    A new gastropod genus and species from Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles (1984)

    Description: West Indian molluscs have been studied by the Department of Malacology of the Zoological Museum Amsterdam for many years. Recently new material collected by Brother M. ARNOLDO (A. N. BROEDERS) and Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK became available which was studied by the second author. During 1982 several West Indian islands were visited by the first author, and mollusc samples were taken on the islands Puerto Rico, St. Martin, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. Material was collected in various biotopes, from the littoral zone down to about 50 m. Most of the micro-molluscs were sorted out from coral sand. In a sample, taken at 45 m depth off Bonaire, some interesting species were found. In this article we will describe a new species, belonging to a new genus, from that station.

    Description: Micromolluscs of the family Rissoidae and belonging to the genus Alvania s.l. from the Canary Islands and the Madeira archipelago are revised. For several species the type locality is restricted and lectotypes are designated for Rissoa canadensis d’Orbigny, 1839, R. euchila Watson, 1886, R. aurantiaca Watson, 1873, R. leacocki Watson, 1873,and R. macandrewi Manzoni, 1868. Two species ( Alvania guancha n.sp. and A. piersmai n.sp.) are new to science.

    Description: Several Conus species of the coast of Oman are revised. Conus stocki n. sp. is described from Mas\xc3\xafrah Island. For C. ardisiaceus Kiener, 1845, a neotype is designated. A lectotype is selected for C. luctificus Reeve, 1848. C. lischkeanus tropicensis Coomans & Filmer, 1985, has a disjunct range in the Indian Ocean. The recorded distribution of C. parvatus sharmiensis Wils, 1986, is enlarged from the Red Sea to the coast of Oman. c. quasimagnificus Da Motta, 1982, is provisionally considered a subspecies of C. pennaceus Born, 1778.

    Description: On August 3, 1982 a small squid was collected opposite “Trans World Radio” at Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles). It was kept in a tank for several hours before it died. The species was identified as Pickfordiateuthis pulchella Voss, 1953, hitherto only known from the Florida Keys, U.S.A. According to Voss (1953) it was probably confined to the geographical area represented by the Florida Keys. ABBOTT (1974) mentioned a distribution from southeast Florida to Panama without refering to literature other than Voss (1953). The specimen from Bonaire, a male, differs from the figure of the holotype (a female) mainly in having proportionally shorter tentacles and the posterior end less bluntly tapered. It agrees well with the male paratype, figured by Voss (1953: fig. 3). The measurements of the specimen are: mantle length 16.0 mm, width 6.9 mm and length of head 7.1 mm. The pigmentation of the dorsal side of the head consists of chromatophores, which are larger and darker than those on the ventral side. The pigmentation on the dorsal side of the mantle is less prominent and consists of more diffuse and smaller spots. The ventral side of the mantle is hardly pigmentated with very small dots.

    Description: The Pectinoidea species collected on the coral reefs around the Berau Islands (East Kalimantan, Indonesia) were studied. Nineteen species (four Propeamussiidae, fifteen Pectinidae) are listed from the Berau Islands. Three pectinoidean species are new to science, of which two are described herein: Parvamussium caesicium n. sp. and Talochlamys inaequalis n. sp. Two pectinid species (Pascahinnites coruscans coruscans and Palliolum minutulum) are new records for Indonesia.

    Description: The holotype of Conus pusio Sowerby I, 1834, is traced in the National Museum of Wales. This specimen also represents the holotype of C. melvilli Sowerby III, 1879, which fact makes both taxa objective synonyms. Since the name C. pusio is preoccupied by Hwass, 1792, the valid name for the species is C. melvilli. The holotype is a unique specimen; although mentioned from Key West, its locality is unknown. Conus melvilli \xe2\x80\x9cSowerby\xe2\x80\x9d in Perry, 1939, from Florida was renamed C. perryae Clench, 1942.

    Description: Dr. Manuel Carrillo P\xc3\xa8rez (Universidad de la Laguna) has sent some dredge-samples to the first author. This material contained many interesting molluscs, not mentioned by Nordsieck & Talavera (1979). Amongst them was a very peculiar gastropod species, which was difficult to identify. Based on some shell characters, it is provisionally clasified with the family Aclididae.
