    Description: Background Radiological characteristics may reflect the biological features of brain tumors and may be associated with genetic alterations that occur in tumorigenesis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between radiological features and IDH1 status as well as their predictive value for survival of glioblastoma patients. Methods The clinical information and MR images of 280 patients with histologically confirmed glioblastoma were retrospectively reviewed. The radiological characteristics of tumors were examined on MR images, and the IDH1 status was determined using DNA sequencing for all cases. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model were used to identify prognostic factors for progression-free and overall survival. Results The IDH1 mutation was associated with longer progression-free survival ( P = .022; hazard ratio, 0.602) and overall survival ( P = .018; hazard ratio, 0.554). In patients with the IDH1 mutation, tumor contrast enhancement and peritumoral edema indicated worse progression-free survival ( P = .015 and P = .024, respectively) and worse overall survival ( P = .024 and P = .032, respectively). For tumors with contrast enhancement , multifocal contrast enhancement of the tumor lesion was associated with poor progression-free survival ( P = .002) and poor overall survival ( P = .010) in patients with wild-type IDH1 tumors. Conclusions Combining the radiological features and IDH1 status of a tumor allows more accurate prediction of survival outcomes in glioblastoma patients. The complementary roles of genetic changes and radiological features of tumors should be considered in future studies.

    Description: Viral infectivity factor (Vif) is required for lentivirus fitness and pathogenicity, except in equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV). Vif enhances viral infectivity by a Cullin5-Elongin B/C E3 complex to inactivate the host restriction factor APOBEC3. Core-binding factor subunit beta (CBF-β) is a cell factor that was recently shown to be important for the primate lentiviral Vif function. Non-primate lentiviral Vif also degrades APOBEC3 through the proteasome pathway. However, it is unclear whether CBF-β is required for the non-primate lentiviral Vif function. In this study, we demonstrated that the Vifs of non-primate lentiviruses, including feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV), caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV), and maedi-visna virus (MVV), do not interact with CBF-β. In addition, CBF-β did not promote the stability of FIV, BIV, CAEV, and MVV Vifs. Furthermore, CBF-β silencing or overexpression did not affect non-primate lentiviral Vif-mediated APOBEC3 degradation. Our results suggest that non-primate lentiviral Vif induces APOBEC3 degradation through a different mechanism than primate lentiviral Vif. IMPORTANCE The APOBEC3 protein family members are host restriction factors that block retrovirus replication. Vif, an accessory protein of lentivirus, degrades APOBEC3 to rescue viral infectivity by forming Cullin5-Elongin B/C-based E3 complex. CBF-β was proved to be a novel regulator of primate lentiviral Vif function. In this study, we found that CBF-β knockdown or overexpression did not affect FIV Vif's function, which induced polyubiquitination and degradation of APOBEC3 by recruiting the E3 complex in a manner similar to that of HIV-1 Vif. We also showed that other non-primate lentiviral Vifs did not require CBF-β to degrade APOBEC3. CBF-β did not interact with non-primate lentiviral Vifs or promote their stability. These results suggest that a different mechanism exists for the Vif-APOBEC interaction and that non-primates are not suitable animal models for exploring pharmacological interventions that disrupt Vif–CBF-β interaction.

    Notes: Experimental measurements are made for the steady-state frequency response of a supported thermocouple wire. In particular, the effects of axial heat conduction are demonstrated for both a supported one material wire (type K) and a two material wire (type T) with unequal material properties across the junction. The data for the amplitude ratio and phase angle are correlated to within 10% with the theoretical predictions of Fralick and Forney (1992) for a laser-heated junction with no bead. This is accomplished by choosing a natural frequency ωn for the wire data to correlate the first-order response at large gas temperature frequencies. Moreover, it is found that a large bead size (roughly twice the wire diameter) will increase the amplitude ratio at low frequencies and distort the phase angle. In the latter case, it is necessary to increase the thermocouple wire length by 20% in the theory to correlate the data when the junctions have beads (silver soldered).

    Notes: The distribution and suspension of dust particles under the action of electrostatic, gravitational, ion-drag and neutral collision forces are investigated near the boundary of a dusty plasma. It is shown that the competition among the forces results in spatial oscillations (multi-layer) of the particle distribution. For sub-micron grains the ion-drag has a significant effect on the grain dynamics while for micrometer sized grains the gravity quickly dominates over other forces. The effect of the neutral gas flux is to enhance or diminish that of the gravity while the effect of the neutral viscosity is to shift the profile toward the wall. Under the force balance, the particles are suspended in a narrow region with sharp boundaries within the sheath. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It is shown that a dusty plasma can admit dust-acoustic solitons on a very slow time scale involving the motion of dust grains, whose charge is self-consistently determined by local electron and ion currents. The solitons exist for a range of velocities and the peak amplitude increases almost linearly with the velocity. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The propagation of a dust-ion-acoustic wave (DIAW) wave down the steep density gradient in an inhomogeneous diffusive dusty plasma is experimentally studied. It is observed that the presence of the dust enhances the plasma inhomogeneity. The phase velocity of the DIAW increases rapidly with distance and becomes supersonic. The interplay between the effects of the density nonuniformity and collisional damping results in the continuous transition of the relative amplitude of the DIAW from damping to growth. The experimental data are in agreement with theoretical prediction and confirm the importance of density-dependent ion–dust collisions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The ambipolar diffusion of plasma particles in a column of inhomogeneous plasma containing dust grains is investigated analytically as well as numerically. The grains act as charge sinks and behave like an immobile but charge-varying negative background. They can lead to significant depletion of the electron density and decrease the diffusion scale length. The theoretically obtained election density distribution agrees well with that from experiment. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A compact dispersion relation for parametric instabilities of an electromagnetic pump wave is derived, taking into account the dust-particle dynamics and the dust-grain charge fluctuations caused by wave motions in unmagnetized dusty plasmas. Specific results for quasistationary modulational and filamentation instabilities are presented. It is found that thresholds of these instabilities are reduced in the presence of quasistationary plasma slow response involving charged dust grains. The present investigation should be useful in understanding the nonlinear propagation of intense electromagnetic waves through dusty space and laboratory plasmas. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Crack-free antiferroelectric PbZrO3(PZ) thin films were prepared by a two-step annealing technique via a modified sol-gel process. Although x-ray diffraction results showed that single phase of perovskite PbZrO3 was obtained in the thin films annealed at 550, 700, and 550 °C/700 °C, double P-E hysteresis loop indicating phase transformation from antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase was only observed for the two-step annealed PZ thin film at room temperature, with a forward switching field (EAFE-FE) of 151 kV/cm, a backward switching field (EFE-AFE) of about 77 kV/cm, and saturated polarization of 54 μC/cm2. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZ film annealed at 700 °C are 260 and 0.04 at 1 kHz, respectively. The prevention of the PZ film from being cracking by the two-step annealing procedure is believed to be a result of the more stable property of the film caused by the 550 °C pre-annealing. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
