Labour was successfully induced by the extra-amniotic administration of prostaglandins E2 in 69 patients of widely varying maturity. Sixty-two babies were delivered in satisfactory condition, three died during labour, and there were four anencephalic infants. The use of extra-amniotic prostaglandins can be considered if induction is required in particularly unfavourable circumstances or where there is a wish to avoid artificial rupture of the membranes.
