    Description: Germany and Japan have both gained substantial experience with hydrogen production and applications, albeit with focus on different sectors. They also share similar drivers for hydrogen development and, of course, similar technical and economic opportunities and challenges. However, there also are relevant differences in the policy priorities and approaches. Notwithstanding differing emphases and patterns, the two countries share three main drivers for hydrogen development and deployment: climate mitigation and other environmental goals, energy supply diversification, and technological leadership. In this context, hydrogen has been identified by the German and the Japanese governments during the Energy Policy Dialogue as having potential for closer cooperation. The authors of this study provide an overview of demand-side deployment by sector (residential, transport, industry, power generation and power-to-x) for both countries, as well as of their hydrogen policy debates, key institutions, R&D programs and demonstration projects. They also present a short survey on relevant international platforms and initiatives in which Japan and Germany participate. On the basis of a meta-analysis of the role of hydrogen in 18 long-term energy system scenarios for Germany and 12 scenarios for Japan, this study draws conclusions on the possible role of hydrogen in the long term energy policy debates of both countries. Subsequently, the authors discuss sustainability criteria and certification schemes for clean hydrogen, compare the greenhouse gas intensity of different hydrogen supply chains and provide a data-based analysis to identify countries which could become important suppliers of clean hydrogen.

    Notes: L-threo-3-Hydroxyaspartate dehydratase (L-threo-3-hydroxyaspartate hydro-lyase), which exhibited specificity for L-threo-3-hydroxyaspartate (Km=0.74 mM, Vmax=37.5μmol min−1 (mg protein)−1) but not for D-threo or D,L-erythro-3-hydroxyaspartate, was purified from a cell-free extract of Pseudomonas sp. T62. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by hydroxylamine and EDTA, which suggests that pyridoxal 5′-phosphate and divalent cations participate in the enzyme reaction. The NH2-terminal amino acid sequence showed significant similarity to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae YKL218c gene product, a hypothetical threonine dehydratase. However, the purified enzyme showed no threonine dehydratase activity.

    Notes: Abstract: We report a case of suture line recurrence in a jejunal pouch, diagnosed 4 months after total gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer. The jejunal pouch was made with a linear stapler, without intraluminal irrigation being carried out before anastomosis, and was replaced in an interposition fashion. We propose that the recurrence was caused by the implantation of exfoliated cancer cells in either the intraluminal mucus or on a contaminated stapling device.

    Notes: Abstract  Gicerin, a cell-adhesion molecule belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, has both homophilic and heterophilic binding activities to neurite outgrowth factor, an extracellular matrix molecule in the laminin family. Gicerin is thought to play a role in the normal development of chicken kidney, because it is expressed abundantly in the embryonic organ and only slightly in the mature organ. In this study, we have examined the adhesive activity of gicerin in the kidney to characterize its function in organogenesis. We have also examined the function of gicerin in chicken nephroblastomas (“embryonic nephromas”), which show various structures resembling those in embryonic kidneys. Immunohistochemically, the expression patterns of gicerin and neurite outgrowth factor in nephroblastomas are similar to those of embryonic kidneys. Cell-aggregation assays have shown that primary culture cells from both embryonic kidneys and nephroblastomas have strong aggregation activities, and that each aggregation is partially inhibited by gicerin antibody. In contrast, cells from adult kidney exhibit weak aggregation activity that is not inhibited by the antibody. In addition, ligand blot analysis has revealed that gicerins in embryonic kidney and nephroblastoma bind to purified neurite outgrowth factor, whereas extracts from adult kidney show no positive reaction. These findings suggest that the homophilic and heterophilic adhesive activities of gicerin are involved in the formation of both normal kidney and nephroblastoma.

    Notes: Abstract: Tibial bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in 11 patients who had undergone hip joint surgery, including 10 women (22–61 years old; mean ± SD = 42.6 ± 10.3) and 1 man (61 years old). Four patients received total hip replacement (THR), while the others underwent rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO). In one case, the start of rehabilitation was delayed until 4 months after the surgery because of infection at the surgical site. Nine patients underwent hip surgery for osteoarthritis and 2 patients for avascular necrosis. These 2 patients had a history of medication with corticosteroid. BMD of the tibia on the surgically treated side was measured by a peripheral quantitative CT (pQCT) system, which provided three different BMD values of trabecular BMD in the distal portion, total BMD in the distal portion, and total BMD in the diaphysis. The measurements were obtained preoperatively, and at several time points postoperatively, at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks and 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 18, and 24 months after surgery. Brief periods of nonweightbearing lead to significant bone loss, and 1–1.5 years was required to recover to the baseline BMD. Accelerated bone loss was seen in patients in the perimenopausal state, with prolonged bed rest, and in patients receiving corticosteroid. Both trabecular and cortical components were influenced by nonweightbearing and restoration of weightbearing. The decrease in the cortical region occurs after the decrease in the trabecular and endosteal regions.

Such induction is dysregulated in type 2 diabetes, resulting in the development of fasting hyperglycemia. Hormonal and nutrient regulation of metabolic adaptation during fasting is mediated predominantly by the transcriptional coactivator peroxisome proliferative activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) in concert with various other transcriptional regulators. Although CITED2 (CBP- and p300-interacting transactivator with glutamic acid– and aspartic acid–rich COOH-terminal domain 2) interacts with many of these molecules, the role of this protein in the regulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis was previously unknown. Here we show that CITED2 is required for the regulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis through PGC-1α. The abundance of CITED2 was increased in the livers of mice by fasting and in cultured hepatocytes by glucagon-cAMP–protein kinase A (PKA) signaling, and the amount of CITED2 in liver was higher in mice with type 2 diabetes than in non-diabetic mice. CITED2 inhibited the acetylation of PGC-1α by blocking its interaction with the acetyltransferase general control of amino acid synthesis 5–like 2 (GCN5). The consequent downregulation of PGC-1α acetylation resulted in an increase in its transcriptional coactivation activity and an increased expression of gluconeogenic genes. The interaction of CITED2 with GCN5 was disrupted by insulin in a manner that was dependent on phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)–thymoma viral proto-oncogene (Akt) signaling. Our results show that CITED2 functions as a transducer of glucagon and insulin signaling in the regulation of PGC-1α activity that is associated with the transcriptional control of gluconeogenesis and that this function is mediated through the modulation of GCN5-dependent PGC-1α acetylation. We also found that loss of hepatic CITED2 function suppresses gluconeogenesis in diabetic mice, suggesting it as a therapeutic target for hyperglycemia.
