    Changes in Polyamine Levels in Rat Brain After Systemic Kainic Acid Administration: Relationship to Convulsant Activity and Brain Damage (1991)

    Notes: Abstract: We have examined the effects of systemic kainic acid (KA) administration (9 mg/kg, i.p.) on rat behavior, brain damage, and polyamine levels and the action of the specific ornithine decarboxylase inhibitor α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) on these effects. KA elicited convulsant activity in 63% of the animals. In the acute convulsant phase (1–3 h after KA), a rapid decline (−39% at 3 h) of spermidine content in frontal cortex was found. After the acute convulsant phase, levels of hippocampal spermidine and spermine were reduced (−70 and −66%, respectively, at 8 h). A dramatic increase of putrescine content (681, 1,382, and 336% at 8h, 24h, and 9 days, respectively, after KA) was found, associated with histological signs of cortical brain damage (ischemia and necrosis). There was a close relationship between the concentration of putrescine and signs of delayed toxicity (body weight losses) 24 h and 9 days after KA. DFMO partially antagonized the convulsant activity and reduced the increased putrescine levels to ∼50% of values in KA-treated animals at 24 h but did not change the pattern of histological damage. The role of polyamines in the early and late phases of KA-induced neurotoxicity is discussed.

    Notes: Micromagnetic simulations of switching processes in planar square magnetic nanoelements are presented. Nanosquares of size "a" in the range 10 lex〈a〈110 lex (lex being the exchange length, lex=(A/2πMs〈sup ARRANGE="STAGGER"〉2)1/2) and thickness "t", 0.25 lex〈t〈2 lex have been studied. Two different switching modes have been observed. The first one is basically found for very small nanoelements and it is close to uniform rotation while the second one takes place in the large nanosquares and presents an intermediate state. Good agreement of the computations with recent experimental measurements in Supermalloy is achieved. The shape of the hysteresis loops, the values of the coercivity, and the maximum in coercivity dependence with size are reproduced by the simulations. Furthermore, the two reversal mechanisms are shown to be the cause of such maximum in coercivity such as the different shapes of hysteresis loops. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The stoichiometric La0.03Sr0.255Ba0.7Nb2−yTiyO6−y/2 (LSBNT) ceramic system was obtained for three different concentrations of titanium ions (y=1%, 3%, and 5%) where the Nb5+ was substituted by Ti4+ according to the expression La0.03Sr0.255Ba0.7Nb2−yTiyO6−y/2. The incommensurate modulation in the LSBNT structure has been studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron diffraction. The location of the incommensurate superlattice spots in the tetragonal phase through the [110] zone in the electron diffraction patterns was measured to determine the incomensuration parameter δ. Structural modulation was also evident by HRTEM for the [001] zone, where a sinusoidal variation along [110] and [11¯0] was identified in coincidence with the electron diffraction patterns. Random occupation of the crystallographic sites that promotes structural variations may be the cause for structural incommensuration. It was possible to identify directly the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure and the presence of point defects that influence the dielectric properties. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We consider metrics which possess a priori certain "intrinsic symmetries'' on the three-spaces t=const. In the vacuum case, we obtain a generalization of Birkhoff's theorem and a set of solutions with a translational isometry operating on the whole space-time. In the nonvacuum case, we assume a perfect fluid matter content and a fluid flow orthogonal to the three-spaces t=const, and obtain several exact analytical solutions, some of them satisfying the standard energy conditions. In particular, a stiff equation of state is obtained in some cases, and we also have found particular solutions where a plane, spherical, or hyperbolic intrinsic symmetry is manifest.

    Notes: Peripheral nerve demyelination was induced in cats by oral administration of ether extracts of Tullidora (Karwinskia humboldtiana). Proteins from several hindlimb nerves, spinal roots, and dorsal columns of the spinal cord were subjected to slab gel electrophoresis and quantified by densitometry. In Tullidora-treated cats with severe motor disturbances, specific myelin proteins were reduced by at least 50% in motor nerves and less than 25% in cutaneous axons. There was a greater decrease of these proteins in the distal than in the cephalad segments of the sciatic nerve; no changes were detected either in the spinal roots or in the white matter of the spinal cord. Electron microscopy revealed intense demyelination in the motor nerves only. Both the density of the 100 Å-thick neurofilaments and the relative proportion of a polypeptide with a molecular weight of 68,000 were considerably increased in the affected nerves. It is tentatively concluded that the active principles of Tullidora may enter the axons through the motor nerve terminals. The distal segments of the motor nerves would then be preferentially affected and demyelination could result from axonal damage.

    Notes: The pattern of ontogenetic development of tryptophan (TP), tryptamine (T), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin), and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) in the brains of rats aged 1–45 days is presented. Analysis of the five components in each brain allows the calculation of the acid/amine and amine/amino acid ratios. These metabolic indexes are a useful tool to study and compare the metabolic origins and fates of both amines. The ontogenetic patterns of TP, T, and IAA are very similar, especially during the first week postpartum. The highest and lowest levels found for T were 2.2 ng/g and 0.1 ng/g at the 1st and 5th day, respectively. The temporal relationship between the T/TP and IAA/T ratios suggests the existence of mechanisms protecting T against monoamine oxidase (MAO) which develop in parallel to synaptogenesis. Significant correlations were found between TP and IAA during the whole period studied and between TP and T during the first week after birth. The 5-HT peak found during the first postpartum week could be due to a non-neuronal pool of 5-HT protected against MAO and possibly contained in mast cells. Preliminary determinations on leptomeningeal membranes suggest the existence of such a pool.

    Notes: We are reporting three patients who experienced delayed cutaneous reactions after treatment with paracetamol (acetaminophen). These reactions were confirmed in controlled challenge tests. Patch tests with paracetamol were positive in all patients. A biopsy performed of the case 1 patch test confirmed that the lesion was compatible with delayed hypersensitivity reaction-type allergic contact dermatitis

    Notes: We evaluate the effect of high moisture content (MC) stored maize grain on tortilla quality and on the growth of toxigenic fungi. Maize with a MC of 18% was stored for 10, 15, and 20 d at 28 °C. The control seed was stored 20 d with a MC of 10.7% at 4 °C. The high MC grain and the control were processed using the traditional nixtamalization process. Storage conditions had a significant effect on tortilla quality parameters such as pH, color, tensile strength, cut force, viscosity peak, starch retrogradation (setback), and aflatoxin contamination. Tortillas produced with high MC grain presented a lower quality than those produced with low MC grain.

    Notes: Objectives:  To determine if motivation to change in anorexia nervosa during treatment is a predictor of hospitalisation in adolescent patients.Method:  The Anorexia Nervosa Stages of Change Questionnaire (ANSOCQ), the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to a group of 70 anorexia nervosa patients (mean age 15.6 years). They were all receiving treatment at a specialised Eating Disorder Unit and were at different points in the treatment programme. Admission during 6–9 month follow-up was recorded in 63 of these patients who had been admitted to the Unit. The other 7 patients were contacted by phone to determine if they had been hospitalised in another unit during the follow-up period.Results:  Patients who needed hospital admission during follow-up had higher mean scores at first evaluation on some of the EDI-2 scales and on the BDI, lower ANSOCQ scores and were more likely to have been outpatients at first evaluation. In the logistic regression analysis a low ANSOCQ score and being an outpatient at first evaluation were shown to be independent predictors of hospitalisation during follow-up.Conclusions:  Low motivation to change, depressive symptomatology and some EDI-2 scales are related to the necessity of hospital admission in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa.
