    Notes: Abstract The effects of caffeine (1–100 mg/kg, IP), (-)N-((R)-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)-adenosine (PIA) (0.01–1 mg/kg, IP), and of the two drugs in combination were studied in mice responding under a mult FR30 FI600 s schedule of food presentation. The lowest dose of caffeine, 1 mg/kg, had no effect on responding under either component of the mult schedule. Intermediate doses of caffeine (3 and 10 mg/kg) slightly increased responding under the FI component, while higher doses decreased responding. Caffeine only decreased responding, at doses above 30 mg/kg, under the FR component. PIA decreased responding under both components of the mult schedule in a dose-dependent, and similar, manner. In most cases, the rate-increasing effect of caffeine on FI responding was diminished when combined with a rate-decreasing dose of PIA. However, when 0.01 mg/kg PIA, a dose that had no effect alone, was combined with 3 mg/kg caffeine, the increase in rate exceeded that of caffeine alone. Rate-deceasing effects of PIA were antagonized by caffeine; with larger doses of PIA, larger doses of caffeine were required for antagonism. Thus, while the rate-increasing effects of caffeine can be either enhanced or diminished, when combined with different doses of PIA, the rate-decreasing effects of PIA are clearly antagonized by caffeine in a dose-dependent manner.

    Description: L’area napoletana è una delle zone a più alto rischio vulcanico, per la presenza di tre strutture vulcaniche attive (il Somma-Vesuvio, la caldera dei Campi Flegrei e l’Isola d’Ischia) e per l’intensa urbanizzazione della zona. La concentrazione dei suddetti vulcani attivi in un’area molto urbanizzata rende fondamentale la presenza di un sistema di monitoraggio che registri i fenomeni connessi al processo vulcanico in atto e che dia informazioni utili per modellarne il comportamento. Tra i vari fenomeni che generalmente sono associati ai processi vulcanici, le deformazioni statiche giocano un ruolo importante per lo studio dei parametri delle sorgenti magmatiche e per la loro modellazione. Nell’area vulcanica napoletana è presente una estesa rete GPS (sia permanente che discreta) che negli ultimi 10 anni ha permesso di raccogliere una mole importante di dati e di avere informazioni circa la dinamica in atto. I dati raccolti in tale periodo, a causa dei rapidi sviluppi della tecnologia GPS, della strumentazione, delle metodologie di processamento, presentavano alcune disomogeneità nella qualità, nell’archiviazione e nell’elaborazione. Pertanto è stato necessario un notevole lavoro di verifica, correzione ed omogeneizzazione dal punto di vista qualitativo di tutti i dati disponibili. Successivamente si è potuto procedere al riprocessamento dei dati, utilizzando il software GPS Bernese v. 5.0, secondo i più recenti standard IGS. Questo lavoro ha permesso di creare un database accurato di tutti i dati GPS disponibili per l’intera area vulcanica napoletana e il conseguente miglioramento della qualità dei risultati ha fornito un utile contributo all’interpretazione dei movimenti del suolo avvenuti negli ultimi anni. In particolare, i nuovi dati ottenuti hanno permesso un’accurata descrizione dell’andamento temporale dei modesti fenomeni di sollevamento (mini-uplift) che hanno interessato la caldera flegrea negli ultimi anni.

    Description: This paper is a contribution to the evaluation of ground deformations at Somma-Vesuvius volcano by means GPS measurements from 2001 to 2012. In this study we use a dataset from nine continuous GPS stations of the Neapolitan Volcanoes Continuous GPS network (NeVoCGPS), which covers the Neapolitan volcanic area, and is operated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. The GPS data processing is performed by the Bernese software v. 5.0. The results of the data processing show that the dynamics of the Somma-Vesuvio volcano, between 2001 and 2012, is characterized by a general subsidence, with maximum values on the Gran Cono at BKNO (−11.7 ± 0.65 mm/year) and BKE1 (−4.92 ± 0.36 mm/year) stations. The subsidence decrease from the crater down to the coast and the horizontal displacements are concentrated in Gran Cono area, the youngest part of the volcano. The parameters of the principal strain components indicate that Somma-Vesuvius is affected by a predominant contraction phase, which is concentrated in the areas with the greatest altitudes.

    Description: The Neapolitan volcanic area,located around the ciry of Naples in the Southern patt of the Campanran plain, is one of the most relevant active volcanic areas, chanctenzed by a hrgh risk, due to the dense urbantzatton and to presence of three active volcanoes (Campi Flegrei caldera, Somma-Vesuvio and Ischià Ishnd). Campi Flegrei caldera, placed west of Naples, is a well known example of peculiar ground deforàations (bradyseism), chanctenzed by period of intense uplift, nor necessarily culminating in an eruptive phase (the last eruption occurred in 1538), followed by a subsidence phase. Recently, during the 1970-1972 and 1,982-1984,t he caldera has been affected by two intense episode of intense uplift (sine eruption). In 1985 a subsidence phase started (with some episodic small and fast uplifts superimposed) and terminated at end of 2004. Somma-Vesuvio, at east of Naples, is a quiescent volcano (the last eruption occurred in 1944) and is charactenzed by a low level of ground deformatio.r, .*..p. small and limited subsidence are s, located near craLter area and around the volcanic edifice. Ischia island, at S\ù7 of Naples, has been characterrzed rn the past times by a both explosive and effusive volcanic activity (the last eruption occurred in 1302). Successively the ground deformation activity has been charactenzed by a meaningful subsidence in the S and NW sectors of the island. Ground deformation is usualy ónnected with pressure changes of magma reservoirs or with intrusive events. So, monitoring and analysis of ground deformations are important tools in order to understanding the geometry, dynamics and evolution of thr source. The NeVoCGPS QNeapolitan Volcanic Continuous GPS) network consists of 25 stations (Fig. 1), managed by remote control. The data are automatically downloaded and proceised daily by the Ultra rapid IGS products. \ù7hen the IGS final orbits and Earth rotation parameters (trRPt become avallable the data are reprocessed and weekly solutionr àr. obtained, also. The data processing is performed by the Bernese Processing Engine (BPE) of the Bernese GPS software v. 5.0 in double difference mode. The èlevaiion cut-off is set at 1'5o and the IGS absolute phase centre variations (APCVO for the satellite and receiver antennas are applied. To minimize the tectonic movements contribution, the GPS position time series are estimated relative to the stable station ENAV located outside the volcanTc area. The NeVoCGPS datahave been always very useful for ground deformadon study, pointing out also small intensity phenome na, that usually are not discriminated by discontinuous measures.

    Description: L’Osservatorio Vesuviano, Sezione di Napoli dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, gestisce il sistema di monitoraggio per la sorveglianza delle aree vulcaniche del Somma Vesuvio, dei Campi Flegrei e dell’isola d’Ischia. Tale sistema comprende reti geofisiche e geochimiche: quelle geofisiche controllano l’attività sismica, le deformazioni del suolo e le variazioni del campo gravimetrico, mentre quelle geochimiche misurano la composizione chimica dei gas emessi dalle fumarole e di quelli disciolti nelle acque di falda. Per quanto concerne l’isola d’Ischia, il controllo delle deformazioni del suolo viene effettuato utilizzando tecniche classiche (livellazioni di precisione, gravimetria, mareometria) e metodi satellitari (GPS, SAR). In particolare, sull’isola sono state installate una rete di livellazione, una rete gravimetrica, un mareografo e una rete GPS. Nel corso del primo semestre del 2010, sull’isola d’Ischia sono state effettuate una campagna gravimetrica, una di livellazione ed una di misure GPS. Oggetto di questo rapporto è la descrizione dell’attività svolta durante la campagna di misure GPS realizzata dal 28 maggio (DoY 148) al 11 giugno (DoY 162) 2010.

    Description: The Neapolitan volcanic area is located in the southern part of the Campanian plain and includes three active volcanoes (Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei Caldera and Ischia Island). This area shows different dynamical behaviours. Campi Flegrei caldera represents one well known and peculiar example of ground deformations (bradyseism), with periods of intense uplift during the 1969-72 and 1982-84, followed by subsidence phase with some episodic mini-uplifts superimposed. Contrary, Vesuvius is a substantially stable volcano, with small and localized subsidence mainly in the crater zone. Ischia Island has been characterized by subsidence in the S and NW sectors of the island. The presence of these three volcanoes in a dense populated area, makes ground deformation detection a crucial point in the risk mitigation. Ground deformation is an important volcanic precursor, because linked to magma overpressure and migration, thus, continuous monitoring and modelling is one of the main instruments to attempt for a short time forecast of eruptive activity. Since several years, the INGV – Osservatorio Vesuviano installed a permanent GPS network (NeVoCGPS), constituted of 27 stations, in the Neapolitan volcanic area with a configuration that guarantees a continuous and fast 3D information about the dynamics of the area. All the GPS stations are managed by remote control, the data are daily downloaded automatically. After an automatic quality control procedure, the data processing is performed by the Bernese Processing Engine (BPE) of the Bernese GPS software v. 5.0. In this work, the entire chain of data acquisition and processing is described and some results obtained in last years are presented.

    Description: Intense localized Langmuir waves in the solar wind are often associated with type III solar radio bursts. Wave packets with a Gaussian fall-off of electric field with distance are shown to be consistent with strong turbulence simulations. The collapse threshold for these Gaussian wave packets is calculated analytically and shown to be consistent with previous estimates and simulations. We then assess whether intense Langmuir events detected by the SWAVES instrument on the twin STEREO spacecraft during type III bursts are consistent with known conditions for wave packet collapse. Eight different type III events are selected and a total of 167 wave packets analyzed. An approximate analysis of the observed spatial scales and electric fields shows that none of the wave packets are consistent with collapse. The electric field structures predicted for collapsing wave packets, based on the nucleation mechanism and extensive three-dimensional electrostatic and electromagnetic Zakharov simulations, are also fitted to the observed data: about a third of the packets are well fitted by a potential with a Gaussian radial function. Where good fits can be found, the wave packets do not meet the requirements for collapse. Good eigenmode fits are found for wave packets with waveforms well fitted by the structural form of collapsing wave packets. This is because the electric field envelopes of collapsing wave packets and trapped Langmuir eigenmodes are both Hermite-Gauss functions. This rules out the possibility of wave packet collapse and strong turbulence being important processes in type III source regions.

    Description: The relativistic electrons in the inner radiation belt have received little attention in the past due to sparse measurements and unforgiving contamination from the inner belt protons. The high quality measurements of the Magnetic Electron Ion Spectrometer (MagEIS) instrument onboard Van Allen Probes provides a great opportunity to investigate the dynamics of relativistic electrons in the low L region. In this letter, we report the newly unveiled pitch angle distribution (PAD) of the energetic electrons with minima at 90° near the magnetic equator in the inner belt and slot region. Such a PAD is persistently present throughout the inner belt and appears in the slot region during storms. One hypothesis for 90°-minimum PADs is that off-90° electrons are preferentially heated by chorus waves just outside the plasmapause (which can be at very low L during storms) and/or fast magnetosonic waves which exist both inside and outside the plasmasphere.
