur Bestimmung von 14 Spurenelementen wie Bor, Blei, Zinn usw. in Solarzellensilicium wurde beschrieben.
Notes: Summary An optical emission spectrographic method is described for the estimation of fourteen trace metallic impurities such as B, Pb, Sn etc., in solar-grade silicon. The silicon is ground under liquid nitrogen, then mixed with high-purity graphite powder and sodium fluoride (the latter to improve the line-to-background ratio). The mixture is excited in a d. c. arc (12 A) in a nitrogen atmosphere. The spectra of the sample and standards over the wavelength region 2400–3350 Å are photographed. The detection limits for the various elements range from 1 to 25 ppm. A matrix line of silicon is chosen as the internal standard. The mean coefficient of variation in the determination of the various elements is between 9 and 24%.

Notes: Abstract New identifications are reported of the fourth positive bands and Cameron bands of CO in the IUE satellite spectrum of Comet Bradfield (1979l). Although the predicted band intensities as well as the band identifications in Comet West (1976 VI) support the proposed assignments, VUV cometary spectra of higher resolution are necessary for conformation.

Notes: Abstract For use in the investigations of magnesium monoxide lines in sunspot spectra, values of Franck-Condon intensity factors for the red bands and the wavelength regions for the intense bands of the red and near-ultraviolet transitions of MgO are presented. The results indicate that a search for the lines of the red and near-ultraviolet bands in the sunspot spectra could resolve the questionable presence of MgO in sunspots.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A method has been described for the determination of eighteen trace elements in refractory magnesium oxide by optical emission spectroscopy. The main feature of the method is the use of a spectroscopic buffer instead of a carrier. When conducting graphite powder has been added as a buffer to the MgO sample prior to its excitation in a d.c. arc, there has been a smooth distillation of the matrix magnesium as well as the trace elements into the arc column. Addition of a carrier, however, does not either completely prevent the emission of Mg spectrum or result in smooth distillation. A Hilger large quartz spectrograph has been employed to record the spectra excited at 10 amp d.c. The Ga line at 265.99 nm has been used as an internal standard for the more volatile trace elements and the Mg line at 280.98 nm has been employed as an internal standard for the less volatile trace elements. The detection limits obtained range from 0.5–5 ppm for the various elements. The mean relative standard deviation (RSD) of the method is ± 14%.
