    Notes: We have studied the dynamics of the iron spins in a superconducting YBa2(Cu0.94Fe0.06)3O7 sample by neutron time-of-flight measurements. The range of scattering vector q was 0.1〈q〈2.1 A(ring)−1, and the energy resolution 80 μeV. The temperature was varied in the range 1.8 K〈T〈300 K. In the whole temperature range, the q dependence of the magnetic intensity mainly reflects the magnetic form factor of iron which shows that the iron spins are almost uncorrelated. The elastic and quasielastic intensities strongly vary with temperature. A spin-glass-like freezing is revealed at low temperature by a sharp decrease of the quasielastic intensity, an increase of the elastic, or resolution limited intensity and a minimum in the quasielastic width. The freezing temperature (Tf(approximately-equal-to)18 K) corresponds to that already determined by a magnetic splitting in Mössbauer experiments. Above Tf, the relaxation of the iron spins in the paramagnetic state is modified by the occurrence of superconductivity. We observe a slight increase of the quasielastic intensity and of the quasielastic width at the superconducting transition (Tc(approximately-equal-to)74 K), possibly related to the electron-spin coupling.

    Notes: We report here results of our investigations of the nonbolometric mode of detection in granular Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films. We find that both bolometric and nonbolometric modes appear in the same sample under mutually exclusive conditions: bolometric with light (633 nm) and nonbolometric with microwaves (9 GHz). Our measurements indicate that the nonbolometric mode of detection is more sensitive than the bolometric mode in our samples, a result which offers promise for application to microwave power measurement. Possible mechanisms for the nonbolometric mode are reviewed, and the concept of using a broadband spiral antenna directly coupled to the superconducting detector for microwave power sensing is briefly described.

    Notes: A novel method for measurement of magnetic field, based upon magnetically modulated resistance in superconductors, is described and demonstrated with microwave absorption data in a Bi0.9Pb0.1SrCaCu2Ox sample. The method can be implemented as a vector magnetometer and, with suitable superconductors, could provide absolute magnetic field measurements.

    Notes: Thin films of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, deposited on (100) cubic zirconia by laser ablation from a bulk superconducting target of nominal composition BiSrCaCu2 Ox , have been investigated by dc resistance and magnetically modulated microwave absorption measurements. The latter technique reveals important features regarding the phase purity of superconducting samples that are masked in the dc resistance measurements. The superconducting behavior of the films, as a function of the substrate temperature during deposition and the post-deposition annealing conditions, is discussed.

    Notes: Thin films of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O have been deposited on crystalline quartz substrates by laser ablation. Without a buffer layer, superconducting regions exist in the films as detected by magnetically modulated microwave absorption. However, with a 1000-A(ring) zirconia buffer layer, also deposited by laser ablation, continuous, superconducting thin films were obtained. It is shown that both annealing temperature and annealing time greatly affect the film quality.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of iron-oxide particulates dispersed in silver (prepared by rf diode sputtering silver and iron oxide over a wide composition range) have been investigated using the Mössbauer effect, electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The sputtered films are nanocrystalline mixtures of immiscible particles of the two constituents (even when only a very small amount of silver is present). At room temperature, the Mössbauer effect data show that for most compositions (even those with low silver content) the majority of the film is superparamagnetic, with the fraction of material in the superparamagnetic state increasing with increasing Ag content. Consistent with these results, very narrow hysteresis loops were observed. On decreasing the temperature to near 100 K, the fraction of material in the superparamagnetic state decreased and the magnetically ordered component increased. Electron diffraction patterns clearly showed the presence of polycrystalline Ag and Fe3 O4 in the films, but composition analysis (0.03 μm resolution) was unable to separate these regions.

    Notes: A new technique for detection of superconductivity which is based upon microwave resistivity is described. This method is similar in both its implementation and execution to the technique of electron-spin resonance, and, as a consequence, exhibits high sensitivity. An additional benefit of this method is the fact that metal-insulator phase transitions of materials are recorded only if they have a magnetic field dependence.

    Notes: Mössbauer studies on two distinct microstructural phases produced in the same batch of melt-spun Fe60Al28B12 reveal distinctly different spectra and hyperfine field distributions. One phase is essentially an amorphous ferromagnet, whereas the other contains a large paramagnetic component together with amorphous ferromagnetic material.

    Notes: X-ray scattering, magnetism, and electrical transport studies on amorphous thin films of MnxB100−x alloys with x=52 and 48 are reported. Each alloy exhibits a low-field (5 G) static susceptibility peak (10 K, x=52; 16 K, x=48) associated with a spin-glass transition. Isothermal magnetization data (6 K) are analyzed within the random anisotropy model of Chudnovsky, Saslow, and Serota. The magnetization isotherm for the x=52 alloy is dominated at high fields (〉24 kG) by field-induced moments, while for x=48 a term (αH−1/2) arising from a ferromagnet with a wandering axis prevails to the highest field strength (44 kG). Initially the electrical resistance for these Mn-B alloys decreases monotonically with decreasing temperature, reaching a minimum (Tm) at 22 K (x=52) and 45 K (x=48). For T〉Tm, a quadratic form can be effectively employed, with a negative T2 coefficient and a positive linear coefficient. The rise in resistivity for T〈Tm conforms to a −(T)1/2 law and is interpreted in terms of a disorder-induced localization transition in a correlated electron gas. Both alloys display only weakly field-dependent (to 10 kG) magnetoresistance.
