Notes: Summary Homology with the mouse bare patches mutant suggests that the gene for the X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata / ichthyosis / cataract / short stature syndrome (Happle syndrome) is located in the human Xq28 region. To test this hypothesis, we performed a linkage study in three families comprising a total of 12 informative meioses. Multiple recombinations appear to exclude the Xq28 region as the site of the gene. Surprisingly, multiple crossovers were also found with 26 other markers spread along the rest of the X chromosome. Two-point linkage analysis and analysis of recombination chromosomes seem to exclude the gene from the entire X chromosome. Three different mechanisms are discussed that could explain the apparent exclusion of an X-linked gene from the X chromosome by linkage analysis: (a) different mutations on the X chromosome disturbing X inactivation, (b) metabolic interference, i.e. allele incompatibility of an X-linked gene, and (c) an unstable pre-mutation that can become silent in males. We favour the last explanation, as it would account for the unexpected sex ratio (M∶F) of 1.2∶1 among surviving siblings, and for the striking clinical variability of the phenotype, including stepwise increases in disease expression in successive generations.

Description: An improved tectonic database for the South Atlantic has been compiled by combining magnetic anomaly, Geosat altimetry and onshore geologic data. We used this database to obtain a revised plate-kinematic model. Starting with a new fit-reconstruction for the continents around the South Atlantic, we present a high-resolution isochron map from Chron M4 to present. Fit reconstructions of South America and Africa that require rigid continental plates result in substantial misfits either in the southern South Atlantic or in the equatorial Atlantic. To achieve a fit without gaps, we assume a combination of complex rift and strike-slip movements: (1) along the South American Parana-Chacos Basin deformation zone (2) within marginal basins in South America (Salado, Colorado Basin) and (3) along the Benue Trough/Niger Rift system in Africa. These faults are presumed to have been active before or during the breakup of the continents. Our model describes a successive “unzipping” of rift zones starting in the southern South Atlantic. Between 150 Ma (Tithonian) and approximately 130 Ma (Hauterivian), rifting propagated to 38 °S, causing tectonic movements within the Colorado and Salado basins. Subsequently, between 130 Ma and Chron M4 (126.5 Ma), the tip of the South Atlantic rift moved to 28 °S, resulting in intracontinental deformation along the Parana-Chacos Basin deformation zone. Between Chron M4 and Chron MO (118.7 Ma) rifting propagated into the Benue Trough and Niger Rift, inducing rift and strike-slip motion. After Chron MO, the equatorial Atlantic began to open, while rifting and strike-slip motion still occurred in the Benue Trough and Niger Rift. Since Chron 34 (84 Ma), the opening of the South Atlantic is characterized by simple divergence of two rigid continental plates.

Description: Although previous findings support an origin of the Shatsky Rise igneous plateau (Northwest Pacific) through interaction of a mantle plume with a mid-ocean ridge triple junction, the evidence for the involvement of a mantle plume is equivocal. The identification of an intraplate hotspot track emanating from the plateau could solve this controversy. Here we present major and trace element geochemical data from two different bathymetric features that emanate from the youngest end of Shatsky Rise: Papanin Ridge and the Ojin Rise Seamount province. Combining our results with plate tectonic reconstructions, we conclude that Papanin Ridge represents a hotspot track formed by plume-ridge interaction. Whereas the southwestern part was formed along the path of the retreating Pacific-Farallon-Izanagi triple junction, the northeastern part was built by preferential drainage into its Pacific-Farallon branch. In contrast, the Ojin Rise Seamounts formed as a true intraplate hotspot track of the Shatsky plume tail. Our wide-ranging study reveals systematic spatial geochemical variations, consistent with a lithospheric thickness control on magma composition derived from melting a heterogeneous plume source. The recognition of two hotspot tracks and in particular of the Ojin Rise Seamounts as an intraplate hotspot track that is directly linked to Shatsky plateau volcanism both in terms of geochemistry and plate tectonic reconstructions confirms the long-disputed involvement of a mantle plume for the formation of Shatsky Rise.

Description: Ice shelves are important elements of the climate system and sensitive to climate changes. The disintegration of large Antarctic ice shelves is the focus of this fracture mechanical analysis. Ice is a complex material which, depending on the context, can be seen as a viscous fluid or as an elastic solid. A fracture event usually occurs on a rather short time scale, thus the elastic response is important and linear elastic fracture mechanics can be used. The investigation of the stress intensity factor as a measure of crack tip loading is based on a 2-dimensional analysis of a single crack with a mode-I type load and additional body loads. This investigation is performed using configurational forces. Depth dependent density and temperature profiles are considered. The relevant parameters are obtained by literature, remote sensing data analysis and modeling of the ice dynamics. The criticality of wet surface cracks is investigated. Description: Although previous findings support an origin of the Shatsky Rise igneous plateau (Northwest Pacific) through interaction of a mantle plume with a mid‐ocean ridge triple junction, the evidence for the involvement of a mantle plume is equivocal. The identification of an intraplate hotspot track emanating from the plateau could solve this controversy. Here we present major and trace element geochemical data from two different bathymetric features that emanate from the youngest end of Shatsky Rise: Papanin Ridge and the Ojin Rise Seamount province. Combining our results with plate tectonic reconstructions, we conclude that Papanin Ridge represents a hotspot track formed by plume‐ridge interaction. Whereas the southwestern part was formed along the path of the retreating Pacific‐Farallon‐Izanagi triple junction, the northeastern part was built by preferential drainage into its Pacific‐Farallon branch. In contrast, the Ojin Rise Seamounts formed as a true intraplate hotspot track of the Shatsky plume tail. Our wide‐ranging study reveals systematic spatial geochemical variations, consistent with a lithospheric thickness control on magma composition derived from melting a heterogeneous plume source. The recognition of two hotspot tracks and in particular of the Ojin Rise Seamounts as an intraplate hotspot track that is directly linked to Shatsky plateau volcanism both in terms of geochemistry and plate tectonic reconstructions confirms the long‐disputed involvement of a mantle plume for the formation of Shatsky Rise.
Description: Plain Language Summary: The origin of Shatsky Rise, a large igneous plateau in the NW Pacific, has long been debated. It could have either formed by shallow mantle melting due to its confirmed creation along a mid‐ocean ridge or with additional contribution of deeper mantle material that upwelled as so‐called mantle plume beneath the spreading ridge (“plume‐ridge interaction”). The identification of an intraplate hotspot track emanating from Shatsky Rise and related to the plateau could answer this question. Here we present major and trace element geochemical data from lava samples dredged from two different structures that arise from the youngest end of the Shatsky Rise plateau: Papanin Ridge and the Ojin Rise Seamount province. By combining our results with plate tectonic reconstructions, we conclude that Papanin Ridge formed, like the main Shatsky Rise, by continued plume‐ridge interaction. In contrast, the Ojin Rise Seamounts formed as a true intraplate hotspot track by the drift of the Pacific Plate over the stationary Shatsky hotspot (plume tail). The recognition of an intraplate hotspot track that is directly linked to the Shatsky plateau volcanism both in terms of geochemistry and plate tectonic reconstructions also confirms the involvement of a mantle plume for the formation of Shatsky Rise.
Description: Key Points: The Ojin Rise Seamounts are identified as intraplate hotspot track of the same mantle plume that formed the Shatsky Rise oceanic plateau. Papanin Ridge formed by plume‐ridge interaction and represents the northeastern continuation of the Shatsky plateau. Linking an intraplate hotspot track to the Shatsky plateau confirms the involvement of a mantle plume for its formation.
