    Notes: The mean annual rainfall in southern Africa is found to explain over half of the observed variance in the stable nitrogen (N) isotopic signatures of C3 vegetation in southern Africa (r2=0.54, P〈0.01). The inverse relationship between the stable N isotopic signatures of foliar samples from C3 vegetation and long-term southern African rainfall is found on a scale larger than previously observed. A modest relationship is found between stable carbon (C) isotopic signatures of C3 vegetation and rainfall across the region (r2=0.20, P〈0.01). No such relationship is found between stable C and N isotopic signatures of C4 vegetation and rainfall. The explanation of the relationship between 15N in C3 vegetation and the mean annual rainfall presented here is that nutrient availability varies inversely with water availability. This suggests that water-limited systems in southern Africa are more open in terms of nutrient cycling and therefore the resulting natural abundance of foliar 15N in these systems is enriched. The use of this relationship may be of value to those researchers modeling both the dynamics of vegetation and biogeochemistry across this region. The use of the isotopic enrichment in C3 vegetation as a function of rainfall may provide an insight into nutrient cycling across the semi-arid and arid regions of southern Africa. This finding has implications for the study of global change, especially as it relates to vegetation responses to changing regional rainfall regimes over time.

    Notes: Over 50 scientists from eight different countries coordinated research efforts in the Kalahari sand mass in Zambia and Botswana during the 2000 wet season as a part of the Southern African Regional Science Initiative – Kalahari Transect Wet Season Campaign (S2K-KT Wet Season Campaign). The work focused on change in ecological processes along the International Geosphere–Biosphere Programme-designated Kalahari Transect (KT). Topics included ecosystem structure, function, biogeochemistry, and modeling at the patch, landscape and regional scale. The KT of southern and central Africa follows a sharp precipitation gradient within an otherwise climatically and geographically similar region that contains a widely distributed, physically uniform soil and relatively little variation in elevation. This paper outlines the focus of the SAFARI 2000 research campaign as it relates to this study area and provides references to archived data sets generated during the study. It also describes vegetation patterns, climate, and 2000 wet season meteorological conditions for the region.

    Notes: Abstract  During a research cruise in July 1997 in the Gulf of Mexico we discovered a gas hydrate approximately 1 m thick and over 2 m in diameter which had recently breached the sea floor at a depth of 540 m. The hydrate surface visible from the submarine was considerably greater than that of any other reported hydrate. Two distinct color bands of hydrate were present in the same mound, and the entire exposed surface of the hydrate was infested (2500 individuals/m2) with 2 to 4 cm-long worms, since described as a new species, Hesiocaeca methanicola, in the polychaete family Hesionidae (Desbruyères and Toulmond 1998). H. methanicola tissue stable isotope values are consistent with a chemoautotrophic food source. No evidence of chemoautotrophic symbionts was detected, but geochemical data support the presence of abundant free living bacteria on the hydrate. The activities of the polychaetes, grazing on the hydrate bacteria and supplying oxygen to their habitats, appears to contribute to the dissolution of hydrates in surface sediments.

    Notes: Abstract  Nitrogen isotope measurements may provide insights into changing interactions among plants, mycorrhizal fungi, and soil processes across environmental gradients. Here, we report changes in δ15N signatures due to shifts in species composition and nitrogen (N) dynamics. These changes were assessed by measuring fine root biomass, net N mineralization, and N concentrations and δ15N of foliage, fine roots, soil, and mineral N across six sites representing different post-deglaciation ages at Glacier Bay, Alaska. Foliar δ15N varied widely, between 0 and –2‰ for nitrogen-fixing species, between 0 and –7‰ for deciduous non-fixing species, and between 0 and –11‰ for coniferous species. Relatively constant δ15N values for ammonium and generally low levels of soil nitrate suggested that differences in ammonium or nitrate use were not important influences on plant δ15N differences among species at individual sites. In fact, the largest variation among plant δ15N values were observed at the youngest and oldest sites, where soil nitrate concentrations were low. Low mineral N concentrations and low N mineralization at these sites indicated low N availability. The most plausible mechanism to explain low δ15N values in plant foliage was a large isotopic fractionation during transfer of nitrogen from mycorrhizal fungi to plants. Except for N-fixing plants, the foliar δ15N signatures of individual species were generally lower at sites of low N availability, suggesting either an increased fraction of N obtained from mycorrhizal uptake (f), or a reduced proportion of mycorrhizal N transferred to vegetation (T r). Foliar and fine root nitrogen concentrations were also lower at these sites. Foliar N concentrations were significantly correlated with δ15N in foliage of Populus, Salix, Picea, and Tsuga heterophylla, and also in fine roots. The correlation between δ15N and N concentration may reflect strong underlying relationships among N availability, the relative allocation of carbon to mycorrhizal fungi, and shifts in either f or T r.

    Notes: Abstract  Recent investigations into the nutrient cycling of coastal ecosystems have suggested that migratory or anadromous fish could be important vectors of marine nutrients. Anadromous fish have assimilated marine nutrients that would contribute to the nutrient budgets of freshwater systems by excretion, gamete release, or the decay of post-reproductive carcasses. However, the extent to which freshwater predators utilize marine material is not well understood. In systems where anadromous fish temporarily constitute a major portion of the fish community, they may contribute substantially to the diet of piscivorous fish and other predators. Here we show the contribution of anadromous blueback herring, shad, and alewife (Alosa) to diets of large, non-indigenous piscivorous catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) using δ34S and δ13C. The spawning anadromous Alosa, captured in tidal freshwater, had enriched δ34S and δ13C values compared to resident, native freshwater species. As a result of consuming the anadromous Alosa, the I. furcatus isotope signature shifted towards the marine signal. The isotope analysis revealed that anadromous fish contribute substantially to the diet of most captured I. furcatus. The percentage of anadromous Alosa carbon and sulfur that was incorporated into I. furcatus (≥38 cm total length) ranged from 0 to 84% and 10 to 69%, and had means (±SD) of 42 (±24) and 43 (±16)%, respectively. Although the δ15N signal of marine-derived biomass is enriched by approximately 3‰ relative to terrestrial or freshwater biomass, it was not as useful as δ34S and δ13C for nutrient source owing to trophic fractionation. This study demonstrates that anadromous fish may be a significant source of nutrients to tidal freshwater apex predators.
