    Notes: Salt-affected soil is a major world-wide problem with many hectares of land lost to cultivation each year .To combat this problem, the development and assessment of a novel salt tolerant cereal, tritipyrum, was carried out. This is a hybrid between wheat and Thinopyrum bessarabicum. a very salt-tolerant member of the Triticeae.A range of tritipyrums derived from crosses between tetraploid wheat, Triticum durum, and Th. bessarabicum was produced. Although meiosis in ihe tritipyrums was generally regular, chromosome pairing failure was observed in each of the genotypes. In addition, the level of fertility was relatively low, the fertility of bagged spikes ranging from 29% to 51%. One iritipyrum produced multiple seeds in some florets. Three tritipyrums selected at random performed better than their wheat parents in hydroculture experiments in each of three treatments (150, 200 and 250 mol/ m3 Nacl). The potential for the exploitation of tritipyrum in salt-affected soils is discussed.

    Notes: The main objective of this work is to demonstrate the expression of salt tolerance genes in a wheat-Agropyron amphiploid. Salt tolerance tests were carried out on wheat varieties, ‘Chinese Spring,’ and ‘Glenn-son 81’ the amphiploid between ‘Chinese Spring’ and A. junceum, A. junceum and amphiploid × wheat hybrids, Apart from germination in petridishes all other tests were carried out on plants grown in saline hydroculture tanks. Fresh weight measurements are given for stressed and non-stressed plants as well as measurements of harvest ripe plants. The utility of A. junceum as a source of salt tolerance genes for wheat is discussed.

    Notes: The responses to salt stress in NFT (nutrient film) hydroponics of ‘Chinese Spring’ wheat and a number of its aneuploids involving the chromosomes of homoeologous group 5 were studied. This showed that the absence of chromosome 5D allowed plants to survive better than in the euploid condition. Much of this response could be related to the effects of Vrn3, which conditions the spring habit of ‘Chinese Spring’. The ability to survive relatively high levels of stress was promoted by the group 5 homoeologue from Thinopyrum bessarabicum.

    Notes: Lines of Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring carrying an additional chromosome 5Eb from Thinopyrum bessarabicum or having chromosome 5A or 5D replaced by chromosome 5Eb were screened in hydroculture for tolerance to salt. The previously reported tolerance of the 5Eb addition line was confirmed and the two substitution lines were shown to have a higher level of survival in 175 mol/m3 NaCl than both the addition and the ‘Chinese Spring’ parent. Reasons for the better tolerance of the substitutions are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The transmission of chromosome 4S l from Aegilops sharonensis was observed in a range of wheat genetic backgrounds. Chromosome 4S l was transmitted at a very high frequency (at least 97.8%) in all crosses. The genetic background appears to only have a small effect on transmission. The frequency of transmission of chromosome 4S l was the same in each genetic background through both the male and female gametes.

    Notes: Abstract   Genetic maps of the homoeologous group-6 chromosomes of bread wheat, Triticum aestivum, have been constructed spanning 103 cM on 6A, 90 cM on 6B and 124 cM on 6D. These maps were transferred to a Chinese Spring (CS)×line #31 cross to locate a dominant powdery mildew resistance gene, Pm12, introgressed into line #31 from Aegilops speltoides. Pm12 was shown to lie on the short arm of translocation chromosome 6BS-6SS.6SL in line #31, but could not be mapped more precisely due to the lack of recombination between the 6S Ae. speltoides segment and chromosome 6B. Possible strategies to reduce the size of the alien segment, which probably encompasses the complete long arm and more than 82% of the short arm of chromosome 6B, are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The time at which plants emerge from the soil is shown to be correlated with both survival and growth in each of four years in a plant community emerging after yearly plowing. For all seven species investigated, earlier emerging individuals generally had both a higher biomass and probability of survival. There were differences among species in the effect of emergence time on biomass, with the growth of upright, annual species being more suppressed by later emergence than the growth of other species. No significant differences were found among species in the effects of emergence time on survival. It was expected that differences among species in the effect of emergence time on fitness might lead to a correlation between the patterns of emergence time and species characteristics such as growth form or lifespan. Mean emergence times did vary significantly among both the seven species and the four years of the study. However, there was no correlation between emergence time and species lifespan, growth form, abundance, or competitive ability. The lack of a correlation between the selection pressure on species and their emergence time could be due low heritability, insufficient time for selection and evolution, and/or selection on correlated characters.

    Notes: Abstract Although population density is believed to be an important factor influencing evolutionary processes, surprisingly few studies have documented the existence or nature of density-dependent selection. We quantified the effects of density on directional selection on seed mass (the mass of a sown seed) and emergence time in the greenhouse and field for the annual plant Plantago wrightiana. In the greenhouse, we quantified selection on seed mass and emergence time at each of five planting densities (1 m−2 to 10,000 m−2) using the relationship between final plant mass and each trait at each density. We observed no significant selection on either seed mass or emergence time when plants were grown alone. At all higher densities, there was significant selection favoring early emergence and large seed mass, but there were no significant differences among the selection gradients determined at densities greater than individually grown plants. In the field, we detected no relationship between the magnitude of selection for early emergence and density. Our results suggest that selection on seed mass and time of emergence is density dependent, but the relationship between density and the magnitude of directional selection on these traits is not continuously increasing. Over broad ranges of density in the greenhouse and in the field, there was no detectable relationship between density and the magnitude of directional selection.

    Notes: Abstract A survey of the abundances of species that inhabit the water-bearing leaves of the pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea was conducted at several different spatial scales in northern Florida. Individual leaves are hosts to communities of inquiline species, including mosquitoes, midges, mites, copepods, cladocerans, and a diverse bacterial assemblage. Inquiline communities were quantified from four pitchers per plant, three plants per subpopulation, two subpopulations per population, and three populations. Species varied in abundance at different spatial scales. Variation in the abundances of mosquitoes and copepods was not significantly associated with any spatial scale. Midges varied in abundance at the level of populations; one population contained significantly more midges than the other two. Cladocerans varied at the level of the subpopulation, whereas mites varied at the level of the individual plants. Bacterial communities were described by means of Biolog plates, which quantify the types of carbon media used by the bacteria in each pitcher. Bacterial communities were found to vary significantly in composition among individual plants but not among populations or subpopulations. These results suggest that independent factors determining the abundances of individual species are important in determining community patterns in pitcher-plant inquilines.
