    Notes: Abstract. The effect of fluoride therapy on the osteopenic bone of the ovariectomized rat was studied by comparing the densitometric and biomechanical data. Forty retired breeder female Sprague-Dawley rats aged 10 months were randomly divided into five groups. One group (Group A) was killed at the beginning of the study and was used as a baseline. Three groups were ovariectomized and one was sham-operated (Group B) and observed for the same period as a sham-aged group. A group of ovariectomized rats was used as a sham therapy control (Group C) and received only deionized drinking water; the other two groups (F1 and F2) received L-glutamine monofluorophosphate and calcium at a rate of 1:30 F/Ca at different doses by gavage (0.57 mg F/17 mg Ca per kg/day-Group F1; 0.21 mg F/6.30 mg Ca per kg/day-Group F2). Densitometric and biomechanical (compression and three-point bending test) assays, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy were performed on femoral specimens. Biomechanical data showed that the femoral heads of Group F2 required a significantly greater energy-to-failure than Group C (P 〈 0.05) as well as treated femoral diaphysis when compared with the others (P 〈 0.01). Significant increases in the elastic modules were observed in fluoride-treated groups (P 〈 0.001) when compared with other groups. Diffractometric and spectroscopic data showed the presence of fluorine-apatite in both treated groups with a high component of carbonates. Also, fluoride therapy causes an increase of bone stiffness due to the presence of fluoroapatite. It seems to produce two opposed properties in the osteopenic rat bone: a higher resistance to compression loading and a greater frailty to flexion loading.

    Notes: Research was carried out on the use of ceramics as supports to host mammalian cells. The research was part of a programme whose priority was to study the possibility of using ceramics in the non-traditional sector of the biomedical field. The aim of the study was also to verify the suitability of particular types of ceramics dealt with in the literature for these applications. Among the different samples tested the cordieritic one proved to be very interesting, at least in relation to the cellular cultures considered. The chemical composition of the material is not, however, the only important aspect, since other parameters concur to make the hosting of cells highly acceptable. Of particular importance is the rugosity and porosity of the surface and its flaking, not only externally, but also in the pores.

    Notes: Cylinders (0.8 cm long, 1.0 cm of diameter and with an axial hole), constituted, after firing, of a ceramic mixture of hydroxylapatite (HA) and β-ricalciumphosphate (β-TCP) in a 10:1 ratio, were implanted into mid-diaphiseal defects of one femur of 20 rabbits and stabilized with intramedullary rods. The implantation sites were checked radiographically every month, and after 3 months (3 animals) and 6 months (17 animals) the rabbits were sacrificed and the implants with the surrounding tissue were embedded in methylmetacrylate, cut to thick sections and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Porosimetric and x-rays diffraction analyses were carried out before and after implantation of the cylinders, and the state of mineralization at the bone-implant interface was determined by EDAX microprobe analysis. Bony callus formation started at 1 month at the osteotomy sites, as judged by radiography, but after 3 months a not-mineralized zone had still been demonstrated between bone and the implants. At 6 months, 13 implants showed themselves firmly fixed in their implantations beds, while 4 implants were only incorporated at their proximal ends. In bone contact zones, an enrichment of Ca2+ was displayed by microanalytical techniques in the outer zone of the implanted samples which may be explained by an apparent additional phase transformation of HA into TCP, thanks to the change of the Ca/P ratio, that takes place in vivo.
